After I download and install the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 I encounter this problem.

What is that conflicting application and how to close it?
Thank you!

What is your operating system?
If it is Windows, check with the Task Manager if Firefox is still running in the background.

I have a similar problem, except that the conflicting application is Windows Explorer.
I am running Windows xp sp2 32 bit, and when I open Task Manager I do not have Windows Explorer open.
Any more suggestions, please?

It is Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe) that must be closed, not Windows Explorer.

@ʇɐb ɹəuəllıʍ I'm using Windows Vista 32bit. Anyway, I'm not encountering that problem anymore. I already installed the latest version of Adobe Flash Player but it seems it's not working because I'm still encountering the same problem on my website
"Content on this page require a newer version of Adobe Flash Player."
and now everytime I exit my Yahoo Messenger I always get this problem
"This program requires a missing Windows component"
So Microsoft will check for the solution online and this is what they want me to do
"Download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player"
but I already downloaded and installed the latest version of Adobe Flash Player.
Thank you so much for all your help.

You may also need to install the latest Flash Player ActiveX for Internet Explorer; download it from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html#main_ManualInstaller

You need to check the Processes tab in the Task Manager. You will also need to check for any messenger applications.

Does this mean that wherever in Processes the header iexplorer.exe appeares I have to end it? (it appears 4 times) and what about explorer.exe which appears once?
Also what do you mean when you write " You will also need to check for any messenger applications"?

Yes, you have to end all instances of iexplore.exe, and no - don't touch explorer.exe
If you have any messenger applications running (messenger.exe, msnmsgr.exe, msmsgs.exe), they also must be ended.

I did as you suggested.
When I got the Install Adobe Flash Player screen saying "Installer will automaticallycontinue when .......closed", I closed all iexplorer processes and after closing the last one this screen changed to say"Installation complete" and "DONE".
But the flash player had not been installed!
There are two things that may have a bearing on this problem. When I first started trying to download the player I was requested to allow "pop-ups" by Mcafee. This requirement now has disappeared. Secondly when I go to control panel to check if Flash player has been installed I see that Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX is listed as a programme but with no size.
Dont know if this is of any use

Can you see the Flash animation at http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ ?

Yes, I was able to dowmload it.
Maybe I jumped the gun but when I explored the site I came across an invitation to Download Flash player which I accepted.
I got the same result as previously.
However I have just re-read your last message, did you mean I should have been able to see an "Animation" as well as normal text? I will go again and see if I can find an animation.

No animations worked, although everything else on the site appeared to be visible

Check the add-ons in the Tools menu if Shockwave Flash object is enabled.

Shock Wave flash was not enabled, but is now, and iPlayer is now working.
Thank you so much for your advice, but the question in my mind now is How would I have found out what was causing the problem had I not found this forum, and why was this programme not enabled in the first place? After all I have been able to watch animations in the past.
Best regards

I now find that a programme called
ADOBEA~1.EXE
is running and taking up almost 100% of my CPU
time. I think this is a virus and is stopping McAfee
running a virus scan.
Is this a coincidence? and is there a fix?

Do you have Adobe Reader installed? What version?
"ADOBEA~1.EXE" may be AdobeARM.exe, which is checking for Reader updates. But this shouldn't use much CPU over long time. If it continues, I'd suggest to remove it from the startup list.

Adobe Reader Version 9.0
When I had the problem Iswitched McAfee on to a virus check but after about an hour it was obvious that I would have to wait all day and possibly all night for the check to complete, so I rebooted my computer and the problem went away. I ran a virus check anyway but nothing untoward was reported.
I am very thankful of your efforts on my behalf, but shouldn't Adobe be made aware of this problem
