Thought I was going mad. Has anyone else had there hosting service revert one of their websites to a previous version WITHOUT informing them??
Could not work out what was going on because parts on the live site resembled nothing like what was on the locally built site which was the last version updated. Even the 'include' folder on the remote server was missing. Of course I updated a page on the local server and uploaded it but huge parts of the design/content were missing UNTIL I eventually realised there was no include folder on the remote server. On closer inspection I then noticed some of the text was different, css styles different, obviously which had been updated at a later stage. I have zero idea what went on without my knowledge, whether there was a hack or meltdown that the host was too embarressed to inform me of but this is unacceptable, right?
Any one else have a similar hosting horror story?

don't you manage your own servers?

No. I don't particularly want that added responsibilty as well. I stick to doing what I do best.

since a while there is a service called 'infogerence' or 'managed services'... I don't know the name in english, so I tried to translate it as best as I could...
so this service is attached to your own dedicated servers. there is the specialised the team that handle all the operating system, the patch update, the security aspect, the disk managment...
and you as owner you handle all the services management, the different web services, the version of the application that you need, the dns, the different server and application installed, the roll back, the database and so on...
that way you as user, just have to handle your aspect of the server and you delegate only the pure server hardware/os management

Im really not sure where the money is in managing my own servers and the problems and issues that could potentially arise just to make a few extra dollars a year. It isnt really worth it in my situation. I pay hosting companies to host the files, not lose them and then restore the files using a backup which is a few months old. Just be honest, contact me and l can restore the correct files in minutes.

Im sure its a good idea for others BUT personally not for me as I said I prefer to channel my engery and time into what makes me good at what I do and I dont see myself as a server manager.

I think in the U/K most independant web developers use an hosting service, as opposed to managing hosting themselves.
Os.
They should have contacted the owner of the site, so any notification may have gone to your client if they are the registered owner.

I think sometimes these hosting companies just update something and break the website and then try and put it back together again hoping no one notices. Had it not been for me monitoring the email flow through the website where over the last couple of weeks some bot has been infiltrating the form security (honeypot) I would not have known anything about it. Was only when I was beefing up the form security that I noticed all kinds of discrepancies...........hummm, not least the *!*X*?*! 'includes' file was missing

Well, maybe you should think about the code quality you provide
The man who is mostly worried about who is going to inherit his work in 12 years does not even possess the skills to write secure code and blames bots haha funny!
It's not your hosting company fault, it's your fault the bots spam your forms. Oh well

Of course its my fault and that's why I have hopefully secured the forms using additional methods. The site has been up for 2 years and the bots have been held at bay until a couple of weeks ago so they have obviously become more sophisticated and found a way through.
I worry about my clients instantly, obviously unlike like yourself who is totally boxing himself into a tight corner and selling 'pups'. Let's hope you dont need to find work within a professional company at some stage because if you go on using that propriatory mess youre spewing out you're going to be out of luck. People with your lame attitude will just move on and become a taxi driver or shelf stacker if things get tough. They have no committment or pride in anything they do

You sound like a 2 years old in nappies - go join your buddies in the Wappler/DMX forum kranking out your 'dubious' workflows. I sit in on that on a daily basis mainly for some light humoured entertainment. Most must spend all their time trying to discover how the program works or if it's a bug. Maybe you could be a leading light in an environment you understand rather than one you don't.

But of course!
Meanwhile some little girls are crying about how bad the hosting provides are, removing their poor code from the web

Its a pity you and your code wasnt removed from the web permanently - it would be a better place for all those that take it seriously.

I'm worried that you have this obsession with 'little girls' it's really not healthy you know. Does your Mother know all about your dark secrets?

Whelp, this has run its course.
