css copy paste problem in Dreamweaver CS4

Guest
Mar 01, 2009 Mar 01, 2009
Having a problem in CS4 when I want to copy and paste things in my stylesheet.
Whenever I do ctrl +c to select a something the whole stylesheet gets selected. And that is not what I want.
Even is I want to copy something from an other css into the css I am working on it won't do the job.

Anyone having the same problem and found a solution?

Forgive me as I'm new to DW CS4, but I may have a solution.  I encountered the css copy problem as well, but I turned off (unchecked) "Enable Related Files" (Edit -> Preferences -> General -> Document Options -> Enable Related Files).  I had to restart Dreamweaver, but this seems to have fixed the bug.

I've never used the "Enable Related Files" feature, so it's not a big deal to me - much less of a big deal than not being able to copy and paste.  At least it seems to be a stable work around to t

I've said this before, but it's worth repeating: I have found that Eclipse is a lot better than Dreamweaver. It has built in parsers that help a lot with development, refactoring tools, etc. It is also FREE.

I haven't tried the following PHP plugin for Eclipise but it might be worth a look:

http://wiki.eclipse.org/PDT/Installation

That said, Eclipse also has a much tougher learning curve than Dreamweaver.

Thanks eliot1785,

I have been using eclipse for many years and I wanted to give Adobe the

benefit of the doubt that they were going to produce a new product worth

using on a day to day basis. I am a very busy person in the ColdFusion

arena with over 13 years experience since Jeremy Allaire pushed out version

3 of CF. I continue to look and pursue new work in this area as well but

this issue with DreamWeaver has created some very annoying delays which I

cannot and will not tolerate to very much.

Sorry, Soap box was there and had to get on it...

Thanks for replying to my post at Adobe Forums, I do appreciate the

feedback..

This is my first report in this topic although I am constantly monitoring it.

Let me say in one word: Every day I work with DW I think I am going to cry or throw away my computer. This bug is so frustrating I can not tell you how I feel.

No matter what I clear, what I do, which mode DW is on...

Trying to copy one line and copies whole paragraph or even worse, trying to paste somewhere and whole paragraph gets erased with pasted text. Sometimes I don't notice immediately...

I have 3 monitor setup but I work on DW only on middle one. The only thing that "fixes" this is to click on the left monitor before copy or paste. EVERY TIME, as this bug is present almost on every copy/paste I do in source. And I am programmer, I do a lot of copy/paste.

I paid so much for this product. The CS3 didn't have this. And now nobody cares. And it is so hard to work this way 😞

I really think I'm gonna cry one dan becuase it is not 1 or 5 times a day this happens to me, it is every minute 😞 And I have many behaviours and bought extensions I can not just abandon DW. But working this way is so bad. Sometimes I think I'm going to puke one day.

If Adobe is listening, which they obviously are not. HELP UP.

I was official betatester for Macromedia products inc. Dreamweaver and Fireworks. In those days, this product would not have been released, not with me on a betatester team. I fought for such bugs.

I am sorry Adobe swallowed Macromedia, they at least listened.

Yours

Jerry

I feel your pain. I am attempting to send this to Adobe as well. I have

been working with CS4 ever since it has been released and I am really happy

with most of the features but when a bug like this creeps into the lime

light, I want to throw it away alas too much money spent for a bug like

this...

Experiencing the same problem with sporadic selection of source code (CSS, XSL).

I'm using Code screen setup. Also I noticed that it usually starting sporadic selection after I switch input language or use Page Up, Page Down, End, Home keys.

Would hate to buy CS5 just to fix such nasty bugs. This should be fixed for CS4.

I had the same copy/paste/cut issue today. I was not experiencing this issue in any other program. It was happening regardless of whether I was typing a text document or PHP document.

I tried all of the following without success:

- deleted site cache

- deleted WinFileCache...dat

- changed modes to classic and to designer

What worked for me was "#7 Re-create the Dreamweaver User Configuration Folder" in the following Tech Note:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405911.html

After the new configuration folder was automatically created, I then copied any individual folders (such as snippets, extensions, etc) from the old configuration folder into the new one.

Hope that will help someone else.

