Mac OS X Flash Player Issues

New Here ,
Sep 09, 2011 Sep 09, 2011

Mac OS X 10.4.11
Firefox 3.6.22
Safari 3.0.4

Flash Player 10.3

Shockwave Player 11

I didn't have this problem a few days. Since  then firefox automatically updated itself, as it usually does. It also  suggested that I update my adobe flash player, and I knew I hadn't  updated it in a while, so I did. I downloaded and installed Adobe Flash  Player 10.3. But last night and today my internet was doing funny  things. For one thing, I couldn't play flash games like I had done the  day before, and my internet kept hanging up. (It seems to have stopped  hanging up for now).

With that version of flash I tried loading Pandora. The page came  up, I could see the pandora logo, but the page was more or less blank. I  couldn't see my stations or any images or the place to log-in. I tried  with Safari, and Safari told me that the shockwave player wouldn't load  properly.

I decided to uninstall Adobe Flash Player 10.3 and Install Shockwave  Palyer 11. (I restarted my computer after uninstalling AND after  installing programs). After installing the shockwave player, firefox  told me that it couldn't load because it was missing plugins. It told me  to download Flash payer 10.3, again. So I did. But Pandora still won't  load. And Safari continues to tell me that it can't load because the  shockwave player won't load properly.

I've cleared the history, enabled cookies, etc. I have no idea what  happened to cause such problems, but it is definitely very frustrating.  If you could help me figure this out,  that would fantastic!

Thank you so much for your time!

Please, I have tried everything I can think or have read about in dozens of FAQs. Please help make my flash player work so that I can continue with normal internet activities.

I'd recommend uninstalling Flash Player using the instructions on this page:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html

Once done, restart your Mac.  Verify that no Flash Player plugin exists in your /Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder.  Then reinstall Flash Player.  You shouldn't need to install Shockwave.

I uninstalled Flash Player. Next, I go to the "About Adobe Flash Player" to be sure it's been uninstalled - and it has been uninstalled. So I click on the grey "click here to download plugin" button.

A new window pops-up and says:

"Plugin Finder Service. Conclusion: No suitable plugins were found. Unknown Plugin (application/x-shockwave-flash)." And then there's a button that says " manual install. It takes me to the page to download Flash Player 10.3. Gonna try it, but I think that message is odd, a bad sign.

I'm sorry. I can't figure how to "verify that no Flash Player plugin exists in your /Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder."

Open Finder, go to Macintosh HD, then double click the Library folder, then Internet Plug-Ins.  You shouldn't see any reference to Flash Player or flashplayer in there.  If you do, delete them.

Just reread your initial post again.  Is your system PowerPC based?  If so, please uninstall again (sorry) and use the installer from this post:

What version of Flash Player should I use with my Power PC based Mac?

When I go to Firefox, Preferences, Manage Add-ons, flash player doesn't show up as an add on. I don't know if that makes a difference, or if that helps someone understand what's going on with my computer, but please help me someone. My computer was working just a few days ago and now it's not. It's very frustrating and I need to be able to get some work done that I can't with the flash player not working properly.

Today, in an effort to try to get things working, I decided to update java, safari, and I performed a security update for my computer (security update 2009-005). Flash player was uninstalled for all of this.  AFTER doing this, Pandora worked on both Safari and Firefox, but other  things such as flash games wouldn't work. It told me to download flash  player 10.3. Feeling encouraged by the fact that Pandora was working, I  downloaded the player yet AGAIN. However, once it was installed Pandora  wouldn't work. It said I was missing plug-ins. I uninstalled it again,  and Pandora still won't work. It still says it's missing plug-ins.

Then I began to search my computer for old flash versions, (even though after uninstalling 10.3 the "about" page says I don't have any version installed). After searching for "flash" in my finder, I found some flash player stuff from a couple of years ago. I deleted all of it. Then I reinstalled flash play 10.3 AGAIN. Nothing works, and what's more, now when I check the "about" page no images show up. It doesn't display box telling me which version is installed, and it doesn't display a box telling me that I need to download missing plugins.

SO frustrated! I just want my computer to work the way it did 5 days ago - I wish I had never updated flash player!!! If it ain't broke, don't update it!! 😕

I share Tanii's frustration; found this discussion a few days ago after the splash page on our Pilates class wouldn't open and then found that other sites relying on flash (a favorite restaurant, Youtube, the online newspaper) were telling me to update my flash player.  So I tried, after deleting previous version

OSX 10.4.11

Safari 4.0.4

Flash Player 10.3

The flash installation was "successful" according to the installer, but nothing - nothing! worked - all flash animations are black boxes & still can't access the Pilates studio or the restaurant, etc)  Have uninstalled (deleted plug-ins, etc) 3X, reinstalled 2X, waited around for "Chris" to help (after he asked if I could recommend a time for desktop sharing (twice) but flash 10.3 doesn't work here. Lots of time wasted, no improvement = VERY frustrating

I apologize for not being able to meet up for those two days, I'm not in support and while I do try and help people with desktop sharing sessions when I can, it can be difficult to schedule times.  As for the problem with Safari having plugins disabled, this isn't something Flash Player touches.  While I understand it's frustrating, it wouldn't have only effected Flash Player and might be something you could consider asking Apple about.

Either way, I'm glad you both resolved your problems and I'll do what I can to improve the visibility in our docs for the solutions that worked for you.

Chris

Tanii, did you check to see if "Enable Plug-ins" is checked (yes) in your Safari>Security preferences? If it isn't, do enable plug-ins

Oh yeah, haha. Everything was enabled, everything was succesfully installed. I did everything that everyone and every FAQ I could find, told me to. Eventually Chris just emailed me the old version of Flash, (10.1 something), and EVERYTHING works again. Sigh. Thank God!!!
