Flash Player not playing .swf files offline

I downloaded a couple of videos (.swf) to play when offline.
When I went to play them, WIndows wanted to know what program to use - I, of course, selected Internet Explorer.
I checked to see if I had Flash Player installed and determined that Flash Player 11.8 was enabled.
I even reinstalled the Flash Player to ensure it was installed thoroughly.
When I attempted to run the .swf files in Internet Explorer (v10.09), I was presented with a blank IE page except for a very small black icon located in the top l/h corner.
This icon was either a small, black circle with a black diagonal line through it (when ActiveX Filtering activated) or a small, black square/t.v. icon (with ActiveX Filtering disabled).
No matter what I attempted I could not play any .swf file when offline.
I dont seem to have any problem playing videos (i.e., YouTube) when online.
Can anyone offer any suggestions, workarounds, etc ( in layman terms!)
Thanks in advance.

You need the standalone Flash Player, and unfortunately, I don't have the link handy.
Pat Willener does have it and he'll likely be here in the forums in a few hours. I'll PM him and have him post the link when he logs on.

You can download the standalone player (Projector) from http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
Note that the download is the player, not an installer. Move the downloaded file (flashplayer_11_sa.exe) to a convenient folder (e.g. C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash), then make the file association to .swf files manually.
If you need help with the file association see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/choose-programs-windows-uses-default
