Hello,
we deploy Adobe Reader on approx. 60 Clients and 18 Terminalservers through GPO. This worked fine since version 10.x.
Today I was downloading AdbeRdrUpd11003.msp and try to slipstream it into our 11.0.2 AIP. It failed stating "Another version of this product is already installed..."
I was using msiexec /a <path2msi> /p <path2msp> like i did many times before.
Lastly i was able to sucesssfully slipstream the 11.0.03-msp into a newly created AIP with 11.0.0.
However, I cannot install it on any Client. The installation abort with "Another version of this product...". In the logfile i found Errorcode 1638 which does just mean the same.
Does anyone know whats the cause of this behavior resp. what i have to look for?
The relavent parts in the msi/mst seems to be OK, except the MinVersions in the upgrade table which were set to 10.0.03.
Changing the values to 11.0.02 didn't help, still the same error.
Thanks in advance
H.
Well, the AIP guide clearly mentions this,
http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/AdminGuide/aip.html
The patterns below list the acceptable AIP patch patterns for Windows and Macintosh deployments

The Admin Guide and Release Notes both state the planned/quarterly updates are cumulative to the last MSI. 11.0 > 11.0.03 is correct.
Sounds like your first failed install messed with your system. Things to try:

Hi Ben,
thank you for your reply.
Our updatepath so far worked fine and is according to the Admin Guide:
11.0.00 (MSI)
11.0.01 slipstream into 11.0.00
11.0.02 (sec upd) slipstream into 11.0.01
Even reinstall 11.0.02 through GPO on a cleaned up machine run flawlessly.
An installation of 11.0.03 (slipstreamed into 11.0.00) on a machine with preinstalled version 11.0.02 fails with "Another version..."
On the other hand, an installation of 11.0.03 on a cleaned up machine finish successfully.
Running the 11.0.03-msp against 11.0.02-installation fails.
On the logfile I found:

Hello
I think I am having a similar problem to yourself.
We initially slip streamed version 11.0.01 into 11.0.00, this worked fine and it also went smoothly when we deployed the patch for 11.0.02 (AdbeRdrSecUpd11002.msp), however, when I try and deploy the update for 11.0.03 (AdbeRdrUpd11003.msp), I get error 1642. If I manually attempt to install the 11.0.03 patch I get the following error message ....
The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.
I have verified that version 11.0.02 is showing as installed but it still doesnt like the 11.0.03 patch.
Is there a problem with the 11.0.03 patch?
Many thanks
S.

Hi,
Make sure you are applying correct patch of Reader 11.0.03
There are two products for Reader.
One being Adobe Reader XI and another Adobe Reader XI MUI
And so, there are two different patches for these two products for 11.0.03
One being AdbeRdrUpd11003.msp to be applied on Adobe Reader XI
and other being AdbeRdrUpd11003_MUI.msp to be applied on Adobe Reader XI MUI
Thanks,
Subrato

Hello and thanks for your reply.
Apologies as I got it wrong on my first post - looking at my original files I think i deployed AdbeRdr11001_en_US.exe
This was because when i looked at the download page it only listed the MUI version for version 11 and we normally deploy the all languages patches
So if i installed AdbeRdr11001_en_US.exe where do i find the patches for that? Surely the all languages patches should work?
Cheers

You can navigate to Control Panel > "Add or Remove Programs" (On Win XP) or" Program and Features" (On Win 7 or Vista) to find out what Reader you have installed.
You can find the patches at, ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/11.x/11.0.03/misc/

I'm having the same issue. I have slipstreamed it up to 11.0.02 but it fails on AdbeRdrUpd11003.msp with the error:

I would love to know what the problem is here also.. i just tried creating an AIP from 11.0 then patched with 11.0.1 then with 11.0.2, everything went fine.. then finally got to 11.0.3 and crash.. burn
Error i got was The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the windows installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer that you have the correct upgrade patch.
here is my upgrade patch command im using..
msiexec /a c:\AIP\AcroRead.msi /p c:\ARDownload\AdbeRdrUpd11003.msp
Fails every time..

sigh.... ok just realized if you had an AIP already with 11.0.02 installed scrap it and start from scratch..
make a new AIP with just 11.0.00 then skip 11.0.1 and 11.0.2 and go straight to 11.0.3.msp and patch it.. leave out 11.0.1 and 11.0.2, dont even download them..
Where in the heck is this stuff written down?? Dont tell me just right here if so that is just unacceptable. And why did i have to skip 11.0.1 and 11.0.2???
Create your C:\AIP folder
extract your AdbeRdr11000_en_US.exe to C:\ARDownload
msiexec /a C:\ARDownload\AcroRead.msi
msiexec /a c:\AIP\AcroRead.msi /p C:\ARDownload\AdbeRdrUpd11003.msp
Done msi table reads 11.0.03 as version in the AIP!

It's written down the Admin Guide which is part of the Enterprise Toolkit:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/AdminGuide/aip.html
Note also the first answer above states that:
The Admin Guide and Release Notes both state the planned/quarterly updates are cumulative to the last MSI. 11.0 > 11.0.03 is correct.

Hi,
J$IN, how did you try the update to 11.0.03?
I did it on the cmd to test if it works: msiexec /i \\path\to\AcroRead.msi TRANSFORMS=\\Path\To\AcroRead.mst /lv \\Path\To\Log
This failed, also the direct start of the msp on a system which has a deployed installation of Adode Reader.
I had the same PATCH SEQUENCER error like you.
What helped in my case was deploying it through GPO.
I slipstream 11.0.03.msp into 11.0.00 AIP, create a new GPO and assigned it to a test machine with 11.0.02 installed. It worked fine in the lab.
I'll deploy it tomorrow or Monday and we'll see 🙂

has it right. You need to extract the base version and just skip 11.0.01 and .02 and just patch it directly to 11.0.03

Yes, as per Adobe Admin Guide, quarterly updates are cumulative (pls refer to reply #1 from brogers_1)

They should still say something on the update that "if you are patching an administrative install, this is cumulative and only patch the x.00 version" or something to that effect

Not sure where we should say that other than in the enterprise documentation. If you have an idea, pass it along.

Hi,
we rolled out today and it ran smoothly, no complains so far 🙂
However, I still don't know why I cannot apply the patch directly by doubleclicking the msp or via cmd msiexec /i <AIP\Acroread11003.msi> on deployed installations.

Do you mean to say you have Reader 11.0.02 AIP installed and you wanted to apply 11.0.03 AIP on it via CmdLine ? Well, if this is what you wanted, you can refer to the below forum link,

Subrato,
first i try to apply the 11.0.03-msp into an 11.0.02-AIP: failed
Then I create a new AIP of 11.0.00-MSI and applied 11.0.03-msp: Success
After that i run msiexec /i <aip\Acroread.msi TRANSFORMS=Acro.mst on a machine with a GPO-installation of 11.0.02. This failed with "Another version..."
The same result when I doubleclick the 11.0.03-msp on that machine.
Anyway, now I know how to handle it in the future.
Thanks for helping

Its all and well in the admin guide, but some people download from the ftp site on adobe.com and it would be nice if you guys just included a txt document stating this download is a quarterly update or a rollup maybe contain a link to the admin guide or a note for people to look for the admin guide for instructions on patching your product?
There are a two ways you guys present to us for downloading these packages, http, ftp. You could place a readmefirst.txt in the ftp sites and a brief writeup on the http side to point back to the admin guide for instructional purposes to inform your customers.
