I have been working on CFM development for about a month now and really like it. I can't afford Coldfusion for my dedicated server server just yet, but wanted to check if any of you have had success with Railo or OpenBD? I know there has been many discussion on this topic, but I wanted to hear if any of you are actually using it in a production environment? Does it work well for a shared hosting environment? Is is stable and secure for your needs? How is performance of these open source alternatives?
I have posted questions already on Google Railo group, but I wanted to get some advice from Adobe users.
I hope to be able to get Coldfusion someday once I get a few more projects.
Thank you in advance.

Railo is VERY good. Fast reliable, and stable and has a very active community.
Word of caution, neither Railo or OpenBD are 100% CF compatible. They are very close, especially Railo, but there are subtle differences in the more complex functions, So if you are going to be deploying to Railo you should also install it on your development system and develop and test under it as well. This will prevent any surprises. I run both CF9 and Railo on mu development laptop with no problems.

Thank you Lawrence. I love Cartweaver by the way and use it almost daily.
I have tried to setup Railo on my shared server and have had issues. Do you have any idea on how to set it up securely for multiple sites?
Also, is Railo any lighter on memory? I would like to add to my server, but I know CF has crashed it in the past even though I have 3 GB or usable RAM available.

For setting up a solid public server with Railo you'll be better off asking about the details over on the Railo forum. Lots of good knowledge there. I wouldn't suggest trying to serve public sites with CF and Railo from the same server however. It works fine locally for development, but that's not nearly as resource intensive as serving public sites. You could run out of system resources really fast doing that. One environment per server is a good rule to live by here
And thanks! I'm glad you like Cartweaver 🙂
