How are you updating the file? In DW? On the server?  It seems like somewhere in your process the file is becoming corrupted leading to that error.

I open the index.html,

change the # marks (see below) to new file names like drywall.html

I use the template to manage a huge NavBar….8 across, 10 down…like 100 pages.

PeggyInWonderland_0-1616091060761.png

File =>Save as Template. (in this case I save it as aquamarine_template.

PeggyInWonderland_1-1616091060762.png

I say YES to updating links.

Make a new file, using this template, it is called untitled.html

I save it as drywall.html

I save the aquamarine_template.dwt.

PeggyInWonderland_2-1616091060762.png

see the log below...

So half my files get updated,

Half (navbar item 6) do not get updated due to:

not updated, error in template or instance file

@PeggyInWonderland,

What you describe sounds like a corrupted Template.  And it's not too surprising given that DW Templates were never intended for 100+ page static websites.   Ideally, Templates are for small sites, approx 20-50 pages.

Beyond 50 pages, you need a dynamic solution where the heavy lifting is handled by your server.  If you can't code manually, you might consider using an online site builder like WordPress which is built with PHP and MySQL data instead of static HTML.  Because WP is all database driven, users can easily search for content on your site.  At an rate, it's something to consider.

Dreamweaver is not limited but the proprietary Templates are.  If you like to code, build your own dynamic site.  You'll never go back to plain old static sites again.  Start with something simple like Server-Side Includes.

When you're ready for more, there are commercial DW extensions to help you.
