MySQL connection using DW 8

I'm having a real real problem trying to connect to the mySQL datatbase on my machine via DW 8. I'm running mySQL 4.0.2.0 and PHP 4.4.1 on MAC OS 10.4. I have created the site in the Sites folder of my user account. I am successfully running phpMyAdmin 2.8.1 from that same directory. When I try to make the connection to the database I get the following error.

- - - Can't connect to local server through socket 'var/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) - - -

My site is configured to access 'local/network".

Obviously I have something configured wrong. I have spent my Memorial Day weekend trying to resolve this and here I am still trying to no avail. I have even reinstalled DW 8. If anyone knows what is up I am all ears.

I wonder if you have a MAC v Windows port/socket issue.

Thanks I going to try that but I also think I may have messed up some directories with mySOL configs. I can't find them. If that happened I may have to reinstall this baby and start again.
