Three days ago my FP stopped working last thing I did was download http://http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/?ref=google_pctools_en&gclid=CI6s68uE6qMCFSFVgwodTRwP3Q...
My Norton Anti-virus subscription ended and was looking for a free one to replace it with. Everything was working fine aftr the installation but I had not gone back online to surf the web until the following morning. As soon as I opened up Firefox it froze so i opened task manager to close it. That's when the FP stopped working. I keep getting the missing plug-in pop up saying I need Adobe Flash Player.
I have been looking in the forums and mostly everything is for IE I personally don't use it and would like to get FF running with FP properly.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled multiple times with restarting my computer after each time.
In my addons Adobe only shows up for Acrobat Reader. I have no ActiveX control and do not have DML installed.
Currently only firewall running is windows and I am the Admin for this laptop.
I also tried this links suggestion http://http://tutorial.downloadatoz.com/activate-flash-player-in-ie-firefox.html.
Currently in my aFlash folder i have:
FlashInstall Text Doc 87KB
flashplayer.xpt XPT File 1KB
FlashUti10i_Plugin App 228KB
NPSWF32 DLL File 5,830KB
I'am running:
Vista 32Bit
Firefox 3.6.8
Shockwave Player 11.5
Any help is very much appreciated and look forward to any suggestions.
Side note: My scroll bar is on my left side now do not know how to get it back on the right side.

Hi, I just read your info. I am going to take about a short break and then I'll be back on to help you. Don't do anything else yet. I see what part of the problem is so if you can just wait a bit.
Thanks,

Hi, sorry for the delay, had phone calls and email help to do. Ok, I need to know if in your Control Panel is Norton listed there and did you Remove Norton? If you removed it from the Control Panel did you also use the Removal Tool? It does not sound as if you did.
Let me know on that.

Its ok I just appreciate your follow-up.
Yes Norton is completly removed and I have used the tool remover as following your recommendations to IE users.

ok, thanks. Did you get any message after using the Removal Tool that is was successful or any message at all?
Are there any Norton plugins, addons or extensions in FF?
In the plugins for FF do you have the SWF vs 10.1.82.76 and Enabled?
I'm assuming you used that Removal Tool BEFORE Installing PC Tools? or After?
Before Norton, no other Anti-Virus? Were you running any other AV or Anti-Spyware program when Norton was on?
Something is definitely conflicting with your browser at least. Since that PC Tools was the last thing, then it is the prime suspect. What kind of add ons, plugins or extensions did PC Tools Install into the browser?
Do you have Skype, RealPlayer or Quicktime in FF?
Thanks,
eidnolb

With the removal tool I got no message at all.
As for plugins in FF:
2007 Microsoft Office System 12.0.4518.1014(Office Plugin) Enabled
Adobe Acrobat 9.3.4.218 (Adobe PDF Plugin) Enabled
Cooliris 1.11.0.0 (Photo Plugin) Enabled
Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.140.8 (NPRuntime Script Plugin) Enabled (Has a security or stability issue warning)
MetaStream 3 Plugin 3.5.0.36 Disabled (Greyed out cannot enable)
Mozilla Default Plugin1.0.0.15 Enabled
Quicktime Plugin 7.6.7.0 Enabled
Windows Genuine Advantage 1.9.9.1 Enabled
All have been checked for updates too..there is no SWF file at anytime in plugins since this issue has started.
With PC Tools it did come with a toolbar which was removed before Tool Removal was used,
Norton was ran by itself I had the 3in1 box set installed for the past 2 years. No other AV before it.

