Please STOP bundling McAfee with your Flash Player Update

Many of us I.T. types for one reason or another have choosen

NOT to use McAfee in place of other (IMO better) products.  The McAfee scan product that you have bundled in

with your flash player updates install and leave files that interfere with the automatic updates for

Kaspersky.  After the Flash Product installes, I am then stuck visiting that machine in person running a special McAfee uninstall utility to remove McAfee even though it does NOT show up in the add/remove programs area of the control panel.  The flash updates do allow you to choose if you want McAfee installed, but unfortionatly, the default is to have that option checked.  For most unsuspecting corporate users, they don't see, care, or understand the impact of leaving that check box checked.  Please stop including that as part of the install.  For us corporate types trying to keep hundreds of computers working smoothly, we certainly don't need the automated headaches that McAfee brings with.

I share the exasperation in all of these posts and much of my problem is redundant so:

1.  Has there been ANY response or resolution from Adobe on this issue since most recent posts  in this thread (April?)

Beyond the bad judgement of the sneak bundling I am concerned from what I read because:

2.  McAffee apparently can't be removed with add/remove programs and so MAY interfere with Norton?  Audacious because the hours I have spent just trying to get a clean install of Flash using Firefox have left me with partial installs (including today where Download manager - launched from IE after removing old Flash player- is hung up at 100% installing application.  Note to Adobe: 100% means 100% not 99.  Ain't over 'till it's over.

3.  We are told by Adobe our virus protection software may interfere so I turned off Norton only to have Adobe sneak in McAfee.

4.  Does Flash really have to be updated what seems like weekly?  Can I avoid the issue by just turning off whatever (download manager) keeps prompting me?

Unfortunately, the bloody updates are necessary for security purposes if your browser is flash-capable and you visit any websites that have flash, although using flash blocking should keep the malicious junk from running while you can click on anything desirable.

The updater can be trashed, but it is reborn with every f**king update. I don't bother to jump for every update, but do a manual update when I feel like it.

There are third-party apps made just for removing insidious crud like McAfee.

I recommend NitroPDF . . . .

Addressed to anyone who will listen at Adobe.

I am a specialist software User Experience designer. In software industry terms, we're supposed to care about user experience.

Adobe needs to fire the person who set up Flash to automatically install software that was neither requested, nor desired, and in fact causes clashes and system problems.

To the people who so glibly point out "just uncheck the box for McAfee" - you did not have the experience of so many people who did not install by navigating the Adobe site, but rather followed a link from a site that uses Flash to update the add-in. This process does not offer the user any choice whatsoever, and I had to manually uninstall McAfee after installing the Flash player update. You might think it is a minor step, but it is not, when it conflicts with other applications and renders my machine unstable.

It is just a horrible user experience which ends with me having to try and communicate with Adobe and wasting inordinate amounts of time because of a single, bad decision on your part.

I dream of the day that I can get rid of Flash completely and rely on HTML5, maybe Silverlight, Java, or some other technology just so that I can avoid being abused without care by product managers and/or marketing people at Adobe.

If there is any Adobe person reading these fora, you really should escalate this to management.

I am a power user of a number of Adobe products (Photoshop, Fireworks, Acrobat, Illustrator) and I dream of the day that I would have the power to "teach" a company a lesson by moving away from their products. I am getting very close in terms of Photoshop, Fireworks, and Illustrator - alternatives are arising in the market and it is only a matter of time before I am no longer trapped into supporting a company who doesn't give a damn about me.

No thanks, Adobe, from everyone who has posted in this thread.

Bundling other software in the installer is a sign of a DYING company. Now I have to do more work and uninstall this stuff. Yeah, you got me. "Angry" is not strong enough. -Foffu.

It is nearly a year since this post and Adobe is still - yes, still - stuffing McAfee into the Flash updates on occasion.

Don't they hear or don't they care?

It is not appropriate.

More people need to let them know and keep telling them.

The first post on this subject was 2 YEARS AGO! I have to add my voice to it, because I nearly downloaded McAfee just now when updating my Flash Player. The default option should not be 'yes'. The option should not even be there. It's an unprofessional and sneaky practice. For once please listen and stop it!

Lets be clear: McAfee installation is NOT optional: Installation is enabled by default. What IS optional is to take the specific action and opt OUT of the installation.

I think the three questions that are properly relevant are:

Why is unrelated and unnecessary software being distributed with Flash player in the first place?

Why is its installation enabled by default?

Why is the software so awful that it has to be distributed in this way, rather than it being simply offered as a truly optional opt-IN addtion or, even better, simply offered separately on its OWN merit

Chris. I'm happy to repeat myself here, as that only answers the first of those quesitons, which is that Adobe foists this rubbish on its users because gets a kickback for every instance of the parasiteware that is installed.

You also make the obvious oint that one can take specific action to avoid the malware.

What your reply does not say is:

Why is its installation enabled by default?

Why is the software so awful that it has to be distributed in this way, rather than it being simply offered as a truly optional opt-IN addtion or, even better, simply offered separately on its OWN merit

Why is its installation enabled by default?

Because Adobe clearly don't care about their customers so long as they make a few quick bucks to satisfy their shareholders. A decision that is only going to cost them in the long term.

