Hi eidnolb,

I would like to make sure I have the most current up-to-date versions of Adobe Flash Player, Shockwave, etc., along with Java. After doing some searches, I came across a previous forum of yours involving these issues. I feel that you could be able to help me out with some information. Overall, I would like to have the current programs/version, and be able to delete/uninstall any older ones that may not be necessary. I will provide you with as much info that you may need in order to begin helping me. Please let me know what other info you may require. I appreciate your assistance in this matter. Thanks! -B

I hope this information will be of some help. Again, my goal is to uninstall and reinstall Adobe and Java. I would like to only have 1 version (if possible), making sure it's the most current one, while deleting/uninstalling any previous versions or unnecessary files/add-ons. Basically, just trying to get the computer cleaned up and make web browsing more efficient (recently have had some difficulties displaying web pages using these programs). I am familiar with the programs and processes as a whole, but I believe you have more intellect and experience in the detailed areas. Thank you in advance for your time, and let me know if you need any other info. Thanks! -B

Hi, well I am finally getting caught up! I can see from my last post to you, I was in such a hurry that I should have used spell check:-)

Thanks on the Add/Remove info. I hardly ever go there unless I want to remove something.

So you did it all over again? LOL, well it paid off I see. That Java 2SSV; I just keep mine disabled. Interesting on the Deployment Toolkit. I have never had FF on my system, but this past week Java installed it into my add ons. So I disabled the auto download etc from Java

Hi, yes thanks for the info. You have the correct Flash Player files in the Flash folder. The Shockwave Flash Object is not and the Shockwave ActiveX(which is for the Shockwave Player)(not related to the Flash Object or Flash Player in any way) is not current. We can take care of that, no problem. The Shockwave Player is listed in your Add/Remove, we can update it after we finish with Flash Player. The Shockwave Flash Object, however will be taken care of with the Uninstall.

And it is this SWO(shorthand) that the NOTE specifically applies to.

Yes, we'll take care of the rest of this tomorrow, early afternoon if that is good. I'm going back to working on my computer:-) I Uninstalled a couple of anti-virus/spyware programs and changed to another one. The one was too much of a resource hog:-) Then I'm doing some program updates, etc. You know how it is, always updating.

Have a good evening, manana.

Hey eidnolb,

Ok, so everything looks good to begin the uninstall, correct? Just one thing. Do I need to disable the webroot, norton, etc. for the uninstall, or just the install? And, once I uninstall, I reboot, correct? (I'm sure the instructions will tell me; just want to dot the i's and cross the t's, so I don't mess anything up). And finally, upon reboot of the uninstall, do I then proceed with the Install, or do you need me to come back here and post any info you may need? Let me know. Thanks!

Hi, I'm a little late logging in today. Regarding your questions, I would just follow my directions which I'll list here.

Since you have the Unistaller and Installer on your Desktop, then just follow in the order below.

1. Disconnect from the Internet

2. Disable Norton, Webroot, Window Wash and the Norton Firewall

3. Close out all Browsers and check system tray that no applications that use Flash are running.

4. Click on the Uninstaller from your Desktop and click RUN, wait until it is finished and Reboot. Wait until your computer

is fully Rebooted(up and running) Keep browsers closed. Then Reboot again and when fully Rebooted, go to step 5

5. Click on the Installer from your Desktop and click RUN. Wait until finished, and Reboot ONCE.

6. Enable Norton, Webroot, Window Wash and the Norton Firewall

7. Connect back to the Internet.

Go to the Flash folder and confirm the files are 10.0.45.2

Go go Manage add ons, and find Shockwave Flash Object to confirm it is Flash10e.ocx and enabled.

Go here to test: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Then post back here that info.

Just take your time and you'll be fine:-)

However, while I was posting the above info, it seemed there were some things askew in regards to the dates and versions. Please review and let me know the next step. Thanks!

Hi, well you survived!!, no black and blue marks? 🙂 All your files in Flash folder are back in and correct. The dates are usually what Adobe assigns to them, not important for users. The version numbers are what is important.

