Running LR 6.1.1 (standalone, not CC) on Mac OS X 10.8.5. and want to update to a newer version.
Note: I have 6.2 and installed it but downgraded back to 6.1.1.
The downgrade was down via Adobe Chat and letting them take control of my computer.
1. Check Updates from LR 6.1.1... and it says "Up to Date".
Well, it's not and that's why I'm trying to update.
2. Visit this site:
and download various updaters including 6.3, 6.4, 6.5, etc. All fail with the following error message:
Update is not applicable. Error Code: U44M2P28.
3. Remove LR 6 from /Applications folder.
Redownloaded the original install file (LR 6.0) from my Adobe account.
This installs and runs.
4a. Check for updates from LR 6.0 and it shows an update available but it is the most current (6.6.1)-- which does not run on Mac OS X 10.8.5.
Let it update anyway. It fails to launch. No surprise but was interesting to try.
4b. After that "update' I deleted the updated version, restored v6.0 and now it says it is Up to Date.
5. Tried applying the updates from another admin account on the computer. Still fails.
6. Not sure what's left to try.
I was finally able to get it updated to 6.3 -- but not beyond that. It appears that v6.4 and above require Mac OS X 10.9 and I'm still running 10.8.5.
As noted by John Waller, standalone LR gets updates but not new features.
I, again, uninstalled Lightroom 6 from my system. I also did a "Safe Boot", i.e., booting with the Shift key held down since this cleans out many cache files.
Installed 6.0 again. Checked for Updates... from the Help menu and again it showed the 6.6.1 update which I cannot run

I don't know what is provided for Lightroom as far as updates go. My understanding has always been that if you buy the standalone license then you do not get the benefit of updates to the latest versions like you do if you subscribe.

Standalone Lightroom gets all updates just the same as Cloud Lightroom, including new camera support, enhanced features, additional lens profile support and bugfixes.
Standalone Lightroom does not get new features such as Dehaze, Boundary Warp and Guided Upright correction due primarily to arcane US accounting rules. New features are Cloud only, permissible due to the subscription model.

I used the standalone updater for 6.3 and, finally, it worked. It would appear that some cached files "may" have been causing issues but there is no way to be certain.
One oddity: my Photoshop CS6 Standard (not Extended) became a Trial Version of Extended after installing and updating Lightroom. Not sure how that happened but it was easily fixed by re-registering my license.
