How to edit site in DW21 when I don't have the .ste file it asks for importing?

I have seen a similar post from October but it's locked which is why I'm posting a new one on a similar topic.

My hobby sales site was orginally created in DW CS6 in Bootstrap and I last edited it in 2018. Since then I've replaced my PC and no longer have CS, but I do have the whole CC suite including DW 21.2. But it's like a whole new creature to deal with and I can't even get started with a small edit because it's asking for the .ste file which I can't create as I no longer have the old version of DW to export from.

Is anyone able to step me through what I need to do to import and re-upload my site files? They currently exist on my web server and also on my hard drive. But I can't figure out how to connect to my webserver without creating a site. Aaargh.

Update: I have connected the local folder and FTP account so I can see the content but there is no way to edit in Design view or code view. What is the trick to getting the site editable please?

HTML code is still HTML code.

  • Did you define your local site folder?
  • Do your site assets and files all reside on your primary hard drive?
  • Are you opening an HTML file and it is error-free code, denoted by a green checkmark in a circle?
  • Are you in Code | Live or Design view in the document toolbar?
To toggle between Live & Design view, use Ctrl + Shift F11.  From Live view, double-click to edit. A gold box will appear around the element.  See screenshot.

Thanks for your reply.

I have got a bit further along and made the most important edits. I'm going to have to spend a bit longer tidying up the site structure as things are not updating as they should when I save the template file.

Validate code in Template (.dwt) files and child pages.  Fix reported errors.

https://validator.w3.org/

Templates must reside in the local site folder within the TEMPLATES folder.  Otherwise, they don't work.  No other files should be in TEMPLATES though.  Only the .dwt files.

It's strange because the pages were being updated when I updated the template, but Dreamweaver wasn't putting them up to the server. I've now done it manually with FileZilla.