The Shockwave Flash Object is still the old vs 9.0.16.0 and didn't get removed nor of course not updated. This had nothing to do with what you did or didn't do. I've seen this happen many times.

On your last post, I knew you didn't mean me, no problem:-)

You might want to check in Add/Remove for Shockwave Player and post back the version number.

I'll see how we can remove the old SWO and get back to you.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Whew! Good to know all is well,...so far

I checked add/remove and it has the Shockwave Player as version 11. Also, i was curious,...do the add-ons need to be in a certain category, or as long as they are listed under All Add-ons & Enabled, everything should be fine? I'll await your reply. Let me know if you need any more info. Thanks!

Hi again, ok, vs 11 for Shockwave Player. I'm not sure how the add ons are place, whether first installed or alpha. That they are there and enabled or disabled and are the correct versions is what is important. In IE6, they are listed as "currently loaded"(which I have no idea what that means) and "have been used"(which still doesn't make any sense). Having said that those are the only 2 places they are listed. In IE7 & 8 they have several different categories and list the same add on in these places, so it is confusing. I see no purpose for it, just makes it more difficult to find, in my opinion.

This is a test site for Shockwave Player, see what it says:

Hey eidnolb,

Thanks for the info. It is confusing in regards to if add-ons should be in a certain category or not. However, like you said, as long as they are Enabled, I see no concerns. I'm thinking that if one were to check their add-ons while on a certain web page, the add-ons will jump to a different category (hence, currently loaded, etc.) Dunno, just a thought.

Anyways, I clicked the Shockwave link, and this is what came up. It said "if it's installed correctly, then you should see the animation, etc.", which I did. It gave the version underneath that which stated: 11.0.3r470.

I hope this helps. Let me know what's next. Thanks!

Hi, glad you checked that and it's working ok, good. I've been doing some checking around Microsoft and even tho you

are using XP/SP3 and not Win7 which this applies to, you do use IE8, which Win7 does also. This info is about removing and or deleting ActiveX Controls. And since we are talking about IE8, perhaps this will work for you. Link follows:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Internet-Explorer-add-ons-frequently-asked-questions

The part to see if you can use is "Can I delete Add-ons or ActiveX Controls?" See if you can follow that and perhaps be able to remove the Shockwave Flash Object vs 9.0.16.0.

The rest of the FAQ's are informative as well.

This SWO being an old version is probably what has been causing some issues on the websites. They are looking for vs

10.0.45.2:-)

Thanks,

eidnolb

So it appears it's up to date. However, I have a question. I noticed in the Macromed folder that there is a folder titled Shockwave 10. Within that are a handful of files, and I noticed the version number being 10.3.0.24. Is that supposed to be there? Is that dealing with the ActiveX Control? I guess I'm confused as to the versions of the Shockwave ActiveX Control, the Shockwave Flash Object, and the Shockwave Flash Player; do they all have different version numbers?

Also, upon removing the old Shockwave Flash Object, via your link, I rebooted. I opened my browser to my homepage of Yahoo! and received the pop-up bar on top stating:

"This website wants to run the following add-on: 'Adobe Flash Player' from 'Adobe Systems Inc.' If you trust the website and the add-on and want to allow it to run, click here..."

I'm familiar with that, but I didn't click it, for fear of messing anything up that we may have just done. Instead, I came straight here and posted my results. Please inform me of the next steps. Should I go ahead and click the add-on? Do I need to update Shockwave per Bob's instructions? Let me know. I think we're on the brink of concluding this Talk to ya soon. Thanks!

Hi, well, good job!!! Nice to see the correct SWO in the add ons. You are right, don't click on anything at Yahoo, or any other site that tells you to update Flash Player. Just assume they have the problem, since we know your FP files and SWO are correct:-)

If you have a FOLDER, not a file that says Shockwave ActiveX Control vs 10.3.0.24 it is not Flash Player related.

