Murray,

No you can't use it, you need a datasource defined in the CF Admin.

"Deprecated the connectString, dbName, dbServer, provider, providerDSN, and sql attributes, and all values of the dbtype attribute
except query. They do not work, and might cause an error, in releases later than ColdFusion 5."

Yes it is. Basically with CF you only use DSN's to connect to databases.

The question is specific to CF7. I'm being told that you cannot use a DSN
with CF7, and I'm trying to get an answer here! 8)

So - is your response applicable to CF7 as well as CF in general?

It really depends on what do you mean as "DSN" :-))

Up to CF 5, a system DSN (most likely ODBC) was automatically available to
the CF Server as well. Since with version 6 CF moved to Java, database
connectivity is now handled by JDBC and in order to have a "datasource", you
have to explicity create it inside CF's Admin, either manually or using CF
Admin's API.

Does it answer your question? Please let me know if you need additional
clarifications

Thank you, Massimo. Suppose you do not have access to the CF Admin, and the
host is telling you that a) you must use a DSN-less connection, because b)
they have tried to bring up a DSN using the CF Admin, and were not
successful. What would you do?

Change hosts!

That is a basic function of the CF Admin.

Yes, I think so. If the host says that they tried and weren't able to make
it work, and that as a result I will need to use a DSN-less connection,
rendering the request.dsn variables unusable, then it's a bad sign....

I am with Ken, run away from that host :-)

DSN-less aren't possible anymore with CF 6+, it's a feature not available in
JDBC.

Maybe, since they have very little understanding of CF, they left the CF
Admin API accessible to you so, in theory, you could try creating the
datasource on the fly using a script. But that's looks overkilling to me...
