Flash Player Downloading, but can't see content.

Community Beginner ,
Apr 24, 2007 Apr 24, 2007
I have been trying to install Flash Player for three days now. I have gone through every support step that was listed and still I can't see any content. Started with the install, didn't work; next came the unistall and reinstall didn't work. Upgraded browser, didn't work. Checked IE settings, didn't work. Checked Admin access, didn't work. Look in registry (as per adobe support instructions), nothing wrong. I also have Norton Internet Utilities and I went into the firewall settings and allowed all active x and flash content, still nothing.

Please, please, please, help!

SubInACL worked great, but you need to follow through with all the steps Darren gives you to make sure that you are not running the fix without having the conditions. Kudos to Adobe for taking the time to call from CA to PA and fixing a Microsoft problem! If more companies support pages were like this, there would be a lot more happy users. Listen to what Darren has to say, he knows what he is talking about. Well, again, thank you to Adobe and happy flash design!!!

Ive been trying to get flash working for about 2 weeks now and Im so frustrated I dont know what to do anymore.. flash worked fine at one point and Im not sure what happened to make it stop. I see small pictures with a loading bar rotating around it usually and nothing ever shows up. Or nothing will show up. I have tried ALL steps seen in this forum. Including switching security settings, accepting all cookies, checking registry and using the sub tool from microsoft, uninstalling and reinstalling 10-20 times in different ways, disabling windows and norton firewalls, disabling pop-up blockers, enabling javascript etc.. Im completely lost.. I could really use the help and would greatly appreciate ANY suggestions. Thank you very much.

Is this Windows XP Home or Pro or Vista? Have you ever run any Window system registry cleaners?

Having no groups listed here: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT does indicate a serious system registry permission issue. I would be happy to help you with this. I sent you a private message please respond to my email and I will try to help you fix this issue.

I have XP Pro. To my knowledge I have never run any registry cleaners.

I do run spybot, ad-aware, and Norton on pretty regular basis.

Hi s83982c,

Thanks for taking the time to work with me on this issue. I am happy we were able to resolve it.

This was a Windows System Registry Issue. Incorrect permissions prevented the Flash Player installation. This is not caused by Flash Player but it will prevent it’s installation.

This was resolved using a tool called SubInACL built by Microsoft to correct system registry permission issues.

What to look for:

1. If you install Flash Player on IE and are unable to see Flash content on any webpage
2. After installation C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash will have flash 9c.ocx in it but it failed to register
3. It appears that Flash Player installed correctly, but unable to view Flash content
4. Flash Player works on other browsers, but NOT Internet Explorer
5. If you are missing groups in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Advanced Permissions
6. If you have run registry cleaners in the past, this may have corrupted your system

Warning: The following solution involves the Windows System Registry. Editing or manipulating the registry incorrectly can result in serious system damage which may require re-installation of the operating system. If you are not comfortable editing the registry, then take your system to a professional. If you choose to proceed, then it is essential that you create a complete system backup and a Windows System Restore Point before proceeding. Adobe Systems cannot be held responsible for damage resulting from this information.

1. Select Start > Run
2. Type in “regedit”
3. Right click on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. Select Permissions
5. Select Advanced

For Vista

Compare your permissions with the ones in this screenshot.

http://www.supportflash.com/vista_key.png

For Window XP Pro

Compare your permissions with the ones in this document (scroll down to the bottom of page).

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=kb400116

Notice and major differences, missing groups, incorrect permissions?

How can you repair the System Registry, what's the fix

Download SubInACL from Microsoft to fix permission issues that prevent the Flash Player Installation.

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=fb1634cb

If you have a Windows System Registry permission issue that sounds like the one described above, SubINACL may be the solution.

“Also, for Windows Internet Explorer please check to be sure that the Shockwave Flash Object under Tools, Manage Add-ons is enabled.”

I had it before but had trouble installing it then. I was able to download it from a trouble shooting link. However that forum no longer exist so though I try to install version 9, the movie that should appear doesn't and so it doesn't completly install and I can no longer view some things.

Can you help me? I have Windows XP, using IE 7.0

Hi Darren

I am having the same problem, as the others, with Flash Player.