Thanks for the plugin info. You keep it lean, I do too. Oh, before I forget. I went to that link you listed as to where you got PC Tools. What came up was something about Road Runner?? Did you actually download from that link? I didn't see anything that you could download, the site was almost blank. I wonder if you picked up a malware.
Ok, back to the plugins. The Java Deployment Toolkit should be disabled unless you are a developer. I don't know why Java insists on downloading and Installing that. I have it disabled and if I'm not mistaken Mozilla Firefox has it on the Blocklist. I'll need to check the version in a minute, but it doesn't matter I would disable it. It's an old version anyway and is a security risk. Any old versions of anything is, by the way.
You must have Java, while we're checking things out you might as well post back all of your Java entries. Anything older than Java JRE U 21 should be removed. If you don't have JRE U 21, you can get it from www.java.com I would remove all old entries first tho.
Is that Quicktime plugin the latest? Just make sure it is.
MetaStream sounds familiar, but can't place it at the moment, too late for thinking:-)
Now none of my suggestions would cause any of what you are experiencing, just thot I'd mention them.
Oh, the fact that you don't have the SWF is part of the problem. Your Flash files for FF are ok. But that SWF is the control that works with the Flash files and must be there and Enabled. I think the other part of the problem is that PC tools. Is it an Anti-Virus or just Anti-Spyware, like Spyware Doctor?
Here is what I would do now: I would Uninstall that PC Tools. Then I would consider AVG FREE edition, available from www.filehippo.com Decline the Toolbar, the LinkScanner etc. Download it and SAVE it to your Desktop for now. Then I would go to www.malwarebytes.com and download and Install the FREE version. It has a clean user face and very easy to use and fast. Put it on your Desktop as it is an on demand program. Update it, then run a full scan. If MBAM finds anything, it can remove it.
Then I would download and Install the AVG FREE.
That is what I would do. Just a suggestion.

You can think about this, as I am ready to sign off in a few minutes. Long day! Ha-Ha

I want back to that link I listed and I don't know why, but it was broken. So i googled "PC Tool" and found the same one. Maybe if you google it yourself it will work for you. Might have some issue with inserting to forum. Also it is a antispyware program not anti-virus.
As for Java in my extensions i had:
Java Console: 6.0.12/6.0.13/6.0.14/6.0.05
I uninstalled those and checked my Java through Control Panel->Programs->Java and it was not up-to-date even though when I hit update it said it was. So I manually patched it in after un-installing the extensions.
Thank you for verifying AVG I was goining to ask you about installing that later on, but wanted to ask your suggestion. Also will be using the MBAM tonight to see if it finds anything.
One more thing in Macromed I have two Shockwave folders. Shockwave 8 and 10, 8 is completly empty and 10 is the one that has my question.
In it are:
Xtras Folder with .X32 Files
Control DLL File
dirapiX DLL File
DynaPlayer DLL File
im132X DLL File
Plugin DLL File
PluginPing DLL File
Proj DLL File
shockwave_Projector_Loader DCR File
SwInit App File
SwLogo Bitmap Image
SwMenuX DLL File
SwOnce DLL File
I highlighted SwInit because is this an important application for flash? I tried right clicking and running as administrator but nothing happens. Hope I didn't do anything by trying that and if it has nothing to do with FP ignore this.
Again I appreciate your help and will be waiting on further instructions.

Hi, ok on that PC Tools link. I always use the websites anyway. I don't want PC Tools, but just wanted to see what you had Installed. I didn't think it was an anti-virus either.
Updating Java, glad you got that done and especially removing those older versions. MBAM did a good job:-) I would use it a few more times just in case any malware moved and changed names. Some malware will have many names and that is why it is hard to find and remove sometimes. After using MBAM several more times then you could use it at least once a day, especially before you are ready to shut down.
I like AVG also, except some of the add ons they Install, but they can be disabled.
On the Shockwave Flash Player(completely different from Flash Player) I don't have it Installed. The Shockwave 8 folder, I would just right click and delete it, not needed. On the 10 folder, let me find the latest version and then I would delete each file that is in that 10 folder and then I would delete the folder. Don't do anything until I get the link for you.
I know people update, but I like to remove the old versions and then Install the new, cleaner that way in my opinion.
Will post back later.

Thank you for clearing that up about the shockwave folder.
I tried the link and and the installer which I already have in my documents. Both didn't help with trying to get the SWF in my plugins. Before when I tried to check what version I had it was saying 10.1.53...forget the rest off the top of my head, but now nothing appears. Just wanted to let you know that. Maybe something has changed.

