Problem saving to .htpasswds...

In Dreamweaver CS4 on MAC 10.5.6, I can see the .htpasswds folder and open files from that folder when I choose Open from the File menu.  But the .htpasswds folder is not visible in the Save As window, and thus, I cannot save a new file to the .htpasswds folder via the Dreamweaver Save As selection in the File menu.

I realize that files and folders beginning with a period (.) are hidden.  I took the extra step of making hidden files and folders visible through the Terminal, but this did not solve the issue with the Save As functionality in Dreamweaver.

This was not an issue for me in CS3.  Is this a bug in Dreamweaver CS4?

But if I want to save a 'new' file to that hidden folder, the hidden folder is then not visible in the Save As dialogue box when I navigate to where it should be.

Where there's a will, there's a way...

In the Dreamweaver Files panel, select the .htpasswds folder, right-click, and select New File. Dreamweaver creates a new file, and highlights the name ready for editing. Press Return to confirm the new name. Then double-click to open the new file in Dreamweaver ready for editing.

To view hidden files in the Files panel, click the Options menu button at the top right of the Files panel, and select View > Show Hidden Files.

Thank you, but this does not make hidden folders visible in the Save As window though...

I have done some testing on a MacBook Pro, and see what you're referring to. The .htpasswords folder is visible in the Open File dialog box, but not in the Save As dialog box. Although this is inconvenient, there should be no problem saving the file, because the Save As dialog box automatically chooses the folder from which the file was opened, as shown in the following screenshot:

Although .htpasswords is not shown in the folder structure in the lower half of the dialog box, it's selected in the folder list to the right of the search field.

David, thanks so much for confirming what I was seeing – glad to confirm that it was not just an isolated issue on my machine.  Yes, if I'm saving the same file that I've opened from a hidden folder, no problem - the hidden folder is visible (it was the origin of the file being saved).  But if I want to save a 'new' file to that hidden folder, the hidden folder is then not visible in the Save As dialogue box when I navigate to where it should be.  This issue was not present in CS3 - you could open from and save to hidden folders without restriction, as they were fully visible in both the Open and Save As dialogue boxes in CS3 on MAC.  I hope that Adobe will correct this issue in their next update for Dreamweaver CS4.

It's not the way you have been used to doing it, but it works. Of course, Adobe should fix the problem, but the workaround should solve the problem for you.

Thanks for the suggestion - that's a great work around.  Thanks for the attention that you've given to my inquiry.

All the best,

JF
