Licensing for this product has stopped working

I know this is an old problem affecting an old version of Dreamweaver but it has just hit me and any solution would be extremely welcome.

I have been using the Mac version of Dreamweaver CS4 v.10 for some years on several web projects. I have recently had to upgrade my Mac OS from Sierra 10.12.5 to Mojave 10.14.4. I now find that on trying to launch DW I get an alert titled “Licensing for this product has stopped working” with an error number 150: 30. After dismissing the alert the program continues to load and will display the site briefly before it exits.

I have found a procedure for correcting the licensing problem on Adobe help (https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/error-licensing-stopped-mac-os.html) but the Flexnet Publisher folder which should be deleted does not exist in my Preferences folder.

Is there any fix for this? I recognise that in the longer term I will have to find a permanent solution as DW CS4 will cease to run under OS X because of not being a 64 bit application, but my problem is immediate and was unexpected.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm reluctant to pay £240 a year for a new version of DW which I would only use for this one site and which is much more featureful and complex than I really want. Not sure where to go from here.

It all depends on what you need and what your skills are.

See these links:

Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems

Installing Creative Suite on macOS 10.12 (Sierra)

You could try uninstalling CS4, wiping all traces of it off your system with the CS Cleaner Tools followed by a re-installation with the Terminal workaround for newer Macs.  But I still can't guarantee success because CS4 is not compatible with  Mojave.

If you need to keep using legacy software, get an older OS on a virtual machine or 2nd computer.

In the meantime, you can download Adobe Brackets,  a free code editor.

Brackets - A modern, open source code editor that understands web design.

Thanks for the advice.

Trying a Sierra installation on a virtual machine seemed attractive as I use VMWare Fusion to run Windows. Unfortunately I couldn't find an instal file of Sierra to download so tried instead with High Sierra 10.13.6 which is available from the App Store. That worked ok as a virtual machine but had the same problem when I ran DreamWeaver as did Mojave.

Did you wipe everything from CS4 off your system?

Some progress. I've now got a virtual setup under Fusion of El Capitan and installed a new copy of DW CS4 on that 'disk'. It runs!

Next problem is how I can load the site which is sitting on my 'real' HD. I understand that site definitions are held in .ste files but I can't find anything with that extension and don't recall ever having run an export or backup of definitions from CS4. Of course DW will load individual pages correctly but the thought of having to recreate the whole site page by page is appalling!

Unless you manually exported the .ste files, they won't exist.

You can create new, blank sites in DW and simply point their root folders to your existing content. You'll need to then re-enter your FTP information.

Success! Thanks.

Running an old OS and old DW software is a bit of a kludge but it has got me out of a tricky situation. It's not really a solution for the long term though I'm reluctant to pay £240 a year for a new version of DW which I would only use for this one site and which is much more featureful and complex than I really want. Not sure where to go from here.

Anyway, Thanks again.

Thanks.

Both my needs and skills are modest! Also I don't want to have to spend ages learning new software and even more ages rejigging a site to fit. I guess in the end I'll probably decide to go with Dreamweaver CC, but there's no rush now.
