I have just finished a project using eCart combined with the Square payment gateway for the online store. I did try OpenCart finding it difficult to adapt to the project's environment. There are other options out there, 3rd-party and self hosted.

#1 Start with the client's merchant bank account to see which payment gateways you can use.  There's no point in setting up online shopping until your client can receive payments in their bank account.

Or if your client is just starting out and has only a few products to sell, use PayPal.