I am not sure what that is for sure. My thot is that is a left over ActiveX from a previous Shockwave Player. You just checked the Shockwave Player and that version you now have is 11 something. I would have to see what is in your Add/Remove of Shockwave Player, to see if you have more than one entry. Do check this first and post back.

Then we'll do what Bob has posted.

Shockwave Player & Shockwave ActiveX Control is one thing. Flash Player & Shockwave Flash Object are the other.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Hi eidnolb,

I checked my add/remove and everything is the same as before. Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX v10.0.45.2 & Adobe Shockwave Player 11. Also here is a pic of that folder I mentioned:

image002.jpg

Should I delete this folder, or just leave it? Also, do I have to uninstall and re-install Flash because I deleted the Flash Object? Anyways, I hope this helps. Let me know what's next. Thanks!

Hey eidnolb,

I think I just answered my own question. I don't need to redo the flash because my Flash Player is v10.0.45.2 and my Shockwave Flash Object is v10.0.45.2, so those should be fine as is and we have nothing more to do with them, correct?

So just so I understand, I currently have Shockwave Player 11 v11.0.3r470 and Shockwave ActiveX Control v10.3.0.24, and those are what we are currently going to update next to v11.5.6r606, correct?

One more thing, with the info you sent regarding how to delete/remove add-ons, should I go back and remove the Java(TM) Plug-In 2SSV Helper & Deployment Tool Kit? (They are both currently disabled, so wasn't sure if I need to do that or not; and if so, should I do that now, or wait until we are done with the Shockwave Player)?

Thanks!

Hi, the screenshot was not clear enough for me to read. You won't uninstall FP. On the 2 Java entries, just leave them

disabled.

Since I could not read the screenshot, just tell me if there are more than one Shockwave Player versions listed in Add/Remove.

Go to this troubleshooting link: http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_tn_19166_en-us Under Section 5, look for "If the ActiveX

Control....and follow those instructions. You will need to disable all you did for the Uninstall.

We want to get the SWO installed, the Shockwave Player can be done after that.

Thanks,

Hey eidnolb,

There is only the one version of Shockwave Player in add/remove, v11.

I went to the link you provided and attemped to download to my desktop, but it said I already have the file. It's the one I downloaded before. Do I overwrite it with this one, or are they one-in-the-same? Also, didn't we already do this? I'm a little confused.

Hi, Ok on the Shockwave Player. Then you can follow Bob's update info on that.

On the ActiveX Control, I didn't read nor understand this to mean the files themselves. I knew they were installed, it was the ActiveX Control, SWO that is needed. I suppose it could be read, if you are having a problem installing FP from the Adobe site, then use this. Perhaps that is what it means. Since you got that message, then that must be what it means.

In other words if this don't work, try this. Just skip that, you don't need it, since you have the correct files.

In your manage add ons, what is listed for SWO now?

Thanks,

eidnolb

I hope I am not confusing you too much when I chime in here from time to time, as Blue (eidnolb) is handling this beautifully.

From the screenshot that you posted earlier, it appears as if you still have an old version 10.3 of Shockwave Player, that somehow did not get uninstalled. In that folder

C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Shockwave 10

can you run that UNWISE uninstaller?  This should remove that old version.

When you later update to the latest version of Shockwave Player 11, this will get installed/updated into this folder

C:\Windows\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11

Thanks Bob! Other than tripping over myself above. My Internet connection went down, knocked my printer and everything else offline So I am just getting back on.

I knew that was probably the ActiveX for an old Shockwave Player, but thot the SP would be in the add/remove.

Glad to have you chime in  Too many ActiveX's:-)

So we get a new folder each time we update SP? Well, then, oh never mind I don't think I want to know. LOL

Ok, bsinatra24, the above was to Bob:-)

See you tomorrow:-)

Only major versions, i.e. Shockwave 10 to Shockwave 11.  But the old version folder should have automatically been uninstalled.  Don't know why it didn't this time; maybe SP was in use?

Hey Bob, thanks for the input! I'm pretty sure it was shut down, but not positive. Anyways, I figure it's not hurting anything at the moment, so I'm just gonna leave it. If anything screwy starts happening, I know where to find you. Again, Thanks for all your help and talk to ya later. Take care!