I have tried the first steps of your advice (exactly as you wrote) but it was unsuccessful.

Then I tried your second advice, the one that involves the "regedit" but at the end of the final step (5- select advanced) I did not know what else to do.

This problem is driving me crazy! I have been trying to fix it for about 2 weeks! Every time I use the internet I am unable to see images and videos. Or even to play games! Please, help me!

My windows is Microsoft Windows XP, Media Centre Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2.

If you need, my email is: para_sabine@hotmail.com

Thank you for your attention.

Penno,

Did you try to run the Flashrepair after you installed the Flash the first time? I also got that same message after I Uninstalled Flash from all profiles. I then did a clean install, after turning off all other running software., antivirus, yahoo messenger etc, I then ran the Flashrepair and it was then working nicely on all other profiles. The first time I tried I got the same error but I would have expected that error since I had just unistalled Flash Player.

Basicly here are the steps that I did:

Use the Flash Uninstaller from Adobe on all profiles.
I then closed all other profiles.
I exited all other running software ie antivirus, yahoo, etc
I then installed the Flash Player form Adobe website.
Next I ran the FlashRepair.
I then logged off that profile and tryed the one that was giving me problems and it was now working.

I am running XP Home.

I do not know much else about the flash player or the repair utility, Darren or Jean-Marc would need to help with that. I wish you luck.

Like so many others, I have been trying for days to install the Flash Player. There are some great suggestions here and I have tried every one without success. Darren, you seem to be the wizard at fixing this so any help would be greatly appreciated!

- I have Windows XP Home and IE 6; have administrator access; security set to Medium
- It looks like it's downloading but I never get the final "complete" video; just a " mark
- Didn't see any permissions in the registry
- Tried SubInACL but got an error message that it didn't recognize the commands
- Have tried the uninstall/install and making sure the folder was empty

I would really appreciate any suggestions! thanks

I am trying to distill the suggestions from this thread, but have not managed resolution. I also have uninstalled and installed FP 9 (with the uninstaller), but cannot open .swf files. And I cannot find Flash Player listed in Programs, even though it indicated the installation was successful. I'm running XP Home, so tried to follow your instructions to edit the registry; regedit, rt. click on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, but I can find no "Permissions" to select, nor "Advanced. It is my understanding that the MS tool SubInACL is not for XP Home? Hope you can help.

Hi kemajic,

Flash Player is installed as either an ActiveX for Internet Explorer or a browser plug-in for other browsers.

If you want to view a SWF file you can open it in a browser window. Select the SWF and choose File Open In and select the browser.

You will not find Flash Player in your Windows Programs folder

The location for the ActiveX file or the plug-in on Windows XP is here: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash

The latest version of Flash Player would be listed as ‘Flash9f.ocx’ for IE and for the Plug-In it is called NPSWF32.dll.

I don’t think that you need to be in your system registry unless you feel that you have permission issues on your machine. But to answer your question, you would RIGHT click on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and select permissions. It doesn’t sound like you need to be in the registry if you are just trying to playback a SWF file.

I hope this helps.

I see alot of others having the same problem..tried the "trouble shooting stuff" from Adobe and I already had those settings so that's not the issue....  Any help out thre?

I cannot install Flash 9. From reading the various posts I believe I have the same registry permissions problem as so many others have noted. How it got that way I have no idea. Also I have not experienced any other problems other than installing Flash. I have Windows XP SP1 and I have no groups listed under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. If I download and run this SubinACL tool from Microsoft will it screw anything else up since I've never updated my XP with SP2. Why is not having any groups listed in the advanced permissions a serious problem, other than preventing Flash from installing? My fear in trying to correct this I will create scores of other problems. Can making these changes to my registry, assuming done correctly , cause other problems? I will pose this same question to Microsoft as well. Any insight is appreciated.

I have Vista and I have un-installed & re-installed so many times it is ridiculous. I am certain my students will have like problems. I attempted the registry solution (regedit) and this is where there are no directions as per the 4/24 post. I am very aggravated and would like this issue put to bed. I have been attempting, re-attempting since school was out in June and keep thinking I over-looked something and at this point need some serious help.
