Using DW CS6, I was able to get all the files from the server but none of the changes I make will "take." I sync newer files to server and I have tried manually putting files but nothing changes when I go to the site in a browser.
When I make changes to the template file .dwt it does not give me the warning it used to give me and it is not making the changes to any of the pages that the template was built for.
Thank you for your help.

Try upgrading from a 10 year old product to something that will jell with current operating systems. DW CC21 would be a great start.

I no longer build or work on websites so buying the newest product and learning how to use it does not make sense. I built this site for my sister in law years ago and she asked me to update some text and an address. I won't have to touch the site again for years.

In that case you could try using Filezilla to upload the files. Filezilla is free of charge and is a real FTP client when compared to Dreamweaver.

Are you uploading files to the remote server's ROOT directory?
It varies by hosting plan. See screenshot.
Also refresh your browser's cache memory (F5 or Ctrl+R).
BTW, I concur with @BenPleysier about using outdated web authoring software. There are free tools you can use instead.

Nancy Thank you. I was able to edit all the text except for the address in the "footer" of the template. The template does not seem to be updating all the pages the way a "template" is supposed to. Any help is appreciated.

How many Templates?
Are child pages connected to the right Template files?
Are Template files properly formatted and free of code errors?

Thank you Nancy. I will look at the validator. I believe the template is formatted properly and connected because every page is showing the same headder and footer, yet none are updating. I retrieved all the files from the existing site so they "should" all be he same. For somereason when I update the template it does not update the pages and I do not get the warning message that they are about to be updated.

I don't remember how CS6 works as I haven't looked at it in 10 years.
In DW CC, go to Tools > Templates > Update Pages.

your child pages must be corrupted, it happens sometimes.
so reapply the template to them
does this help ?
