I have tried to download flashplayer and it fails. I have followed the steps for trouble shooting on Adobe but no luck. I have PC Defender (F-Secure) as my antivirus and firewall. Any suggestions?

Hi Eidnolb,
Thanks for staying with me on this.
In answer to your questions:
1. I had done the clock test successfully. Sorry that I failed to mention that to you earlier.
2. Right now, the add/remove has: Adobe Acrobat 5.0, Adobe Reader 8.1.2, Adobe AIR (?) and Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX. There is no DLM listed.
3. The other curious thing I noticed is that when I went to the following site to check what may be there,
http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about
It displayed that I had the Adobe Flashplayer installed successfully with the version 10,0,42,34.
When I then checked the Tools>Manage Add ons, it still listed "Shockwave Flash object" version 8.0.22.0, created on 11/2/2009, 4:24PM with file name listed as Flash10d.ocx and showing that it had been accessed just a minute earlier. (the file Flash10d.ocx was created on 11/2/2009, 4:24 PM.)
But, then I went to open a “ .mht” file, it still gave the message “It looks like you don’t have Flash. Click below to get it”
So, it looks like I have the Adobe Flashplayer installed, but it is not being recognized correctly.

Thanks for checking all of that akt. It seems that the two main issues here is that 1. FlashUtil10d.exe is not installed in the Flash folder. 2. The Shockwave Flash Object is reflecting Flash10d.ocx correctly, but showing the version as 8.0.22.0.
I know in a previous post you said you made a new file for the FlashUtil??.exe, was it 10c.exe?; because you couldn't delete it? Going by memory so I may not be recalling that correctly.
In my Flash folder for FlashUtil I can copy and place it in another folder if I like. I can also click "run".
I need to read an Adobe article to refresh my remembrance of this. I am almost sure that when FP is installed, Adobe places this FlashUtil??.exe in the Flash folder and it calls the Shockwave Flash Object in add ons when needed. Like when you go to a website that calls for "FP". Also this Util may very well update the ActiveX Control(from 8.0.22.0 to 10.0.42.34)
Will post back when I have this info. If I am on the wrong track here perhaps someone will explain it. I am just making an educated guess, so until I can verify my "guess" don't do anything further. Normally all of this technical stuff is handled by Adobe and I have never bothered to try to figure it out until now.
Thanks
The website is calling for something that is not installed correctly in your system and whether this guess of mine is it, I'll know soon.

Hi Eidnolb,
Thanks again for checking various articles.
If I have misled you, I am sorry. However, the first issue raised by you is not correct. Both the files FlashUtil10d.exe and Flash10d.ocx are in the Flash folder. Both have the same date / time of modification (11/2/2009). The second issue statement by you is correct.
After I could not delete FlashUtil10c.exe, I was able to move it out of the Macromed folder to a temporary file location. As far as I know, it is not on the computer any more (just did a search for it to confirm that).
Will look forward to your next posting.

Oh, thanks akt for clearing that up. My mistake, I should have opened another window and checked your info. I normally do, especially when we have several posters on one thread. Well I am glad to hear that. So that leaves us with the ActiveX vs 8.0.22.0, identified as 10.0.42.34.
I did not find in my research anything to confirm my guess; what I did find is that FlashUtil10d.exe is needed by third party software(of Adobe's I'm assuming) and it is also the Updater notification Utility that Adobe uses. That it is an Update utility I know for a fact, since that is how I'm notified that a FP update is available and it updated with no problem and it removed the old version of everything in my Flash folder. The only problem I had was I was getting a message from youtube and a chat service that I needed to update my FP. LOL After doing considerable research I found that the Shockwave Flash Object ActiveX was still reflecting the old version. Since I am able to hi-lite it and click on "Update ActiveX" it did and then I had no more problem. Why IE8 doesn't allow that I don't know.
Since we know that the registry is used with the Installation of FP and this old vs 8.0.22.0 was also, I am going to suggest that you run Microsoft's free PC Safety Scan. I used it this past week and was very well pleased. It has 3 scans that you can choose. The one that includes the Registry Cleaner is the "Clean Up" Scan. Only run that one now. The Protection scan is very long. The Clean Up and Tune Up are much shorter.
I have never used any Registry Cleaner on my PC because I read they may do more harm than good & even Adobe cautions about causing problems with Flash. And goodness knows we have enough of that:-) However, I trust Microsoft, it is simple as that with me.
Check the Safety Scan out. I think this may be the answer in getting rid of that old version.
Thanks

Hi Eidnolb,
Thanks for your suggestion on doing a Cleanup Scan. Just did it. It did do some registry cleaning, which should help my computer.
Unfortunately, it did not fix the problem with the Flashplayer installation not being recognized, when I try to open the .mht files. (even though the Adobe web site says that the Adobe Flashplayer has been installed successfully with the version 10,0,42,34, whenever I go to that web site)
If you can think of something else I should try, please let me know.
Thanks again for all your time and effort in helping me to fix the problem.

Hi akt, glad you did the scan. It is supposed to clean and remove old registry files, so since the 8.0.22.0 is old I am hoping it cleared that registry. It would not uninstall the old activex however, but perhaps clear the path so the Adobe Uninstaller could and the Adobe Install would install the FlashUtil10d.exe and the proper Shockwave Flash ActiveX.
What are .mht files? Have you any trouble with youtube? Or any other sites that use Flash Player? What about Yahoo?
CNN, etc?
Thanks

Hi Eidnolb,
I did go through the process of using Adobe Uninstaller and then Installer for Flashplayer after the “cleaning and removing of the registry files”. However, nothing seems to be different from the way things were before that.
At this time, I don’t seem to have any problem with any web sites (such as youtube, cnn) which show movie clips.
From what I understand mht files are files created by Internet Explorer, which provide you a useful option to save Web pages including graphics, css, javascript and other embedded components as a Web archive single file. I happened to receive these as attachment to an e-mail and have been interested in looking at them. Unfortunately, whenever I try to open these using Internet Explorer, it keeps telling me that I need to install Flashplayer, when it is already installed.
Will look forward to any other ideas you or anyone else may have to fix this problem.
Thanks again for all the time and effort, which you have spent in helping me.

