Lost Flash .msi/.msp

Guest

In an ill-considered attempt to regain some hard disk space, I think I deleted .msi and/or .msp files associated with Flash. I have downloaded, installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled the latest version from from the Get Flash Web page several times (including closing open programs and rebooting the computer). Flash sites (including the Flash Player settings page) do not work, and the Version Test page shows nothing.

I'm running Windows XP SP3, 32-bit, with Opera version 9.64 (I've also tried it in IE v. 8).

Is there a way I can get the necessary .msi/.msp files? Where should I look on my computer to see whether they're there?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Here is some further system info, if this is helpful. In Opera, going to Tools > Advanced > Plug-Ins brings up a list that shows C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32.dll as the plug-in for swf and spl applications. Checking the properties of C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32.dll, it shows as Shockwave Flash 10.1 r53, version no. 10.1.53.64, with a date of creation today, at the time I installed Flash.

Not sure why you need the MSI installer, but you can find them on this page http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/fp_distribution3.html

Thanks! I don't understand why it would be needed either, but I've seen statements elsewhere that some software requires the ongoing presence of .msi and/or .msp files. It's late here tonight, so I'll snag it tomorrow. Can you tell me what folder it ought to be deposited in?

You do not need the MSI to run Flash Player; you only need it once to install, then you can safely delete it.

In fact you do not necessarily need the MSI installer; most people use the EXE installer.

If you have a problem with Flash Player, then it is not caused by a missing installer.

I suggest that you do a clean uninstallation, then install it again from scratch.  Open this page http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html

  • download the uninstaller mentioned in section 1 (save to disk);
  • download the two executable installers from section 5 (save to disk);
  • close all browser windows, then run the downloaded uninstaller, followed by the installers.

What do you have now in C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash ?

Actually, the first question should be: does it work now?  Can you see the Flash animation at http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ ?

Thanks. The results are interesting. I did all this, most of it for about the fourth time. The one thing I hadn't done before was to install the ActiveX version. As a result, in Internet Explorer I do now see the flash animation and version number on the About page.

OTOH, in Opera, although the plug-ins list does show C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32.dll for swf and spl applications, the Flash About Web page does not show the animation or the version number. Likewise the Website Privacy Settings panel on the Flash player settings site does not show the settings panel, but shows the box saying, "This content requires Flash."

IOW, it seems to be working in IE but not in Opera. It did used to work just fine in Opera.

Contents of C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash:

Flash10h.ocx

FlashInstall.log

flashplayer.xpt

FlashUtil10h_ActiveX.dll

FlashUtil10h_ActiveX.exe

FlashUtil10h_Plugin.exe

NPSWF32.dll

The date/time stamps on these correspond to the installations this morning.

So, where does that leave me? Any suggestions for what's wrong in Opera?

Sorry I don't have / don't know Opera.  Is there some place (in Opera) where you can check if the plugin is enabled?

OK, this is now probably something to raise on the Opera support site. It may be that I need to get the latest version of Opera to see if it works with the latest version of Flash. Thanks for your help.

Don't know if this helps, but I provided some comments about my update process for Flash and Shockwave for Opera 10.53, in a discussion titled "Can't install latest Flash player 10.1 for Opera 10.53." It's located eleven (11) discussions before yours. The info might help you.

Thanks, I found that thread also by searching the forum, and have posted the current status of my sad story there.

Well, I'm happy to announce that my problem is solved, with a major DUH! for me. When I realized that PDFs also were not displaying in Opera, I checked Tools > Preferences > Advanced tab > Content. What should I discover but the "Enable plug-ins" box unchecked! I checked it, and now both PDFs and Flash display and run just fine. I have no idea how it ever got unchecked, but that's all it took to fix it. If anyone else is still having problems, it's worth taking a look.
