How do I get Design view in dreamweaver 2019 to stay instead of it disappearing to live view?

I'm in a HTML class in high school and we are using dreamweaver, but need to use design view. It only shows code, split, and live view when its supposed to show a drop down arrow to show design view. When i open a new doc, it shows and stays as design like we need. But when we use the steps in the adobe files to follow along with the books, it doesn't show the drop down arrow. I have been trying to trouble shoot this issue for about three days now and have a few theories:

  • there is something inside the adobe files that make it to where design cant be accessed
  • Its a setting in the computers
  • Its a setting within dreamweaver

If you need any screenshots, or any more information, please ask me through email

Are you using DW's Fluid Grids functionality from an old version of the program by chance?

If so, what you're seeing in the latest version is "Normal and expected behavior". Newer versions of DW have done away with Fluid Grids all together and have replaced them with the Bootstrap Framework. Disabling Design View was one of Adobe's "nudge them away from the feature" additions to later versions.

You have one of a couple fixes. First, and likely better option if your resource material is out of date, would be to install an older version of the program that matches the book. You can do that as a CC subscriber by opening the CC Desktop App, clicking the Apps tab, clicking the small arrow next to DW's install/open icon and choosing Manage > Other Versions. You can then install the actual book version from the list. As a subscriber, you can actually have all listed versions installed on the same machine at the same time, they just won't run concurrently.

Another option would be to make a small edit to your Fluid Grid's css file...

Close all other files, open the Fluid Grid's css and add the X shown below:

/*

    Dreamweaver Fluid Grid Properties

    ----------------------------------

    dw-num-cols-mobile:     X 4;

    dw-num-cols-tablet:        8;

    dw-num-cols-desktop:    12;

    dw-gutter-percentage:    25;

=====================================

Then save and close the file.

Restart DW and you should have Design View from there on out on any files using that FGL's .css file.

Fluid Grids were last supported in Creative Suite 6.  You may revert to CS6 from your CC Desktop App.

  1. If you're on an individual plan, go to  Preferences in your CC Desktop App (3 dots icon).
  2. Check the box that says Show Older Apps.  See screenshots.

Go Back to Apps and scroll down to Dreamweaver.  Click button drop-down > Manage > Other Versions.

Choose CS6 from the list.