All these 'fixes' seem to be short term. I use a multi-screen environment and this bug grinds me down, so much in fact that I have given up web development and taken up professional Bejeweled Blitz'ing. Seriously though, this is quite a problem. On the plus side, my score is getting quite good.

I recently installed CS4 on a new Laptop.  I had to bring over all my setting, presets, brushes, swatches, etc., from every product in the adobe suite.  Not big of a deal, I have done it before.

Anyway, I came across this same issue with copying and pasting in Dreamweaver css files which has lead me to this forum.  After reading through and not finding a solution, I went into Preferences, Copy/Paste, and changed setting to Text Only, and look at that, problem solved.

Preferences --> Copy/Paste --> Text Only

That is perfect, except when you want to copy and paste structure as well..

This problem only seems to be there when I am running dual monitors and cs4

is stretched across both in dual screen mode. Click within second monitor

area and then go back to work.

I only use Code View.  I never use Split or Design view.  If I want structure, I code it.

What are you copying and pasting that you need to keep the structure for?

Hi

Similar problem.

CSS files do a select all and page up to the top of the file every time I return to them. Not even attempting to copy and paste -- just moving from an open  htm to a css file.

So I lose my place each time I go from an HTML file to a CSS file. This means I have to de-select and then a search to get back to the spot where I left off. I'm working about 12 hours a day 6 days a week right now and I'm performing this switch from HTML to CSS at least every minute or two -- my math isn't great but I can tell you this adds up to a great deal of frustration.

Working on Windows 7 with CS4. Dual monitor. Design view with code F10nd into the second monitor.

Any help might save what little sanity I have left.

Cheers

Try restarting DW then NOT using F10 (i.e. the Code Inspector). If just restarting doesn't work, reset your Workspace and then refrain from using F10. At first I didn't think this could be the cause, but it turned out that Randy was right (see above), at least in my case. Since resetting my workspace a couple of months ago and avoiding F10 since, the problem has totally gone away.

Julian, Good Morning,,,

I hope that my response to Grn gets into the threads of my original.. Please

look at it and if you do not see it please email me and let me know as I

will send it to you.. No real fix just Band-Aids to the root problem.

Have a great day and I would like for all of us to go after Adobe

collectively so maybe then they will respond.

One can only hope anyway..

Hi Steve

I'm a CF developer from the Allaire days too! Like you I was convinced the problem was related to dual monitors at first, and I dismissed Randy's post about F10. But then one day it happened when I wasn't connected to my second monitor. And my co-worker with the exact same setup (dual montiors, same hardware everything) couldn't reproduce it. But he hadn't changed his workspace and never used F10. I then remembered that the problem started when I started using F10 after learning about it on a blog.

Having reset my workspace and stopped using F10, the problem just disappeared. I can bring it back at will by pressing F10. So can my co-worker.

Could be that it's a larger problem and I'm just in a subset for whom this workaround (it's not a fix - F10 is useful and not being able to use a feature I've paid for is unacceptable) is enough and for you the problem is elsewhere.

I do agree that Adobe, having acknowledged it as a bug should put whatever it takes to fixing it. DW costs too much for them not to (especially here in the UK), and this isn't some obscure edge case.

Cheers
Julian.

Julian,

100% agree with you... It is my belief that this problem crosses many

borders when utilizing the copy/paste aspect in general. There are so many

variable issues reported, were talking in the hundreds at this point with

all of these pointing to one fundamental issue, there is a bug in CS4

DreamWeaver that stems many of these if not all in some small way... What a

pain..

So what kind of sites do you work on? Are you an independent developer?

Write to me off of this forum @ webmaster@cen-net.com

Look forward to hearing from you...

