Off topic, l've recently been digesting the JonL post in the Wappler forum, now removed, he's obviously not a happy bunny anymore with the way things were going.

JonL here.

Just created an account here because someone close to Wappler team asked me politely to reply this.

Wappler is to Dreamweaver what a car to a horse.

Also, I am not a happy bunny indeed. The reason for that is because the great majority of users come from Dreamweaver and they are a bunch of selfish r*tards holding the product back. It's a shame because Wappler team could hit gold if they grew some adult balls.

I only know a handful of ex-DWs that have actually embraced Wappler as what it could be and constantly recicle themselves by learning every single day.

One of them would be Mr Ben Pleysier.

Anyway. Bye. Hope you never step a foot on Wappler community and refuse to switch from php. Go download wordpress.

I understand your frustration. I've said here many times (although this forum is now practically dead which I suppose youd expect given the current status of DW)  web-development over the last 5-10 years has become a free for all shite-show, given the amount of options i.e., server-side, front end, databases, css, programs etc has split the developer community into tiny fragments, mainly arguing with each other as to which is the best stack. Glad Im now mainly out of it and enjoying watching it all unfold, from the sidelines. Good rant though, I enjoyed it!

As for Wappler, while I respect the developers of it and what they have achieved over the last 5 years, its not my thing, never was, so no danger in respect of ever stepping onboard.

I'm glad you understood the point I was trying to convey, I am also glad you enjoyed the rant. I was fed up of ranting in the same manner constantly. I though I would spice it up a bit. Also I was pissed off by the founder telling me I didn't invent the "tab UI/UX pattern" as if that was an excuse not to implement it 😄

In any case I am really glad you understood there was a pinch of sarcasm in all that. And that we are all r*tards in our own very special way 🙂

Glad you enjoy watching this JS framework sh*t-show unfold. Crazy times. Apparently 3 new frameworks were released today. I need to migrate all my apps to all of them before I migrate them tomorrow to another one 😄

Cant say for sure but I think you get editing privileges after a certain amount of posts. Some of my privileges were revoked when I became a bit outspoken at one point, some years back, lol.

.Has Dreamweaver been discontinued?

By @Gabriel320831976qtj

In all but name you could say. Since a few years ago it does not receive any additional updates to what currently is available. It's now only minimally maintained to iron out some bugs and OS updates. It's rapidly fallen behind since active development was down graded.

Don't view it as the go to web development tool just because its from Adobe, which some may do, if they have insufficient background knowledge. You may want to explore different options if youre planning to be in development for the long run.

It's not discontinued, but they announced in an offshoot meeting at Max in 2020 that no new features are being planned. Going forward it's in  Minimum Development Status.

Basically, it's being kept on life support so the current userbase can get their affairs in order.

One day, they'll pull the plug, but Adobe hasn't let anyone know what the deciding factor might be to trigger that announcement.

It's being minimally maintained for the benefit of older users.  No new features have been added since Fall of 2020 (ver 21.x) except security & compatibility updates.

My bad.  I thought it was still in active development.  If someone could come up with a replacement for Photoshop I could get off this train.

A few years back, the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) had gotten to point where it was getting very close to Phoptoshop's abilities and it was free. I'm not sure what kind of development there's been over the last 7ish years, but if you were only using PS for basic editing, it might be worth a look.

If, as stated, the nails are firmly hammered down on Dreaweaver's coffin lid, what app does Adobe's own staff use?

Dreamweaver's demise is one of the most sad SW deaths I've witnessed. It seems anything Adobe acquires, save InDesign, they eventually kill off.
But what bothers me the most, about this particular application, it doesn't appear they're offering a product to transition to. Is a decent IDE that hard to make?

Think about it  - a company the size of Adobe aren't interested in a small piece of the pie they want the whole lot, at least the majority.  It's not financially worth the effort to maintain a presence in the sector that was once dominated by Dreamweaver. The landscape has changed over the years, we have a myriad of optional automated web development programs that weren't around back then. The pieces of the pie are getting smaller and smaller and thats OK if youre a smallish development company. VS code an offering from Microsoft and said to currently be the most popular editor used is FREE. Adobe tried to compete with their free offering Brackets which was shaping up to be a good editor in my opinion but for some reason discontinued its development. I think its since been open sourced as a community project but l have no idea how that is going now it's not supported by a big player. There was discussion about future development.

And that is reason why I cancelled subscription and start using free software, also, Brackets was never a good editor.

I suppose that depends on ones expectations. It needed ongoing work, that's for sure. l personally found it to be a good 'code' editor. If you rely on a visual interface, similar to that of Dreamweaver, then obviously it wasn't going to be a suitable fit.

========

1. See Adobe Experience Manager.  (DAM)

2. See Adobe Portfolio or Adobe Express.

Adobe lost interest in stand alone, desktop web authoring software.  The trend now is online site or page builders from browser-based tools.

3. Dreamweaver is not an IDE.   An integrated development environment (IDE) is stand-alone desktop software that combines program editing, building, testing, and packaging from one application.  See PHPStorm, EclipseIDECodeLobsterIDE or VS Code.

Perhaps, Wappler should be included in the list of IDE's.

"Wappler is an integrated development environment (IDE) designed for creating web apps and websites efficiently. What makes it particularly convenient is that you don’t need to install and configure separate local servers to run your dynamic Wappler web applications or sites. Instead, you can leverage the integrated NodeJS server within Wappler, combined with a SQLite database, to swiftly set up a development environment in just a matter of minutes. This streamlined approach allows you to focus on building and designing your projects without the hassle of managing external server setups."
