Two or more 'testing' sites in htdocs folder- conflict?

In managing a cs5 testing environment, I am prompted that my 'php_test' site in xampp/htdocs may conflict with the site I set up for editing a wordpress site, since they both share the same root folder -htdocs. What is the best practice for getting around this? I saw something mentioned about 'virtual hosts', or is there a simpler way while testing?

I prefer to keep my sites in separate folders

xamp/htdocs/sitename1/

xamp/htdocs/sitename2/

xamp/htdocs/sitename3/wp/
