Apologies for the cross-posting, but..

Hello, all,

Sorry for cross-posting, but I thought this question should be put to both CF and DW forums.

Please see https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2498655 for your thoughts on the Micro$oft acquisition of GitHub.  I'm curious.

V/r,

Are you positive they have aquired github?

When I checked on Thursday, MS was unwilling to pay the asking price, but we all know how fast thing change when it comes to take-overs.

If they have aquired git, then personally I think it would be a good thing for everyone, as they may introduce x usage with the MS team server, and incorporate features from both into the paid for service of git and/or team server.

They've agreed to pay 7.5 billion dollars, about 2 pound fifty pence in UK money l think, according to the most recent updates. Thats going to upset a lot of techs that store their files on github  l would expect. Me l dont give a s.... as l dont use it

Acquisition was reported in today's NY Times. Apparently an all stock purchase.

Yep, all said and done.  And as osgood_ has pointed out, the price was US$7.5 billion (B, not M).

I read a Buzzfeed article about it.  Someone on Twitter posted a poll asking how many would stay and how many would go.  Only 32% indicated they would stay, and over 60% indicated that they would move to another repository.

Sorry.. wasn't Buzzfeed, it was a slashdot article.  I'll provide the URL:

Without radical changes to the github finance model, I cannot see how Microsoft can make the aquisition pay, as Osgood said that $7.5 billion dollars would be equivalent to £7.50p in the real world if it was based on git's real worth.

I also wonder how many of those saying they would leave github are none paying users, (probably most).

I have no numbers, unfortunately.  But regardless, if over half of the users leave, there's less monitization, including potential commercialism, for Micro$oft.

I don't think MS is too worried about monitization.   New US tax laws mean big businesses must spend money to save money.    That's why we're seeing more acquisitions lately.

Hopefully the Atom and VS Code teams can come together and the VS Code team can explain to Atom how they successfully leveraged Electron more efficiently in various areas.