Why is the software so awful that it has to be distributed in this way, rather than it being simply offered as a truly optional opt-IN addtion or, even better, simply offered separately on its OWN merit

Because it's a perfect partner for the Flash Player since Adobe got their hands on it. I long for the days when we only had 1 or 2 versions of the Player instead of these seemingly continuous updates to the bloatware, and security risk, it's become.

And I've now solved the problem by removing ALL Adobe software from every machine I'm responsible for. Flash, Acrobat, Photoshop...your demise will not be missed.

It's even worse than simply being crapware. McAfee started an automatic update, then essentially locked up my computer. Multiple instances (3-10) of the updater began appearing and disappearing in Task Manager, and it was impossible to "End Process" on any of them. The only way I was able to get out was to reboot, which caused the loss of some data in the program I had been working in. But the worst is that the program managed to set all my drive partitions to not be monitored for System Restore, deleted all of my restore points, and deleted 90% of the program listings in the Start | Programs list--all the programs that had been installed with Windows Installer. Because the restore points are all gone, I can't even go back and restore to a time before McAfee initiated the update process.

This is absolutely unacceptable, and will tend to lead me to denigrate Adobe whenever and wherever I can--through your association with McAfee, you've caused me an otherwise unnecessary 40-60 hours of work to reinstall all those programs. Where can I send my invoice?

I'm freakingly sick and tired of these nonesense bundles.

When I go to the grocery and buy some vegetables they don't try to sell me a bike. They try to interest me in some special vegetables but they don't try to put in my bag a "free" bike when I look the other way.

Looking forward to see Adobe Flash die for good, for these and many other reasons.

Obviously, Adobe doesn't care about truly satisfying the customer.  What makes this bundling crap so sinister is that Adobe Flash is often required by certain browsers to watch videos (e.g., on facebook), and when the unsuspecting user is already interrupted by the "Flash Player upgrade required," Adobe sneaks in this McAfee that the majority of us don't seem to want.

I totally agree! I am disgusted by the fact that such a so-called reputable company would even THINK of bundling software with such a main-stream piece of software. Greed here has apparently overcome business ethics and I will certainly look for alternatives to Adobe software for everything that myself, and my clients, need.

I am absolutely SICK that a company I use to trust, and use to recommend to my clients would allow their greed to intrude on their business ethics.

As Adobe continues to practice this vial strategy, I will recommend to my clients alternatives to their software needs.

Wow! I can't believe Adobe, of ALL companies, stooped this low. Shame on you Adobe!!!

The public is moaning about this particular bundling problem for years now without result.

Today the same happened to me. A video refused playing, I needed the new Flash update. I downloaded the installer file flashplayer19_ga_install.exe and it never asked if I wanted McAfee, but showed two install bars. I panicked and interrupted the process. Of course I don't want McAfee, if only because its founder John David McAfee is known as a drug abusing psychopath. Strange thing is Intel (Intel Security) took over the business.
CES 2014: Intel's security rebranding sheds Mcafee name - Telegraph

I have two solutions for this problem, first the workaround:

On this page you uncheck the dreadful McAfee option and download the file flashplayer19_a_install.exe (without McAfee bundled in it).
Adobe Flash Player Install for all versions

But how do we make this nuisance stop forever? You do that by emailing people high up the hierarchy directly. You can't imagine how forthcoming a certain software company in Tel Aviv became when I sent a personal email to their financial officer (CFO) about the trouble I had to rid my girlfriend's system of their Ask.com toolbar, bundled with Java that came.
Enough emails like that and someone with authority will make this stop, simply by saying the word (the word is "STOP", indeed).

All,

I know people are frustrated with this so for those who are interested, I developed an app that will remove this from your machine provided you are an admin on it and on windows 7,8,or 10 and 64 bit only.

For those lucky enough to install this I am providing a 100% silent uninstall of this application as well as removal of some additional folders left behind.

The uninstall is SILENT, You WILL NOT see any prompts and should take 15 - 30 seconds depending on machine. There will be NO notification when complete and the app will simple exit if it does not find the install folders. The only way to tell is by the black icon in the system tray to indicate it is running

I kept this simple as can be simple double click and run: https://sourceforge.net/projects/adobeflashupdater/files/McAfee%20Security%20Scan%20Remover/

Best Regards To All

p.s I am also considering starting a new thread for this

I read another discussion where Adobe claimed that the McAfee download was option. That is not the case. I just had to abort the download of Flash because without having any option to avoid it, the installer displayed a screen indicating progress on the download of both Flash and McAfee.  I am on a Telstra NextG mobile network here (because no other options exist), and I simply cannot afford to pay for downloading a bulky program like McAfee that I definitely DO NOT want. I've paid for and used it before, and don't want it anywhere near my machine. It's worse for the computer than the malware it purports to protect you from. Is there any way I can download Adobe Flash without McAfee... PLEASE. Either there is a way or I simply don't use Flash.

Hi,

There is a check-box to deselect the optional McAfee offer when downloading Flash Player from Adobe's site, get.adobe.com/flashplayer:

Capture.JPG

If you did not see the offer and have an ad-blocker installed it's most likely the reason.  If you downloaded the installer from some other site, whomever is hosting it is serving the installer with the McAfee installer.  If this is the case, please post the link to the site where the installer was downloaded from.

Alternatively, the full installer is posted at the bottom of the Installation problems | Flash Player | Windows 7 and earlier page in the 'Still having problems' section.
