News and announcements widget

I would like to build/insert a section on my site that allows me to create news entries? A listing of news articles, authored by me, not hosted anywhere else. It would contain authoring date, Title and possible the first sentence of the article.

What server-side scripting and database do you have available?  If you have PHP/mySQL have you considered just a simple Wordpress installation for your news?  Or sometimes people use forums like these and create an announcements forum and pull from that.
