Dear Sunil,

I have previously carried out a clean install twice before posting this discussion. And have just gone through the process again using your links. Then went back to http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html and the box is still blank dispite flash player now being in my system preferences once again.

Sincerely David

I've just been into Safari - Preferences - Security - Enable plug-ins (set to disable) Enabling = Problem Solved

Sorry for taking up your time,

I'm with safari as my browser. No desire to change. This problem started after i cleared out my cookies. All 1700+ of them. But i've been through the adobe installation process since and the fault find process, but still no flash player. Not the end of the world just a bit rubish.

Also a couple of query points:

-At the trouble shooting stage i'm pointed to a box that will show adobe version and system if flash player is installed. And error if it is not. What is happening if the third option of a blank box occurs?

-Near the end of the install process i'm told to restart any browsers that i wish to use flash player on. This message come immediately after the flash player installation has force quit on my browser, so the browser is not open to restart. Does it mean i should start my browser, or possibly start my browser and close my browser, or maybe even start my browser then restart my browser? I have tried it every which way but would still dearly like to know what it's on about.

Are you referring to this page? http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html

Can you see a rolling ball there in the first step? If Flash Player is not installed, you either see an error message stating that or a blank box.

For the second question: You can re-open the browser.

Thank you Sunil,

So flash player is not installed, dispite it's logo being in my System Preferences and having installed flash player correctly. I'm going to ask where's my error message?

This would seem to be a problem with my safari set up then. Any ideas as to how to set safari to allow Flash Player to work once installed?

I suggest you to have a clean installation of Flash Player.

- Uninstall Flash Player. Instructions are provided in this link: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/928315

I am having this exact problem. The test page is either blank or reports that the plug-in is missing. I have uninstalled, restarted, and reinstalled FP multiple times and have reinstalled Safari 2x. I have tried downgrading to FP10. In all cases the FP installation software reports success but problems persist across both Safari and Firefox. Firefox is uniformly dead to FP and either shows a black box or reports that the plug-in has crashed.

On a suggestion from elsewhere, I removed all add-ons from Safari (e.g. Readablility and Evernote buttons) and trashed various Library files related to those add-ons. The sole difference now is that using Safari for YouTube mostly (not entirely) works, and on some embedded video on some sites I can see and hear video—but not necessarily all video on the same page at any one site. This is really frustrating.

italtrav,

Do you notice any difference if you disable hardware acceleration?

How do I disable or enable hardware acceleration?

That is hard to do on the mac version. Your simple guide certainly doesn't show how i can do that. The setting option on the right click is greyed out and unresponsive.

I have finally managed to get Flash working.

1) The first step was to start up in Safe Boot mode [hold down Shift key during start-up;  you'll see Safe Mode at the account login screen].

2) I uninstalled and then reinstalled FP 11, which immediately showed up as loaded on the Mac test page: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-mac.html

3) On a full restart, I again had no Flash. Figuring that something else was preventing it from loading, I disabled most everything that puts an icon up on my menu bar. Right at the moment, I sort of suspect the Evergreen, but that would need further testing.

It's possible that I had, in fact, successfully installed FP earlier, but that some conflict was keeping it from loading. So it would be worthwhile to start up in Safe Mode and check whether FP is running even before trying the uninstall/reinstall. There are days I miss the pre-OSX systems, where you could easily disable extensions for this kind of check.

Hope this helps you.

One last thing.

I found on Evernote's site this announcement, "Safari has significantly changed the way it supports browser plugins, making the Evernote Safari Web Clipper plugin incompatible with this browser update. We're hard at work building a brand new Evernote Web Extension for Safari 5.1, which will have some cool clipping features, but it's not quite ready. It will be available in the next few weeks."

Dela_Boy,

Try scrolling down on the page referenced in the FAQ and right clicking on the Flash content displayed in the "Find Flash Player version type and capabilities (Flash developers only)" section.  The other flash content on this page (which has been revised since I created the FAQ) is too small to allow the "settings" menu item to be enabled.

Like Dela_Boy says, this doesn't seem to match up with the Mac page that comes up for me. Is there some other way to adjust hardware acceleration?

But as I also reported above, according to the FP Version page, it's not installed—all I see is a blank area. Multiple reinstalls (all of which report success) have done no good at all. I have no anti-virus SW running. And FWIW, I've also downloaded and separately reinstalled Java. Some videos on some pages I can play, some not. On YouTube, I can play maybe 60% of them. On other pages, I might be able to play one embedded video but then not another on the same page.

More info:

I think I have determined that the videos I can play are not, in fact, Flash, but HTML 5. So what is likely the case is that I simply cannot install FP and have no idea what is preventing that (nor why the installation software reports a successful install).
