it seems to me that this places a relationship between a template and a page from that template.
in what context should you use it or encounter it?

Thanks very much for your answer!

I've been going through the Dreamweaver Classroom In A Book: 2108 Version. And I saw these tags along the bottom the sacreen; of course, they baffled me, since I'm relatively new to Dreamweaver.  Also I'm attaching a screen shot of the code and the tags along the bottom of the screen.  Additionally there is a copy of the code itself below the image.

Thanks again!

You can read more about Dreamweaver's proprietary Templates from the online user guide  -- Help menu (F1).

https://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/user-guide.html/dreamweaver/using/creating-dreamweaver-template....

I stopped using DWT Templates when I switched to Server-Side Includes (SSIs).  SSIs are fast, flexible and efficient.  And best of all you don't need Dreamweaver to use SSIs as you do with Templates.  They work on the server, so can be used with any HTML editor.

in fact now I understand better your question, about the mmtinstance tags... they are tags (either visible in the HTML code as comments, or accessible from the Dreamweaver API in order to manage some features and particularities of Dreamweaver.

if you want to explore this aspect of the IDE I advise you, the old but still excellent book by Joseph Lowery's Beyond Dreamweaver, which will allow you to approach in a comfortable and serene way the handling and especially the understanding of this architecture.

Now as Nancy says, playing with server-side inserts has become a well recommended practice to build dynamic pages by centralizing and sharing some aspects of the content.

Well, even today and despite the use of server-side code, I'm still a great fan of Dreamweaver templates, which allow me to create HTML-only pages and to dynamize them only on the client side thanks to JavaScript routines.

If you wish to explore these ways of doing things, do not hesitate to mention it, we will be happy to broaden the debate.
