Flash player crashing

New Here ,
Jun 08, 2011 Jun 08, 2011

Hi.

As you propably can guess I have problems with Adobe flash player. First it was sometimes that I couldn't view videos on Youtube, but now (after a fiew uninstalls and reinstalls) I always get a crashreport. I'm running mozilla firefox 4 on windows 7 64-bit. When I want to view a film clip firefox becomes unclickable (in lack of better words) and the little loading circle on th clip freezes. Then i can't do very much except use the taskmanager and close Firefox or wait a couple of minutes until the youtube window is replaced with a window saying: Adobe flash player has crashed. It's nothing weird when i install it or anything (Or atleast not according to me, you may think differently) it's first when i want to view my videos it's not working (or using skype but that's another issue I believe).

Thanks if you can help me, it's much appreciated.

Hi, It sounds as if perhaps the Shockwave Flash Plugin may be Disabled. Can you check and make sure it is Enabled?

Do you use any adblock or adblock plus? If so have you tried turning it off?

You can also test here and if Flash Player is working properly you should be able to see the Flash Player logo(Red F) animate(spin) Also what version of Flash Player is Displayed as Installed?

http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

What version of IE do you use and is Flash Player Installed? Are you having the same problem with IE?

Regarding Skype, some time back Mozilla Firefox put a soft block on Skype due to the crashing of the FF browser. This was because of a Toolbar that Skype Installed. I don't know the status of that however, but it might be something to check.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Thanks alot eidnolb.

I have checked my plugins and everything appears to be fine, shockwave flash plugin is enabled. And still I can't get videos to show up. I also did as you said regarding IE and it's not working either.

Also I don't have any adblock or adblock plus installed. And I can't see your spining logo thingy. only some text that appears to be commands.

Thanks for the skype thing too but it's not working either. I manage to login now though, but I can't do anything.

The shockwave flash version is 10.3.181.22 or at least it appears to be.

Hi, Thanks for checking. Now one thing about the test site to see the Flash Player logo. As soon as that site opens is when you'll see the logo. You don't have to click on anything or do anything. You will see the listing of the latest Flash Player versions for the various Platforms.

Try that site again, from the thread here instead of your email and let me know on that. I don't see an "commands".

Also Win 7 with the Service Pack 1 has a new feature and it's the ActiveX Filtering. You can review these settings and set them how you want.

To turn on ActiveX Filtering
In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, point to Safety, and then click ActiveX Filtering.

To turn off ActiveX Filtering on a specific website
In Internet Explorer, click the Filter button in the Address bar, and then click Turn off ActiveX Filtering.

To turn off ActiveX Filtering on all websites
In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, point to Safety, and then click ActiveX Filtering.

This is the Microsoft site: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie-9/features/activex-filtering

Did you find if that Skype Toolbar is Installed?

Thanks,

eidnolb

Hi, I see from the Firefox Forum that there are a lot of posts about crashing. Also I'm looking at the latest on Skype. Will let you know what I find.

Extensions in FF sometimes cause issues, so you may want to check those. Also make sure all of your plugins are updated.

I know the ActiveX Filtering is for IE and didn't know if you had Flash Player Installed for that browser or not. But in case you did, I wanted to know if IE is crashing.

Any Anti-Virus plugins/addons/?

Thanks,

eidnolb

Hi again. The latest on Skype is to Uninstall the Extension or disable it however it's done. The following site is about FF crashing and look under the "3 replies" to follow. You'll have to have an account there in order to post the report.

https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/790037?s=Firefox+4.0.1+problem+with+crashing&as=s

Now before you follow the reporting of a crash, let me know what Anti-Virus/Spyware programs you have Installed.

What we are looking for is anything that is causing this conflict with FF, so we have to look at various sources.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Hi,I do reall see the adobe logo when i click on that link and it does stand: Adobe flash player succesfully installed.

But, I still can't see Youtube videos. Or well I could a couple of hours ago and I could also use skype. But now again I can't. It's really weird.

I have also uninstalled the skype toolbar. I even inactivated all the other plugins except shochwave player and it still doesn't work.

I quite embarrassed of my computer security and I know i probably should improve it. I use the free version of Ad-aware and windows firewall(if that counts as a anti virus/spyware program).Though Ad-aware was installed after I had problems with adobe flash player so that would be weird if it was the cause.

Thanks alot.

Hi  It could be that there is some malware on the system and Ad-Aware isn't the best to detect it or remove it. I'm going to recommend MSE, which is Microsoft Security Essentials. This is a free program from Microsoft and includes an Anti-Virus and an Anti-Spyware feature. One good thing is that it does not Install any addons in the browsers:-) It does not contain a Firewall, but you already use the Windows Firewall and that is fine.

I would download it and SAVE it to your Desktop. Then Close all browser windows, disable Ad-Aware. Then Open MSE and Install it. After it is Installed I think it will update automatically and run a Scan. If anything is found, just follow the instructions to remove it.

I think we need to do this first and make sure your system is clean.

Site for MSE: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Let me know if you have any questions about this.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Ok, thanks. I've downloaded and scanned with MSE and it didn't find anything. My computer is clean.

And skype has been solved by it self, so thats nice, but thanks for your advice anways.

So  the only problem that remains is the problem with the adobe flash  player. It's really unpredictable when it doesn't work or when it works.  Sometimes it does sometimes not. I can't seem to find a common factor, except that i can usually watch videos in the beginning of a session but after that I've had it on sleep mode or similiar it won't.

Thanks.

Hi, Well that is good news that MSE didn't find anything. It's a good program and is very light on resources:-)

Glad Skype cleared up, most likely due to the Toolbar issue maybe.

I'm going to check a couple of other things for you, but will be offline for a time.

Do you have Flash Player Installed for IE? I wanted to see if you did, what version it is(Flash Player that is) Could you check at that test site and let me know?

I'll check back in a little later.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Hi, I think we are going to have to troubleshoot Firefox separately from IE. First, since you now have MSE Installed, try disabling Ad-Aware and if there are any addons/plugins or extensions from Ad-Aware in Firefox, disable them also. Then see if that makes a difference with FF.

If you have Flash Player Installed in IE, do the same.

I want to eliminate Ad-Aware as a conflict.

Then in Firefox, do you have any extensions? If so what are they? What about Themes?

Do you have Silverlight in FF? RealPlayer? Quicktime?

Then let me know also on IE.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Ok, let's see.

I've got a cuple of plugins for firefox:

Adobe acrobat

Java deployment toolkit

Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U25

Shockwave flash

Silverlight plug-in

Windows live photo gallery

I even uninstalled Ad-aware and there was no add-on for firefox. When I  tested it on your test site: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

There does everything appear to be fine but then again it's when i want to watch filmclips on youtube when it's crashing. So it's still the same problem.

In IE it's exactly the same problem and I don't use IE so there are not any expansions or add-ons.

Thanks.

Hi, That info is helpful on FF. It was probably a good idea to remove Ad-Adware since you have MSE.

On Java, you can Disable the Java Deployment Toolkit plugin. I always keep mine Disabled, as it is not needed unless you are a Developer.

I would try Disabling Silverlight, as it is known to conflict with Firefox. No harm done if that doesn't correct the problem. You don't need to Remove it, just Disable it and anything that's in the FF browser.

Now, I think we need to see what Flash files are actually Installed.

Go to C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash   Open the Flash folder and let me know what files are listed there. I don't need any install logs. Just a list of what you see. The NPSWF32.dll file you will need to right click on and then click on Properties to obtain the version number.

Thanks,

eidnolb
