Hello,
I have recently bought a new system. Everything runs perfectly except for one critical problem; I can't view flash videos or anything played in a web browser by flash player.
Animated flash advertisements will load to the first couple of frames, I will hear a bit of noise and then a brief 1-2 second system hang and straight in to a bluescreen. Same goes for youtube etc, might see a frame, if that, a brief noise and hang/bluescreen. This has occurred since I have purchased the PC.
I have attempted to fix the problem by updating my graphics drivers to the latest, updating flash player to the latest, updating sound drivers to the latest.
System:
AMD i5 750
ATI Radeon 5870
Realtek audio
Windows 7 Professional 32-bit
Mozilla Firefox 3.6.6 -------------> Flash player 10.1
I am just viewing the bluescreen dump file, there is no bug check string, however it seems to indicate an AMD/graphics driver causing the conflict.

There are 7 bluescreen dumps on the minidump file, they are all identical to the above.

So, can anyone help?
1 Correct answer
That's great news.
FP 10.1 allows many more GPU devices to use hardware acceleration than previous versions. Not all work well, and I don't know if this is a hardware or software (driver) problem. Disabling hardware acceleration, and sometimes updating the device drivers, will avoid the various problems that arise from incorrectly functioning hardware acceleration.
Sorry, I do not have very deep insight into the whole business of GPU acceleration.

Can you see the Flash animation at http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ without the system crashing?
If yes, can you right-click on it and disable hardware acceleration from the Settings panel?

Pat,
That flash animation seems to work. I have disabled hardware acceleration. Will test youtube now, standby.

Pat,
Hardware acceleration seems to be the culprit. Do you have any suspicions why acceleration would be causing bluescreen?

i'm having the same problem as the OP,
System:
Intel Q6600
ATI Radeon 4850 (drivers v10.9)
Realtek audio
Windows vista home premium 32-bit (auto-updates)
Chrome 6 & ie8 Flash player 10.1
my BSOD returned the error code: 0x00000116 (0x8505F150, 0x8F1E98B0, 0x00000000, 0x00000002)
atikmpag.sys - Address 8F1E98B0 base at 8F1E4000, datestamp today
it started before last summer, it doesn't happen often but lets just say its making me rather nervous to use youtube and other sites that use flash now.
i've read allot of people have this problem and have traced it to using flash. i hope somebody at adobe is listening and not trying to blame hardware makers or drivers about this problem.
i disabled hardware acceleration, i hope this does the trick until a real fix can be found
btw if any flash animation gives a BSOD how else could we turn it off ? Think about it for a second people

The error you provide clearly says "atimpag.sys". That is not a file
from Flash Player, that is a file from ATI. If you Google that file, you
will find many people reporting problems with it using many different
applications.

Hoping is not very productive. It may be more productive if you raise
this issue in an ATI forum and provide them with the core dumps, but
your graphics card is over 2 year old so don't expect too much.

it happens with people who have either ati cards or nvidia card. do your research before assuming its only ati people.
You say my card is 2 years old, well by now it should be fixed in their driver should'nt it?
And yet, this problem did not occur to me in flash v9 , only since v10. And only when i visit flash based websites like youtube and various other video websites. you see a pattern or do i have to keep going?
You can deny it all you want but in my experience flash is the cause of this problem.
As long that you refuse to see flash as the one causing this problem on both platforms, it won't get fixed.
What a shame, its a real let down.
