How do I install Flash Player 9?

I recently downloaded and installed the newer Flash Player, 10.2.  Only - it turns out, that does NOT work with a website that I use a lot, and want to continue to use - that website needs me to have Flash Player 9, which apparently I did have before.  As you've no doubt guessed - I am NOT a programmer or de-bugger!!!

I've un-installed the Flash Player 10.2, and downloaded and saved a huge zip file - fp9_archive.zip - that appears to have some 17 different versions of Flash Player 9 - but I do not know how to install one.  Any help? - I cannot see any instrux in the accompanying Readme.txt file, or on the Adobe website.

I am using Windows XP, SP3 - 32 bit.

I am using Windows Explorer 8, 32 bit.

Thank you if you can help - I do appreciate it.

Hi, Do you think the website is saying "at least version 9" instead of just version 9?

The version 9.0.280 and higher is only 21.8 MB zipfile. I would think that would be better to use and extract the file you need.

Find the file you need by referring to the readme.txt file. You have to right click on the zipfile and open it first.

Look for and extract: Internet Explorer flashplayer9r280_winax.exe and put it on your Desktop.  (1.46 MB)

Just so you know you will lose all Security by Installing that old of the version. Adobe stopped supporting this version some time ago. I've not heard of any website only using that version, so that's sort of out of the ordinary.

Thank you, eidnolb - very prompt and helpful response.

You can see for yourself what I'm talking about - go to www.fidelity.com and

click Research near top middle, and then Mutual Funds. (You don't need a

Fidelity ID to do this.)

You will then see a display about a Fund Evaluator, and it says that it

'requires Flash Player 9.' I did not formerly get this display - I used to

go straight into the Fund Evaluator. Then, when I downloaded and installed

Flash Player 10.2 - I started seeing this display. So - it seems that it

does specifically need that version, and will not work with later versions.

Thank you again - I will try what you suggested - much appreciated.

Hi, thanks. Let me check that site. I'm quite surprised. I would think the most Secure version of Flash Player would be what a user would want when visiting that kind of a site.

I know someone that uses them, so if you haven't already Installed vs 9 I can check on that. I'll check the site myself but the person I know won't be able to give me feedback until tomorrow sometime.

Hi, I followed your instructions but didn't see "Evaluator" but did see "Pre-defined Evaluator" and clicked on that and a lot of info came up. But nowhere on any of the pages did I even see Flash Player mentioned at all.

I have FP 10.2.153.1 Installed.

What version do you have Installed now?

Check here: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Thanks,

I have NO idea what's going on at this point. I did what you said, and I

went to the web page which is supposed to show what version of Flash Player

I have installed - and it doesn't show me anything.

At the same time - websites that used to give me a drop-down that I needed

an updated Flash Player to see them correctly - do NOT show any such message

anymore.

In short - I have no idea what version of Flash Player I'm running now - if

any!

I searched my C: drive for all applications w/ 'flashpl' in the name - and

it returned ONLY the ones that I knew about, from the Version 9 downloads I

did.

So - I have no idea what's installed, what's running, or how it got that

way. I don't know if it will work, but I've tried to include a screen print

below, of the screen that I get on the Fidelity website I want - I did NOT

formerly get this, before I downloaded and installed Version 10.2.

Hi, Ok just take a deep breath! We'll figure this out:-)

Go to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash  Right click on Flash and post back all files listed there.

Then using IE, go to Tools, Manage addons and under "Show"(very light text) look in All addons or Run without Permission.

Is Shockwave Flash Object Installed & Enabled? If so what version is listed?

The Screenshot did not come thru but I don't think I need it, since I know what the problem is.

Thanks,

Thanks again, eidnolb - and we're good now!!!

Short answer, as you seem to have figured out - I had not enabled Flash

Player ON THE FIDELITY SITE.

I HAD enabled it on some other sites, and that's why I did not see their

pop-up messages anymore. I never noticed the enabling switch / banner at

the top of the screen - I was just so startled to see a strange screen on

the familiar Fidelity site, I stopped thinking and started over-reacting.

Anyway - I downloaded and installed version 10.2 again, and everything looks

fine. It shows on IE, enabled, version 10.2.153.1. It is enabled by

website, and I have enabled it on the Fidelity website now, and their screen

comes up as I expect it.

The files listed in that directory are:

Flash10o.ocx

FlashInstall.txt

FlashUtil10o_ActiveX (app)

FlashUtil10o_ActiveX.dll

install.txt

And yes, I deleted all those Version 9 files.

So - as far as I can tell, I'm good now. You were right - Fidelity wanted

Version 9 or higher - NOT specifically Version 9.

Thank you again - I do appreciate your help, and your patience. And if I

can give you a little giggle - now you know why I call myself

Hi, I think there are a lot of casual users:-) I used to be one myself, but came to my senses quickly when no one was available to help LOL Ever since then I research until I find an answer and that answer has to make sense also. A lot of the "try this" out there. No thanks:-)

So you must use one of those "click for Flash" or similar? If so, isn't that a bother? Or in your case taxes your memory? Ha-Ha

Your Flash files are all correct by the way. And yes removing vs 9 files is a good idea. Aren't you glad you didn't Install that? You probably wouldn't have been able to see that site at all:-)

Well, worse things have happened dealing with computers. At least you were able to correct the issue, so that's good.

As for me, if you'd mark your thread as answered I'd appreciate that.

Thanks for the feedback. I was wondering why you were seeing something different than I was on the same site. Mystery solved!!

Thanks,

Sorry, eidnolb - REALLY silly question! I just spent a good 20 mins

looking - and I can't figure out how to mark the thread as answered! The

bottom of this e-mail suggests something about poss the Actions box on the

right - and all I see there is the option to view a print preview. Tell me

how, and I'll be happy to mark the thread as answered - sorry to be such a

PIA!

Hi, did you turn Flash on? ROFL  It is not a silly question, if so I have a sillier (is that a word?) answer; I don't know:-) Several people have asked me that. Since I don't see what you see from this side of the fence, I'll have to ask. The only way I know is I'm going to have to start a thread and have you answer it!! Then I'll find out how to mark it answered, LOL

Let me think.......Trying to think of a thread subject....Ha-Ha

I'll let you know what I find out. You would think I would know by now, but I don't.

Oh, I just noticed you said "the bottom of this email" Are you looking at your email notification that you receive from the Forum? If so, click on "visit the message page" and that brings you directly to your thread here on the Flash Player Forum.

Maybe that is the problem you're having?

Let me know, then maybe I won't have to start a thread:-)

Thanks,

Hi - yes, Flash is on, and yes, I can get to the message page - I just can't

figure out what to do when I get there! I looked thru the FAQ, did a search

for 'mark thread,' etc - no luck. Sorry - I just could not find an answer.

Thanks again,

Hi, That's ok, don't worry about it. If I ever find out, will let you know:-) The only thing some have told me is that marking it is on a message page that comes from me.

Anyway, glad you have your problem fixed

Thanks for trying:-)
