Acrobat 11.0.09 With IE11 - Not Compatible With Enhanced Security

New Here ,
Apr 02, 2015 Apr 02, 2015

We've packaged Acrobat 11.0.09 for deployment with the Customization Wizard and the install goes fine.  We are having issues when try to view linked PDF files in Internet Explorer 11 (Enhanced Security is on) on Win7 64-bit PCs.  We are receiving prompts asking us to allow opening of these files.  I was under the impression that starting with Acrobat 11.0.07 IE11 Enhanced Security was fully supported?  One thing I did notice is while viewing the IE11 add-ons, the "Adobe PDF Reader" add-on shows as 32-bit, any way to load the 64-bit version of this?  Thank you.

I believe the EPM compatibility was for Adobe Reader XI and not for Acrobat XI just yet.

Hi!

I have a similiar problem in my organisation. Every computer has Acrobat Reader installed and some also have Acrobat standard/professional DC 12.

The users who have both Acrobat Reader _and_ Acrobat get an error message when trying to open a pdf in InternetExplorer 11 (32 -bit)

"Adobe Acrobat does not support Internet Explorer’s Enhanced Protection Mode (EPM). Either install the latest version of Adobe Reader or disable EPM in Internet Explorer"

The reason is that after the installation of Acrobat, it is the default reader, which doesn't support EPM.

In patch 11.0.06 I see this

"3679617 Reader fails to load in IE11 when both Reader and Acrobat are installed - IE displays a message asking the user to disable EPM."

So does this mean that it isn't fixed? Just that it gives the error message?

I have also tried the latest patches  11.0.12 and 11.0.13 we still get the same error (according to https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/epm-support-acrobat-products.html).

We have also tried to follow the guide here:

https://www.itsupportguides.com/windows-7/adobe-pdfs-wont-open-in-internet-explorer/

With "Solution 3" - to repair adobe reader so it becomes the default reader.

However this first works, but when the user then again starts Adobe Acrobat, it again overwrites the settings and becomes the default reader in all software - and again we get the fault message described above.

  • What is Adobe's suggested solution to this problem?
  • Are there any setting that makes it possible to override that Adobe reader always is the default reader in IE11?

Versions are:

  • Acrobat reader DC 2015 (15)
  • Acrobat Pro och standard XI, patch 11.0.13
  • Windows 7

I'm very grateful for getting any input or help concerning this issue

Hi guys!

I have the same issue in an enterprise environment affecting nearly 3000 PC's that we're hoping to figure out. When attempting to open any PDF from the Web with Acrobat 11 or DC installed, we simply receive an little black X in the top left corner of the web page. We've enabled the adobe reader add-in and followed all instructions on Adobe's site with no change in results. We know it's a problem with the enhanced protection mode of IE11, but EPM is a setting we must keep enabled in our environment. Furthermore, when Reader 11 or Reader DC is installed, this is not an issue. The work around right now has been to install reader and Acrobat simultaneously, which seems redundant and is causing update issues each time a new version is released. We really need to know why Acrobat has this problem, but reader does not. Acrobat is required for the majority or our customer base, so simply running reader is not a fix. Does anyone know how to resolve this when running Acrobat 11 or DC? It's become a very big problem for us.

Thanks in advance.

Brian

I am seeing the exact same issue with 11.0.20 (we just adopted this IE11 control).  IS staff only have Reader XI and we tested the control for over a month with no issues.  Acrobat XI users (not in IS) have issues galore!

Did you find a resolution?  (I have not yet tried to install Reader in parallel...looks like a lot of work and a lot of confusion, duplicate patching, etc.)
