Does anyone know how to reliably do this? It seems to be pretty haphazard what you can edit and what you can't in Live mode. Sometimes you can select and edit some text, sometimes you can't. Other times, in split screen, you can't edit the live pane but you can go into the code section and change it there. Other times, it's like it's part of a non editable template region even though it is editable.
This wouldn't be an issue but I've been doing more and more sites using Bootstrap 3 and these sites are difficult to work with in Design view, but show up fine in Live mode. But then I can't edit many of the elements properly. I do seem to be able to go into the DOM tab and copy, paste items and I can go into the Bootstrap tab and insert more Bootstrap elements, but if all I want to do is change the price on a client's taxidermy page for example, sometimes yes, sometimes no. I have to switch to design mode, do a search for the appropriate text, and then change it in code view. Then switch back to live view to see if I got it right.
Also, another quirk. If I select some text in the live window and then CTRL-F to search, nothing. If I go down in the code window and select the text and CTRL-F, then the search window shows up.

Which operating system?
I'm not having problems editing content on Win10 but my code is valid. I wonder if your code contains any errors that might preclude DW from correctly rendering & allowing you to edit content.
Use the built in validation tool. Window > Results > Validation.

Windows 10 'anniversary' update.
I'll do a code check on various sites to see what happens. I do have some pages that use a lightbox extension that if it isn't placed inside a CSS container in a specific way, DW shows it in one long continuous line of thumbnails instead of a grid in design mode. In Live mode, it shows OK regardless.
I've seen that if I double click some text in live mode to get inside the CSS container, then if I click to position my cursor, I can edit the text in Live mode. But if I just click some text, usually not.
I don't have any problems editing text or code in Design mode, just Live mode.

I typically select regions inside the Live panel and edit actual code. See screenshot.

That's what I have to do much of the time too - select the element in Live view and then go down to the split screen code view and edit it there, but that's kind of clunky if all you want to do is change a price or something equally simple.

Did some more testing. Other than some complaints about the 'align' attribute being obsolete for div tags, the code is clean.
Here's what happens. If, e.g., I go to the DOM panel, and select say a P item, it will show that block in the Live pane surrounded by a blue boundary and identifying it as P. I can click that P tag on the upper left of this boundary and make style changes, etc. But if I just click the text inside this box, nothing happens. I have to double click something, and then click again to position the cursor where I want to edit.
However, in a Template DWT file, even this doesn't work. The only way I can edit anything when in Live mode, is to go to the Code pane and do it there.
Design view is fine until you get into the more complex systems like Bootstrap or Boilerplate ... you can't see what it actually looks like in Design view but you can't edit it easily in Live view.

Yes. Templates need to be edited in Code or Design View.
Live View has its limitations.

Have you tried selecting them in the DOM panel and drilling down that way? I find that easier a lot of the time. They have really done some work there and allow you to select anything in the chain as well as add I believe. I never add things there but i believe you can. How to use the DOM panel in Dreamweaver

It makes it easier to select the element but I still have to double click to get into the DIV, P Or whatever and then click to select so I can edit. Using the DOM panel does make it a lot easier copying and pasting larger blocks of CSS code.

Hi German,
We regret the inconvenience. DW CC 2017 is not Hi DPI aware hence will behave unusual when screen text size is greater than 100%.
Please try resetting text-size to be 100%, you can follow below link for same. This should resolve the issues you are facing.

Our team is actively investigating Hi-DPI related problems and hopefully will be fixed in future DW releases.
Thanks,
Lalita

The inability to edit live or in design mode in DW 2017 or even 2014 is an abomination. I just chatted with tech support and even they couldn't help me. What kind of thinking went into this "upgrade"?

The Live View Editor is still relatively new and not all functionality that's available in Design View has been added to it. There's a lot more now than when it was first introduced, but it's not there yet.
That's just the way it is with the new Creative Cloud delivery service. We as users may get access to new features right away, but some of them seem to take a couple versions to be truly fleshed out.
The Live View Editor is definitely one of those things.
If you're having issues with something specifically, start a new thread in the forum and someone may be able to help you out. It's best not to latch onto threads that are marked Correct or Assumed Answered, you won't see many replies usually.

Telephone support tells me my file (the default home page) is corrupt but I don't believe it. Design view in 2014 did work with other files on the local copy of my website. I will try to replace the file and see if tech support's theory is correct.

You don't need us to tell you if your code is messed up.
Use the code validation services to check it.
Just because your page renders in a browser does not mean everything is OK. Moreover, the latest version of DW is very sensitive to code errors. Much more than in previous versions.

I am having the same problem. Similar to the way you described it as I have been actually coping and pasting in code view to make changes and believe me I am not a code expert so this is very time consuming. Even at that it does not show in design view and the only way I can see what I have changed is in Live view. Some of the post I have read about rendering (is this the same thing) concerning design view are in 2012. Is this the same thing? I hope that this problem has not existed and not been fixed since 2012. I should of done research but I am trying to stay as current as possible. At first I thought it was my machine or maybe I had an option clicked like display off or something. I am waiting for some advise, please let me know if you found any?