Hi akt, Well it appears you did everything you could. If you don't have any problem with viewing except the .mht files
then perhaps when FP vs 10.1.51.45 which is in Beta now, comes out it will get rid of the vs 8.
Here is some info that you can explore. Be sure to look at the bottom right of the opening page for "Related Web Searches". Hope you find the info. Perhaps it is Java/Java Script related? I'm sure you will figure it out.
Thanks for cooperating.
The only thing I'll add is that I had read that some of these older versions of FP, especially vs8 was something to do with the code and it was "locked". Now I have no understanding of programming, developing, etc. I just remember reading that. Well, this vs 8 certainly seems locked:-)
Link: http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?form=MSHOME&mkt=en-US&setlang=en-US&q=mht+files
Of course if I find a solution to the vs 8, you'll receive a post.
Thank you

Flash object 9.0.124.0 in my add-ons

Ok, those entries in the Flash folder are exactly what you need. Yes, we are almost done. We have got to remove the
9.0.124.0 out of the IE add ons and install the 10.0.42.34 and then we should be done. Not very simple is it? 🙂
In IE6, which I use, I can simple remove it. I don't think you can in IE8 so we are going to have to do it the hard way.LOL
Go to this link: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html
After you open the page, I want you to look for item #3 Don't do anything yet, Open Tools, then Internet Options, click and open the tab at the top that says Security, make sure you have it on the medium default level. I think you said you did change it. I just want you to be sure. If you have never set your security with Custom , then page down until you see
"if the activex control.......Download the one for Internet Explorer and put it on your desktop. Now I would keep ALL add ons in IE DISABLED so nothing interferes with this install. Now close all browsers and run the install from your desktop
and be sure to Reboot TWICE. I know it is a pain in the neck, but we want to be sure the vs 9 is removed.

I had someone else a few months ago that had a problem with an old ActiveX in add ons. Let me check and see how that was handled and I'll get back to you. It can be aggravating.
I assume your security settings were all ok. If not let me know.
Another thing, did you tell me what Anti-virus/spyware you are using and do you use a Firewall other than Windows?
Thanks

Hi chipanna, I reviewed your information and have a question and a couple of comments.
Question: How did Shockwave Flash Object ActiveX Flash9b.ocx version 9.0.124.0 as you indicate get in the IE add ons?
When did you install Flash Player version 9.0.124.0?
Now we ran the Uninstaller and Installed FP vs. 10.0.42.34 on Sunday 12/20/09 and now you find 3 entries of version 7 in the Macromed Flash folder and I had you remove them.
Something is not making sense. Also, you say you are a rookie, but yet you have the latest version of Shockwave Flash
Player installed and also Adobe Air. Do you use these programs and have need of them?
Today we ran the ActiveX installer and that did not work because something is preventing the install.
Do you have Toolbars installed? If so I need to know which ones they are.
I think you need to review the troubleshooting page regarding the security settings and make sure you understand them
and if you don't, let me know. http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html
Things that should be working are not and I need information from you in order to understand what they are.

I dont remember when I installed FlashPlayer 9, whwen they
told me to, I guess.
I dont use Adobe AIR sos I have deleted it, and I don,t use Adobe Reader so eliminated that also. I do need the Shockwave program though.
I have deleted the old "7" files.
As for toolbars, apart from the usual I have McAfee site advisor and the Accuweather toolbars.
I do not know how the Add-on "9" got there.
Anything else you need to know?

Hi chipanna, thank you for letting me know that. The 9 activex was installed when you installed FP9, so that makes sense.
What has me puzzled it that you have the FP10.0.42.34 installed and you went to the Adobe site and they said so too, so
why the 9 activex wasn't removed when you uninstalled and the new FP was installed. That is what we are trying to work out.
Glad you removed the old 7 files. Good job.
Now on the McAfee and accu weather toolbars, do you remember if you disabled them when you uninstalled? Any toolbar will affect your browser, not sure yet, but they may have prevented the old activex being removed.
Let me know that please.
Thanks, hope we can get this taken care of. I have a few errands to run this evening, but will check back on you.

Hi, I'm back. Ok, I thought you said you had disabled them, just wanted to be sure. Trying to rule everything out.
Are most of the websites you go to working? Are there any that are not working?
Is youtube working for you?
In your add ons, does it say Shockwave Flash Object ActiveX Flash9b.ocx?
I don't know if with IE8 you can do this, but go to Tools, Internet Options, click on the General Tab, click on Settings,
then click on View Objects. Maximize this window, look for Shockwave Flash Object and under Version, write the number down and let me know what it is. Now, right click on Shockwave Flash Object, does a small window open that says
Update, Remove, Properties? If it does, click on Update and write down the new version.
chipanna, if you can't do that don't worry about it. IE8 may not have that feature.
Thanks

Hi chipanna, Ok, good job.
Now, I just have a couple of questions to make sure of what you just posted.
Questions #1. When you went to Settings and View Objects, are you saying the version was 10.0.42.34?
Your answer Yes or No to #1
Questions #2. In your add ons you have Shockwave Flash Object version 10.0.42.34 listed?
Your answer Yes or No to #2.
Just some info for you, the other listing in add ons , the 11.5.2.6 is for your Shockwave Player, NOT Flash Player.
chipanna, If your answer to my question #1 and #2 is Yes, then you are done!!!
Post back.