Grn,

I understand your frustration, believe me I do, I use CS4 on windows 7

Ultimate and I have DreamWeaver in Dual Screen mode. What has become

apparent to me, as I have read and received many an email and comments on

this issue, is the fact that no matter what mode you are in with CS4 the

main issue is dealing with dual monitor setups regardless if you move the

code "F10" to second monitor or you just basically work in DreamWeaver at

all on this setup, caching issues surrounding the cursor is the main

problem. I can't tell you the countless hours I have had to click on the

desktop of the second monitor and then go back to the main monitor and then

I can go back to work. Biggest problem is that what I had highlighted and

copied/cut/moved it is reset and also it will highlight either the entire

page, especially with css files, or a main section of code. One huge pain in

the butt for many of us. What I can't figure out is why Adobe has not seen

many of these issues and fixed it.????? One solution was to set in

Preferences / Copy/Paste to Text Only, well that will fix some areas of this

issue, but some of us like to have the structure transferred along with the

code, Duh, why do I need to restructure my code when I already have it

structured...???

Sorry for the long response, but I really don't think that Adobe is dealing

with this and if they are why are they not saying something to the community

of DreamWeaver fans...???? Talk about leaving a sour taste in everyone's

mouth with this one... Oh Boy!!

Steve Myers

PS: I have been using ColdFusion and all of the previous versions of

DreamWeaver since the Allaire and Macromedia days, they always took care of

bugs such as this. So what is wrong with Adobe technical support and the

bug fix department????

Helloooooooooooo...... Adobe,,, are you there?? Do you even Care?????

As I told, all the ideas you have for this bug do not work here. I have 3 monitors, but the DW is only one one (middle o

ne). So this problem is really a major bug not just some picky bug if one has dual monitor setup. I for one use classical setup.

Anyway, as the CS5 trial is out now, did anyone who has this problem tried it yet? It would be most valuable to know if this bug is also in CS5. If it is, I will of course not buy it. This time as am not at all thrilled with the new release as I was with CS4 😞

I will DL and install it, but I can not do it this week, if anybody would care to test sooner please let me know.

When I was a betatester for Macromedia, there were no such bugs in software, but Adobe doesn't care. They are supposed to be some hi end web company, but I have to write this message on IE8 as on my Opera the rich text editor is simply not there and I can not write. Using Opera one can not DL the trial also. I am not saying Opera is the best browser, but it is one of the 5 who I think a company should support. I only need to use IE8 on some really obscure sites, 99.99% of the time I can use my browser. It doesn't feel good I can only partially use Adobe's site. Just my 2 cents, I know it is not connected to this bug, but it does show the Adobe attitude I think.

Hi Grkzorba,

I understand your frustration as I was also a beta tester back in the

macromedia and yes even the Allaire days. I am very disappointed with Adobe

in regards to the fact that I have purchased Master Collection CS4 and all

they will tell me is pay up and we will help you with this?????? Excuse me,

but Macromedia and Allaire would NOT be asking for money from the users for

something that is NOT our fault... Hello Adobe,,,, are you listening yet???

I guess when you are the 5th largest software company in the world this

means very little.

I sign this happily...

I can only agree with the many posters who find it unacceptable that Adobe doesn't come with any answer to solve this problem.

I have just reinstalled windows (XP sp3) and then made a clean install of CS4. Without any modification to any setting whatsoever, without touching the F10 key, and with very basic site settings (only the name of the project, a directory and no remote server) the problem arrived after 5 minutes as I copied a CSS-style.

I have spent hours, no days, maybe weeks if you count up all the time, reading forums, submitting tickets, calling friends who use DW-CS4 and now I have spent a whole morning to make the cleanest install of DW possible. This is a bug that no user can prevent (even though not all users experience it). It is an IMMENSE SHAME that ADOBE doesn't do anything to fix this PROBLEM. How on earth is it possible that this thread/problem is marked as 'SOLVED"?

I have some serious issues with Photoshop as well. Same thing: hundreds of users complain but Adobe does nothing about it. I called my vendor and they advised me to upgrade to CS5. Can you imagine? I've just spent a fortune on CS4, it has never worked well and now I'd have to spend even more?

D*mn Adobe, It is really getting time that you come up with something better than a crappy solution that solves nothing, this is'nt a kindergarten playground, this is the real world where real professionals use your expensive products to earn their living. Do something to earn the trust and confidence  we have put in you when buying CS4.

I feel your pain and all too well understand the frustration. I posted this

If they weren't willing to fix it before, I doubt they will ever fix it now

that CS5 is out. Time to either pay more and hope the problem goes away, or

move to another vendor.
