When I updated my DW8 to the lastest update I found that I can not enable or installed any extensions. I have also downloaded new extensions and tried installing them using the Update Manager v1.7. However, after going through the process to install an extension I get the error " Can't update menus. Extension will not be installed.." Please advise how I can fix this problem so that I can use extensions with DW8 again. Thank you.

This is a bug in Extension Manager where from time to time one of the XML files that Dreamweaver uses gets corrupted in some fashion and Extension manager can't edit it any longer. I've found that it's Menus.xml in the User folder that tends to be the issue.

For DW8, the file should be located here:
C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration\Menus\menus.xml

Mac:
HD:Users:username:Library: Application Support:Macromedia:Dreamweaver MX 2004:Configuration:Menus:Menus.xml

So, how to to fix this issue. Sometimes you can uninstall all of your extensions and reinstall them one at a time.

If that doesn't work, then you may be able to get away with deleting the Menus.xml file (make sure it is only the one within the username folder and not within the program install folder). Note: this action will cause any extension that added menu items to have those menu items removed. disabling and reenablign the extensions shoudl bring them back.

Failing that, removing the user configuration folder (or even renaming it) may help. Note: This will cause all extensions to be removed from within Dreamweaver, so you'll have to reinstall.

If none of that works, then you may have to resort to uninstalling DW, removing the user configuration folders, and then reinstalling DW.

I have a similar problem under Vista as an administrative user but not as administrator. Running extension manager as administrator only makes the extension available for administrator so I'm having to do it for my own user. I get the can't update menus message every time I install an extension. I can disable an extension, delete the menus.xml file and add a new extension. if I try re-enabling the originally installed extension it comes up with same menus error message. It sounds like permissions/UAC in Vista but I've given everyone full access to the configuration folder and still have no joy with the extension manager. This is Dreamweaver CS3.

Just a quick update - I have now tried as administrator and have the same problem. I cannot add a new extension as it complains that "can't update menus. Extension will not be installed". I have tried this on four extensions from two companies and result is the same every time. Surely I don't have to delete a menus.xml file each time to add a dreamweaver extension but I can only use one at a time?

Only other thing that has made an entry in the menus.xml file is my source control software (dynamsoft).

Follow my process here.

1) Disable extensions (works ok).
2) Delete menus.xml
3) Start extension manager (v1.8) and re-enable all the extensions. Works on all four of them
4) Quit extension manager.
5) Reload extension manager and disable an entry.Quit again.
6) Reload and re-enable above item. All fine.
7) Load dreamweaver cs3. Sourcecontrol menu on main menu not available.
8) Quit DS CS3.
9) Reload DS CS3 and sourcecontrol is there and menus.xml file has entries in there for it.
10) Quit DS CS3
11) Load extension manager. disable an item. works fine. quit EM.
12) Reload EM and re-enable item disable above. "Can't update menus" etc etc.

Is looking like my sourcecontrol software at the moment but would welcome any tips as to what I should be looking for in the XML that may trip EM up.

I've done this with DW CS4 and it works! (ON MAC OS 10.5.7)

Got to: User/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Dreamweaver CS4/en_US/Configuration/ServerFormats/PHP_MySQL/

Then inside the PHP_MySQL folder remove the "Formats.xml" file, and re-enstall the extension.

It worked fined for me and it did not get rid of any other menus that I'm aware of.

P.S.

This is only for the "PHP Server Formats" extention and I found this out on another thread but I can't seem to find it, so sorry to whoever posted it originally, but thank you. Search for it in Adobe Exchange.

@micdim1:

thanks! this works with Vista as well

you'll  find 'formats.xml' in: C:\Users\*****\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS4\en_US\Configuration\ServerFormats\PHP_MySQL

****** stands for the user name folder, of course
