I'm getting Bad_Pool_Header when using adobe flash

Community Beginner ,
Dec 15, 2016 Dec 15, 2016

Yesterday I started randomly getting the blue screen of death, with the code Bad_Pool_Header X03. I continued to get them until I realized that they were only happening when I was going on websites with heavy adobe flash content. I uninstalled adobe flash and haven't had any problems since. Therefore, I figured it was a bug with the adobe flash 24 since it's updated literally minutes before all this happened. I went and installed an old version of adobe flash (23), but I still got the blue screen when going to any site with heavy flash content.

I just debugged my DMP file and found out that driver is from Nortan anti-virus, so reinstalled the program. Still got the same problem. Apparently Norton no longer likes adobe flash.

Hi,

Flash Player itself doesn't touch anything in the system that would result in a BSOD.  What could be happening is Flash Player is exacerbating something else in the system that then results in the crash.  The only way to know is to get the crash DMP file which will record what is actually causing the crash/BSOD.  However, before doing that, you should first ensure that all of your device drivers are up-to-date, as often times out-dated device drivers can result in the BSOD.  Performing an internet search of Bad_Pool_Header X03 will also give you some idea of what is causing the crash, and possibly solutions..  If that doesn't resolve the issue, provide the BSOD crash dump file and we can investigate further.

I have the error info which includes BCCode, BCP1, BCP2, etc. Is that what you need?

Sorry, I have no way of knowing if you are referring to the crash log file or something else with just that information.   Posting the entire contents of the error would give context to your post.  But again, since Flash Player itself doesn't cause the BSOD, it'd be best if you searched the internet for the crash info (example: Bad_Pool_Header. X03) That will give you insight into the cause of the crash.

I know it has something to do with adobe flash, since it only started after the new version 24 came out, and only happens when trying to load pages with swf files. I also no longer get the blue screens since I uninstalled Adobe Flash. Since it's a Bad Pool Header X03 I know it has to do with a driver. Could you tell me the drivers that are effected by Adobe flash so I could check them out and make sure they are working properly.

The same thing happens to us. Three different Windows 10 64-bit computers. It was working on Friday, Dec 16 on my daughter's laptop, but yesterday after logging in (login is not in Flash), her computer got a BSOD with BAD_POOL_HEADER as the error message. We then tried it on my wife's laptop and THAT crashed. Then we tried my Desktop gaming PC, and that also crashed. We tried Firefox, IE and Chrome, and all three crashed with the same error message. All are running Flash 24.0 r0.

My work laptop with Windows 7 64-bit running Flash 23.0 r0 does NOT crash.

It is really easy to test. Just go to http://animaljam.com/ and create a free account.

I nearly started a thread there first, but since it was only Flash that was causing a problem, and I didn't see anything there about it, I added on to this one first. Thanks for the update!

I would highly recommend that you reach out to Symantec support.  If their scanning engine is crashing and taking the system down when scanning files (it's reasonable to assume than an on-demand scan is triggered when you download or run our installer), that's very problematic, and something they'll want to investigate.

It's also possible that maybe your filesystem is corrupted, so that when it goes to read the file, it's blowing up in an ugly way.

You might run chkdsk first just to rule that out, but then I'd recommend to make sure you have any available updates for your antivirus software installed, and if the issue persists, reach out to their technical support.  The crash dumps will be very helpful.

Thanks!

This isn't during flash install. It is while a flash game is being loaded. I believe it has already downloaded, and is being processed by flash, as you can see some game assets and a loading bar before the BSOD.

This is happening on three different computers, all having the exact same issue. It is not a corrupt file. I ran 'sfc /scannow' and it reported "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

It is easy to check. Please try out the Animal Jam URL in my first reply.

You can upload complete DMP files to cloud.acrobat.com/send using the instructions at How to share a document and post the link your reply.  Include the following information as well with the file(s):

  • OS, including version
  • browser, including version
  • Flash Player version

The Flash content is still pulling in ancillary assets that the scanning engine is scanning.  This isn't going to be our bug.  We're happy to look at the dump and definitely confirm that, but my money is on the outcome that it's ultimately going to be a problem that Symantec needs to solve.

Adobe's US offices are closed for the holidays through Jan 4th, so that follow-up is probably going to be delayed.  This is a user-to-user forum, and we do have staff in other geographies, but the reason I'm mentioning it is that talking to your antivirus vendor's support channel is both the correct, and probably most expedient route given the timing.

I was running into this problem to since my daughter was experiencing bsod with the same error codes. We also have Norton running. But I didn't want to disable Norton every time my child wanted to play on the computer - even though that worked too.

It it turned out that there was a slew of updates last week. My husband was encountering a different problem with DirectX at the same time my daughter was having issues with flash. This was the only thread that google indicated for Animal Jam. But there was a ton more for the directX issue.

The work around for his issue for DX11 was to roll back the Nvidia driver to the 369.05 instead of the Dec 12 drop.  This ended up fixing the AJ issue as well without having to rollback flash or disabling Norton. It worked for me. Not sure if you wanted to try that route. It's worth a shot for me as I didn't want to disable AV.
