I was looking for some legitimate web design contests to enter to build my portfolio and give me some more experience with web design. Can anyone please point me in the right direction for some legitimate web design competitons to try? thanks.

css zed garden used to be the site on which to get your design published, and is still very well thought of in the css comunity -
also Microsoft and an event apart (supported by others) run a competition once a year to display what can be done with less than 10k of code -

I don't pay much attention to "contests" these days. But you might look at Freelancer.com

The problem with web design 'contests' is that most 'winners' are not producing anything new.
Maybe that is because I'm old, and even cars/autos, fashions, films and games all take something from what has gone before, (often the worst bits ).

Please be advised of the NoSpec ideal regarding your participations and the venues you use.

Sadly, frameworks such as Bootstrap, etc., have placed many sites into the ideal of blocked sections that simply cascade down the page. Most people don't take the time or effort to break out of those standard blocks, or attempt to approach things from alternative view points and design philosophies. Cutting edge has been few and far between for many years, when created within supported approaches, the majority just go the generalized block route.
