My version of Dreamweaver - 2000 - is running on an older windows system - Vista. It has been working perfectly. This morning I cannot connect via FTP. This is critical. If this is answered elsewhere on the forum, please forgive me. I cannot locate it. I will be more than grateful for any help!
I decided to try a restore point from before I ran Hitman Pro... BINGO! It worked! No reinstall, no angst! Very relieved. Thank you all for your quick and willing help!

If nothing has changed on your system, I would check with the host if they have changed the protocol/IP Address or similar.

Belatedly I believe there may be a system issue... I ran HItman Pro yesterday - today Dreamweaver will not connect. - many items were removed. It has never affected Dreamweaver before.. but ...? I am going to look into that now. Thank you so much for the quick replies... By the way, using another FTP client, I connect fine.

DW just works with the files on your system, it doesn't actually store them within itself. One of the more common troubleshooting steps is a complete uninstall/reinstall. Your files will be safe, wherever they're stored on your hard drive, as long as you didn't do something silly like put them inside DW within your Windows Program Files folder.
However, if you do reinstall, you won't be able to activate MX2004 with the old serial number you have on hand (if it's the one that came with the program). The Macromedia activation servers have been gone for many years, so you would need to use the steps and serial number from this help page:

You can try downloading and installing the free Filezilla Client to see if you can connect via FTP there. The protocols in Filezilla have been updated over the years, unlike your legacyware version of DW, and it may be able to connect without issue.
If it doesn't connect, there's definitely an issue with your machine, your network or the hosting company. My bet would be the hosting company, there are a few out there that tend to lose FTP credentials during server updates. If that's the case, a quick call to their customer service will have you up and running pretty quickly.