Hi, On the Shockwave Player folder, ok to delete the vs 8 folder. Hold up on the vs 10 Folder, I have been reviewing and the opinion is to KEEP the folder itself. As soon as I finish reviewing I'll post for that. We'll put the Shockwave Player on the back burner for now. I want to get Flash Player for FF squared away first.
By the way, didn't you post at first that you had Shockwave Player version 11.5?
On the SWF, so you don't find this in your FF plugins? Are the Flash files for FF still in the Sys32 Flash folder?
I think what is needed is that we'll Uninstall Flash Player and Install it again. I'll get you the new links. Don't use any links you have unless you know for sure they are the latest. Whenever a new version of Flash Player comes out, the Uninstaller and the Installers change; at least that is my understanding. We'll need to disable a couple of AVG items before, just to be sure there is no problem.
Check on that Shockwave Player vs 11.5 and the Flash files in the Flash folder.
I'm taking a late lunch in a few minutes.

The Shockwave Player is no longer there in my plugins. I have the current installer in my documents but have not installed unless you say so. As for the Flash files they are all the same still. Nothing has changed in there. The installer is version 11.5.8.612. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled FP again no changes. Still get the missing plugin pop-up.

Hi, Ok. I think we'll Uninstall Flash Player and Install it again. I would like you to use these that I am going to post.
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html Download this Uninstaller and SAVE it to your Desktop.
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe Download this Installer for FF and SAVE it to your Desktop.
Once you have that done, then go into your FF plugins, addons and Extensions and DISABLE ALL OF THEM. You can Enable them after the Install. This includes any Toolbars and AVG add ons.
Then check in your system tray(area near the clock) and disable any applications there that use Flash, such as any and all messenger services, msn, yahoo, etc.
Right click on the AVG icon there and Open. Double click on the Resident Shield. UN check the option "Resident Shield Active" SAVE the changes. Then with the AVG User Interface still open, double click on the LinkScanner(if you have it) and UN check the option "Enable AVG Search-Shield" and the "Enable Active Surf-Shield" and SAVE the changes.
Then you will Close all browsers and will be only looking at your Desktop.
RUN the Uninstaller and when it is finished, Reboot your Computer. When it is fully Rebooted, then RUN the Installer and when that is finished, Reboot your Computer.
Now go back and Re-Enable all of the AVG that you Disabled, and any in the system tray.
Post back what is now in your Flash folder and look in your plugins for the SWF and post that info back also.
Try to follow these instructions exactly please.
If you have any questions, just ask.
Thanks,
eidnolb

Again no SWF plugin in FF. Everything is still disabled except AVG.

Hi, I am really puzzled with that. Ok, I picked up some info this afternoon on the Shockwave Player and the location of where it should be. Let me check on that. I just don't know what could be preventing that SWF. I have seen this happen some time back and as I recall it was the Anti-Virus BitDefender. Several people using FF could not for the life of themselves get that SWF to Install. We had 3 to 4 threads going on it. You've never had that have you?
I have not had time to check, but what is that metastream?
Did you go to the test site since you Installed? It wouldn't hurt to try again.
What does youtube do now?
We have Disabled everything so I don't know what is left that would block it. I'll have to do some searching. Why don't you go to Mozilla Firefox and see what you can find out. I'm sure you can't be the only one with this issue. Search for "Can't Install the SWF in FF"
Thanks,

I went back to the testing page http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/
And for Shockwave Player I am getting a failed error.
This was after trying the online install.
As for FP still getting no movie to verfiy install or what version is installed.