I think I covered everything.

Hey Bob, I did as you suggested and ran UNWISE to uninstall. It worked, but there are still files there. I ran it before I updated the Shockwave Player, which also worked, but it did not create a folder where the old one is. Don't know if it matters, since everything's installed and working with the current versions. Just curious.

Hey Blue, I noticed that when I go into Add/Remove and you click on a program's info, there's a link to their update website. Is it ok to update manually via that for future updates? Again, just curious.

Thank you both so much for your time and patience!!! Please review the above and let me know what your conclusions are, and if you need any more info, and if there is still anything left to do. Thanks!

Hi, well look at all of the progress you have made  I am going to let Bob address the Shockwave Player files/folders, as

I do not have that installed and am not familiar with it as far as how it installs. I think the UNWISE Uninstaller? has a curious name:-)

On the Add/Remove update feature, I use XP/SP3, but don't see that on mine. I just have change/remove. My opinion is

I would not use that to update but would use the programs site to do so. Bob may have a comment on that also.

It seems you have everything covered as you say. I do have a question, how did you get the SWO 10.0.45.2 into the

add ons?

Thanks,

eidnolb

Hey Blue,

On the Add/Remove, when you click/highlight an item and it expands, there's an option that shows and states "click here for more details." It shows the version number, publisher, etc. and it has the link to the program's website, for info or updates. That was what I was referring to. You should have it.

Anyways, regarding your question about SWO. After I hit that glitch yesterday, I decided to start from scratch. So I went through all our previous notes and meticulously went through the steps and did the Java, Flash, and Shockwave all in a row. I felt very comfortable, having done it before, but this time I knew what I was doing per se. So I just went through it all and it worked as it should, and everything fell into place. Also, did you notice that the Java(TM) Plug-in 2SSV Helper disappeared? Guess something worked the second time around.

Also, I figured out why that Deployment Toolkit is there. You had asked if I had any other browsers, so I did a search on my C:\ drive, and it turns out that I do have browser components for Safari & Mozilla. This is because I have iTunes and use an iPod, so I guess Apple uses them and I downloaded those back when I first got my ipod. But that's all I use them for. I always use my IE8 when online.

In regards to the Shockwave, I searched for that and found it was auto save to: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Shockwave 11, and everything looks ok. The Shockwave 10 folder is still under the Macromed folder. Here's another screenshot of what's remaining:

image002.jpg

Hopefully, it's better than before. I kow you said you're not too familiar with it, so I gues this next question is for Bob. I previously tried to use the UNWISE, which worked, but I only noticed some files were deleted. I tried it a second time and nothing happened. My question is, should I just manually delete this entire folder? Let me know what you suggest. If it's fine as is, I'll just leave it, but I would like to get rid of it if I can.

Anyways, that's that. Let me know if you have any questions or need any other info. You guys have been a tremendous help to me! I'll be sure to contact you guys with any future inqueries. And, although you guys probably know much more than I do on these topics, feel free to contact me with any questions or topics that may interest you. After all, two heads are better than one Again, thank you so much, and hope to talk to you soon!

Hi, Ok, second time isn't as bad huh? I would leave that SP folder/files as is for now. I am so pressed from time, been on the phone here at home, getting ready for an appointment and trying to help another person. I want to take some time

go over what you have written, so have only responded to the most important for the moment.

Will post back later this evening.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Bob may check in before I do. He has been a good helper:-)

So I disabled the auto download etc from Java & disabled the Toolkit also. I have always seen that for "other browsers". You really have to keep tabs on these various programs:-)

You are right about me not knowing too much about Shockwave Player. As long as the other folder is not causing a problem I would just leave it.

Well, glad you have your system up to date and all is working as it should. I'm sure you understand now that it is a lot

easier to stay up to date:-)

Oh, and I got a chuckle at your "you guys"; one of us is a gal:-) I know what you meant tho & glad you appreciated our help.

Thanks,

eidnolb
