Flash Player 10.1 installed, but not working in any browser, or showing up on C:

New Here ,
Sep 29, 2010 Sep 29, 2010

I recently updated my flash player, however since then, websites requiring flash do not seem to fully load. However, it should also be noted that there is no notification indicating I need to install the software. Sites such as youtube will load, but fail to display the video I want to view, and showing only a black box. Also, sites I need for my HSC preparation are not working, such as the Board of Studies Online Multiple Choice, and Maths Online. The web page will load, indicating "done" in the bottom left corner of the screen, but the screen will be white.

I have tried the following:

  • un-installing, and re-installing (numerous times)
  • Restarting the system after both un-installing and re-installing
  • Checking all mentioned websites on three browsers --> Firefox 3.5.11, IE 8, Google Chrome. All presented the same outcome: blank pages etc.
  • Ensuring that flash was enabled in all above browsers

My operating system is 32 bit; Vista (Have checked this file--  C:/Windows/System32/Adobe -- and found that the flash player files are absent despite being 'told' it has successfully installed. After which the 'movie'/'f' symbol does not show up in the installation check online)

I assume all the above browsers are 32bit as well, however I'm not sure how to check this.

Please help... I have been searching forums for hours and trying various methods to attempt to fix the problem myself, but have been unsuccessful. It has become increasingly frustrating with the approaching HSC only a couple of weeks away !

That looks correct - everything is there: the ActiveX for IE, and the plugin for Firefox.  (Chrome has the Flash Player preinstalled; it cannot be installed or uninstalled.)

Can you check both IE and FF if Flash Player (Shockwave Flash object) is enabled?

for FF:

Shockwave Flash 10.1.85.3 is enabled

for IE:

Shockwave Flash Object is enabled.

If it is inbuilt in chrome, why isn't it working? :S

Ok, no worries. And no, I haven't been able to see it since the update and it stopped working. It doesn't show up in any of my browsers.

Ok, I'm back...

When you go to http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ - can you see the Settings option when you right-click it?  If so, can you disable hardware acceleration?

Sorry, I've been studying, and am about to prepare dinner... So will come back soon, but in IE, when I right click, the only options are "About Adobe Flash Player 10..." and "Movie not loaded..." - which doesn't allow selection.

I've also been away (at the dentist!)...

You present me with a very unusual situation; the only thing I can currently think of is a total uninstall and reinstall of Flash Player.  I know that you have already done this several times, but I don't know what methods you used.  Try this:

If that does not solve your problem, we may need to check if there are any driver updates available for your graphics/video/display adapter.

Well, unfortunately I cannot say it has gotten any easier. No luck ... in either browser. And Chrome still isn't working either. Guess there's a first for everything? lol Sorry... if this is a pain. lol

Right-click on the Flash object, then select Settings.  On the Display panel, uncheck Hardware Acceleration.

I'm having a similar problem. Flash Player 10.1 is supposedly installed but I never get the confirming video on the site. It will not play any internet videos,

ones I have added to facebook or those on youtube or espn etc. It was playing the a day ago and my husband thought something was wrong this morning and uninstalled and reinstalled from the adobe site and no videos work now. Also he could not get his spanish word of the day which also uses flash. I'm running XP with IE. Can you help? I tried the hardware disable setting you suggested but I can not find a place to disable on the site. It just says the movie not loaded when I right click where the movie is supposed to be on the Adobe site. I don't see anything for settings.

There is no flashinstall.log file in that folder. There is a FlashInstall file that opens in Notepad when I click on it.  The contents of that file are below.  Does this give you any clue as to what is wrong?  It is WAY beyond my techincal competence.

I think we should.  And sorry too - I cannot be here in the forum every day.

Can you open Device Manager, and tell me exactly what Display Adapter you have?  Then check its properties and tell me the driver version that is installed.