Hi, thanks for the screenshot. So there is no plugin for the version of Shockwave Player version 10 that you have. The latest version is 11.5.8.612 which you said you had the Installer for in your Doc folder.
I want you to go here: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\SHOCKWAVE\ and see if Shockwave is there.
Then I want you to go here: C:\Windows\system32\Adobe\Shockwave and see if Shockwave is there.
Post back and tell me what is in either or both places.
Thanks,

ble. Didn't realize how big I made it haha.
Ok first off in Macromed there is still Shockwave 10 which I did not touch due to your recommendation. In it are the same files I listed on post #10.
As for Adobe it has Shockwave 11.
In it are:
Xtras (.X32 Files) File Folder
Control DLL File 492 KB
dirapi DLL File 1,760 KB
DynaPlayer DLL File 9 KB
gi DLL File 772 KB
gt Application 2,172 KB
gtapi DLL File 78 KB
im132 DLL File 988 KB
Plugin DLL File 364 KB
Proj DLL FIle 436 KB
SCC DLL File 134 KB
shockwave_Projector_Loader DCR File 13 KB
SwHelper_1158612 Application 457 KB
SwInit Application 112 KB
SwLogo Bitmap 16 KB
SwMenu DLL File 92 KB
uninstaller Application 86 KB

Hi, I thot the screenshot was fine, some are way too small. Ok, now finally this is making sense. For whatever reason that folder in the Macromed\Shockwave is the version 10 and it was never Uninstalled. And the Adobe\Shockwave has the version 11.
You can then safely go and right click on that version 10 location and delete each file that is in it and then delete the folder.
Now I have a question on the Adobe\Shockwave that has version 11. This is not the latest version 11.5.8.612 is it? Is this Adobe\Shockwave vs 11 an old version also?
Let me know.
Thanks,
eidnolb

Hi, ok so then Shockwave Player is version 11.5.8.612 that is now Installed in the Adobe\Shockwave folder.
At least we have that taken care of. Now to find out why the SWF plugin can't be Installed. Did you get a chance to review some of the things in Post#22?
Let me know especially what Firefox has on this and also what metastream is.
Thanks,

For metastream I do not remember what it was for but I am unable to do anything to it. It is completly greyed out and is un enabled.
Norton Antivirus is the only AV I have ever had on this laptop since I bought it brand new at Best Buy. And Norton was pre installed I just continued the coverage when I could afford it.
I have been to the test site every time you had me do something to see if anything has changed and still get the missing plugin grey box.
Same thing with youtube. I try to watch a video and get this:
I checked the forums in FF and not to much for this issue with FP is mentioned. There were somethings about FF 3.6.6 nothing new about 3.6.8. I did find one thing however related to Adobe Reader to go into Tools>Options>Security there is an exception box to allow websites for add ons. I added www.adobe.com to the list as well as get.adobe.com,
Hopefully these screen shots help a bit more.

Hi, yes those screenshots are informative. They both are saying the same thing and when they speak of plugin, they don't mean the SWF that we are dealing with, they are essentially saying you need Flash Player:-) Terms are confusing, when I say plugin I mean plugin as something added to the browser by Firefox or other non-IE browsers and most users mean that also. But youtube and Adobe use plugin as meaning Flash Player.
Have you checked this Firefox plugin site, it tells you what you need? I was using IE and went to it and it informed me I needed Firefox, LOL, so I switched to the FF browser and all is ok in the world again:-)
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
Now, I thot that metastream sounded familiar but couldn't place it. This has a connection to Viewpoint Media Player, which Installs itself without permission on a computer and when updated Installs an Updater. It comes from AOL mostly and is considered Malware. I had this info in a folder, but the word metastream threw me off until I reviewed it. AOL is sometimes packaged in different computers when sold. Some users get this by using AOL email. Anyway, it's malware and you may want to check in your program files or Control Panel to see if it's there. I'm still checking some links I have so if I find more info, I'll let you know.
Thanks,
eidnolb

Wow ok thats great to know that its a maleware...fail best buy. I checked in control panel I don't see it there. Also I had been to that link before I started my first post. Everything was updated at that time and nothing new at the moment.
You had mentioned that metastream mostly comes from AOL but that was never in my start up package. Do you know of any other programs it may come with that I can look for?
