scrambled up page after editing a scroll div

Hi guys i have a question... today i was working on a page, i had to make a scrolldiv for some text. i was changing the width and the height for that one page, something i have done many times, everything seemed to work well. But then suddenly things got all mixed up on alll my other pages. The positions of many divs got put into different places, many (not all) the divs have been put into different places. i cant make any sense out of it...i know that if we change the settings of a spry divtag it can change in another pages as well if its the same div. but how can 7 or 8 divs just be relocated when they are not the same divtag that i was editing??? why the positioning? i can remember deleting the positioning of the div i was editing in css i think in the positioning tab in the top field it said 1050 or something and i deleted that, other then that i only changed the width and height. any ideas anyone?? i already tried to change the positioning of the div i was editing back to 1050 but nothing changed on the other pages... i cant figure this one out. The dispositioning is only on the computer that i am working with...so the pages still look good on other computers, but wtihin dreamweaver and also in my web browser that i am working with it is all out of wack! i would love to see everything just magicaly fall back into place by making a simple adjustment, i think its possible, only who has the magic formula?? apreciate any feedback on this, thanks....

who has the magic formula??

Back in the early days, even before Spry, I often came across the same problem. I would change just one little character and the whole site would fall ino disarray.

My magic formula? Delete the whole site and start over using modern coding techniques.

Go to https://www.w3schools.com/ and start off with the first two topics as in

thanks ben, but im looking for a dreamweaver solution. i have been working with that dreamweaver cs3 for 10 years without problems, so i am sattisfied with that program, starting from scratch is not an option now. my website consists out of hundreds of pages, also just found out the problem is not on all the pages, i recently made an update (new layout) and was busy implementing the the new update on an older page. so what i did was drag and drop all the divtags from the old layout to the new one...maybe something went wrong there.

I am sory, I stand by what I have said.

When I read tht you have been dragging and dropping elements, that is the precise problem that those versions of Dreamweaver had. More recent versions of Dreamweaver dropped (no pun intended) the ability to drag and drop because it always messed things up.

It is up to you what you want to do. If you want  more precise answer to the problem, please supply a link to the online site, in particular to the problem page.

You are probably right Ben, its just that i dont have the time to do what you'r advising, it will set me back to much, i spent years working on my website, so i dont want to throw it all away just because some things are out of place, its not even as bad as i thought, i just need to drag the out of placed divs back to their old position and things will be A Ok again...i made a slighty new layout for the mainpages, and was about to adjust the subpages as well, when the problem accured, all the subpages of the mainpages are still in order, so i only have to re adjust 20 page or so, which is ok...i'm used to updating pages. It will turn out allright after a sleepless night or 2

Thanks though of making me aware of the dragging and dropping issue...even though i have always dragged and dropped without problems i think it might have been the thing that caused the issue this time. will just copy and paste next time. You can take a look if you want, although i already have the sollution. you might find it interesting, being about someone of your generation Emperor Haile Selassie I 😉  http://tozion.org/Home.html all the mainpages are scrambled, but going to put some of them back in right order now so it might look good again by the time see it. its only the sprybar on the right corner with all the languages that i havent figured out a solution for yet, except re doing it. it used to be collapsible but seems to be stuck now. anyhow thanks for your replies...bless

Okeee, well the problem just got a bit more complicated, so i was just adjusting the position of the divtags on the homepage putting them in their old place. But what happens now, is that when i adjust the position of a div, it changes on other pages as well, when usually nothing changes on the other pages...they all work separately, nothing would effect other pages. Also... in dreamweaver everything is back in order on the home page but when i upload it it still stays scrambled, nothing changes in live mode. i am in a total Lock Down now. Its bad enough i cant leave my house, now i cant even adjust my website...whats going on???

ok well it seems like the adjustments i made to the home page DID work, i just checked it on my macbook and looks fine. it's only on the computer i work with dreamweaver that nothing changes in live view, which is still strange. But at least it does change on other computers...it should look good from your site, if you check out the other pages you will see the disaray.

The reason why it may not show on your sustem could be caused by the browser cache. Refreshing the browser a few times may help.

I enjoyed the site, especially the music videos. The site deserves a complete make-over and it need not be a pain. I have given it a try using Bootstrap 5. Due to time restraints, I have only created a small portion for you to have a look at. I do need to state that I have not optinised the code for different screen sizes. The example is for comparison only.

