the 'loading' .gif appears at all times with any audio button and disrupts presentation of any background. The audio button has unusually limited options compared to other objects.

Sorry, I don't understand the problem. Audio, video and animated background all work for me. Try using a different browser.

I have no idea what that's supposed to mean. Different devices & operating systems support different browsers and versions. Contact Portfolio technical support and see what they say. They'll probably tell you to remove the animated background GIF as that appears to the culprit.
Portfolio is a closed system. You can't edit the source code.
That animated background GIF is annoying and very distracting. I disabled it in my browser 'cuz I couldn't stand it. The page performs just fine without it.
