template file given asp extension does not save or update changes to files

A template file I created for all my asp pages has suddenly been given an extension NavTemp.dwt.asp.  The template file and files that have the template attached will not save or update.  Older posts, address this problem by suggesting, clearing cache in Windows which I have done.  The problem continues.  This makes me wonder, can template files in DW be edited to work with asp files ?  am I only asking for problems working with asp files in DW ?  Please help with any suggestions.  Thanks for any input you may have.

When you have serverside code in your page, you must have the correct extension for your document.

When you save an ASP document as a template, the template will have an extension of .dwt.asp, this is normal. You must ensure that all child documents have an ASP extension.