Copy and paste the code in a new document and have a look in your favourite browser

Thanks for taking the time and effort to create a new page, it looks similar to what i have...although only in a webbrowser,  in dreamweaver it looks totally different, the picures are situated underneath eachother on the right side of the page and then in the middle of the page, are the names of the menus, the languages placed at the top right side...but when i preview it in  webbrowser it all comes together in the way you made the example. I was looking at some bootstrap tutorials on youtube, and to be honest i dont think that is something i want or can work with. i dont know Anything about code writing...and it seems like it works that way, one would have to have some knowledge about that, and also Like to work in that way. I am perfectly satisfied with dreamweaver (except now), due to the fact that one dousnt need any knowledge of code writing, which as mentioned i dont know anything about...when i look at codes it doesnt mean anything to me, im just an amateur website developer that had about 7 days of learning to work with dreamweaver, other then what i learnt there, i dont know much...all i know is how to click on the div app button, the add div tag button, and sometimes the sprymenu bar and table button and know how to edit these divs in css, i move these divtags around to the desired position, copy paste text, a picture or a youtube code into those, and then click on the Put button to upload what i created. So i know about 7 things I can do with the program and thats all i need to create a decent looking website. For me dreamweaver is like making a painting, i need to visually see what i'm doing. Also i have a terrible memory, not able to remember all this code language...its would take a lot of time to learn all that, for me...thats just the way my brain works. for you it might all be very simple but for me its a different story. If i would have started out learning code language i would have been able to work with it, but i didnt and have created a big website in the simple fashion i just explained just by creacting some divs and then moving around. so those are the tools i have...to learn code writing will take months and my personal situation doesnt allow that, besides the fact that the website is already here, and what i have needs to be fixed within a couple of days. I expect that in the future it would be better to redo the whole website and have it made by a proffesional website designer and have a whole team of people working on the website, maintaining it...as that is my ambition, to create something big similar to wikipeadia or facebook etc...they have hundreds of people working on those sites. whereass i am alone at the moment without any real developer skilz so i have to work with the simple knowlede i have until i have the funds to hire people to take over my job. But i am far from being in that position, so for now, Dream Weaver it is...

The problem i had with dreamweaver yesterday not showing the changes i made, indeed was probaly a cache issue although i already tried refreshing the browser many times last night, today when i restarted my computer, it looked fine.

The only question i have now is why the position of the divs are changing on All the pages (with the new layout) and not just on the One page i am working on, i never had that problem before...anyway i probally have the sollution for that...as mentioned the sub pages in the main pages still have the old layout and are working fine, they dont get effected when i change something on the new layout pages. So i probally just need to change the new layout pages back to the old layout and then start redoing them again. Which of course is anoying and a lot of work...but at least the problem i have will probably be fixed. so unless you have an answer as to why the new layout pages seem to connected with eachother, having changes one page being changed on the other ones as well, that is what i'm going to do... nuff apreciation for taking the time and effort once again, i saw the amount of posts you have made over the years assisting other ones with their problems. That is very kind of you...much love. and glad you liked the page, if you liked the music, the music page might be of interest 😉   Bless

Hi @ras5CCF,

10 years of bad habits with an obsolete code editor may have seemed like a good idea at the time but it wasn't.  Browsers & web technologies changed a lot!  So did the devices that people use.

After 3-5 years, all web documents show their age such that they must be destroyed and replaced with all new code.  Welcome to web development 101 where the only constant is that everything changes.

I don't object to copying content (no code, no tags, no structure). But I object to copying deprecated code into a new HTML5 document and expecting everything to work.  It can't work because it's tainted with water from the poisoned well.

100+ page websites should be database driven, not static.  If you can't do it yourself, hire a developer to help you or switch to another web solution like WordPress which is a database-driven CMS. No expert coding skills required.

Good luck with your project!

thanks nancy for you reply, you'r right its better to work with new a updated code editor cs3 is probaly a bit outdated. but everything was working fine untill this glitch. i didnt implent the old content into a html5 document, so i dont think that was the problem. It might have been the dragging and dropping that Ben mentioned although that never caused a problem like this before, and i drag and drop often.

anyway its probaly better to work with a database, because i have to change all the pages one by one after making a simple edtit, which is anoying...do the newer dreamweaver versions have databases? i was just reading something about connecting mySQL (whatever that is) to dreamweaver. maybe that is an option...wordpress i dont know, im so used to dreamweaver, i like how i have the freedom to just move everything arround, im not sure, but i think wordpress has some limitations when it comes to that. plus i already did all the work, everyting worked fine and looks good, so it would be a pitty to throw that all away.  its just a hassle to have to change all the pages one by one after each update. Other then that i like dreamweaver a lot and dont feel like starting from scratch, even though i know thats probably something i need to do in the future anyway with the plans i have. But thats future...i dont have the funds to pay people to make and maintane a website for I, but once i do i will move in that direction. blessings...

I don't think there are any spells that can bring your jumbled page back from the brink the way you would like. What you explain sounds more to me like a file corruption than a simple "oops, I put a > where it didn't belong" sort of situation.

The easiest way to fix it will likely be to copy a page from your site that does work, and transfer the info from your broken page onto it, then overwrite the broken page by saving it with the same name.

Thanks Jon, i tried overwriting the page that caused the problem, and turned it back to its old state. but, no magic...probably the css just got saved on the other pages and needs to be changed somewhere there. I lost the page that caused the problem by bringing it back to its old state so i cant fix it from there anymore. Its probably better to just to adjust all the pages that got mixed up and put everyting back to its old position. its anoying because i put a lot of time in it, but hey whats new...strory of my dreamweaver life. Its ok...
