V10.2 & Internet Explorer v9 Issue

I installed Internet Explorer 9 and then received notice that Flash was outdated. I upgraded Flash to current version. Pandora, now, doesn't work. Their website suggests that the problem may be with Flash. I went to the Global Storage Settings panel at Adobe and found that page to have the same problem as Pandora. The Panel itself does not appear (there is simply white space where it should be) and there are no icons on the left of the page.

What can I do to get this back to "normal"? (Is there a way to reinstall the earlier version of Flash perhaps?)

Check your IE9 Advanced Internet Settings. You can turn off Hardwaer Acceleration somewhere in there. (Use Software Rendering or somthing like that, I dont have an english system, sorry).

That fixed all my Flash Problems in IE9

Oh! And that sounded so promising. I enabled the "Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering"  option per instructions found here. No joy. I closed all instances of IE and restarted IE... no joy. I rebooted and started IE... no joy.

I should have mentioned earlier that I have three machines with this same issue -- 2) Windows 7 and 1) Windows Vista. (The above attempted fix was on the Vista Machine.) I, also, have a machine running Windows XP with IE8 that plays Pandora with no problem and my Blackberry Storm2 handles Pandora in the normal manner. So this issue is definitely with IE9 or Flash... or both.

Hi, So the Win7 and the Vista is causing an issue.

Go to this test site and please use each browser for this. Let me know if you can see the Flash Player logo animate(spin) and what version of Flash Player is Displayed.

Then at the same test site: Right click on the Flash logo, Settings,
then UNcheck the hardware acceleration in Display Settings.

http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/.

We've always turned off the hardware acceleration that way. I don't use IE9, but doubt if a browser would have that since it's an Adobe Technology:-) With the latest Flash Player update 10.2, it is also recommended to update the video card driver if needed.

Let me know on the above,

Thanks,

(I have elected to experiment only on the Vista machine.) The Flash Player Logo Spins. The Version is 10.2.152.32. I unchecked the Acceleration Option. Device Manger reports that the most current driver is installed (nVidia GeForce 8800 GT). I wonder, however, if a Driver could be at fault in all three machines.

Still no joy. The Flash Player still does not function on the (Adobe) Control Panel page nor at Pandora.

Hi, thanks for checking with the Vista machine. The Shockwave Flash Object is working correctly then if you were able to see the logo animate. The latest version of FP detected also.

Have you any problem with Youtube videos? There is an issue with the latest FP update and Youtube and they are working on a solution after taking feedback from Users. It's due to the new Technology in this latest update, Stage Video. The hardware acceleration and the video card drivers are causing some of these issues.

Flash Player is listed in the Control Panel/Programs & Features, but the Flash files are located in C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash  Open Flash and you can post back all files listed.

That Shockwave Flash Object for IE browsers is the ActiveX Control and websites look for that since Flash Player is a browser plugin,  not a standalone. It works thru the browsers, no matter which browser.

Just some background on how FP works.....

That nVidia driver may be a common fault. In the next post to you, I'm going to include some information that the Adobe Flash Player Team have and requesting documentation on.

The one thing is that they prefer to check with the manufacturer of the drivers.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Youtube videos work as expected.

"Flash Player is listed in the Control Panel/Programs & Features, but the Flash files are located in C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash Open Flash and you can post back all files listed."

I don't know what that means. I go to that address and find  four files -- Flash10n.ocx, FlashInstall.log, FlashUtil10n_ActiveX,dll, and FlashUtil10n_ActiveX.exe. I opened the log file as a 133-page Word document that didn't appear (to me) very helpful. The .exe file is an uninstall program. What is it you are asking me to do?

(I will respond to your last post separately.)

Hi, thanks for the files info. The Flash files are all correct. You don't need to do anything. Checking the Installed Flash Player files is just to confirm that they are correct. Sometimes an Uninstall may not be done correctly and an older file will be left behind. Just checking that that didn't happen.

No, I don't need any log file. If the Flash files are correct, especially.

I am, in addition to all the other irritations, still waiting on an answer to my question about (re)installing an earlier version of Flash.

Hi again, I've reviewed their requests and it appears at this time it's for the FP/Youtube issues. However this link takes you to the driver info.

As for fixing this, I'd recommend two things.  The first step to try is to update your video card driver (ATI, NVIDIA, Intel.)  This has helped a number of users and we'd be very interested to know how it works for you.

eidnolb's note: The other thing mentioned was turning off the hardware acceleration which you've already done.

IE9 has a couple of features that may be having an effect however. You may want to check those. One is the ActiveX Filtering.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie-9/features

Since you were able to see the logo with the Vista, can you still not access the Global Settings?

You may need to use a couple of these Panel Settings also.

http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager07.html

http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager04.html

Now you may also want to have Pandora confirm to you that they are supporting Flash Player 10.2.152.32 on their end. And if they are not, then ask them what is the latest version that they do support. Some websites may not have updated yet. So that would be helpful to know.

Thanks,

(Things turned very ugly. I cannot post a Reply on the Vista machine -- says I cannot post a blank message. Anyway, here is what I tried to post>)

Okay, I reinstalled the nVidia driver (from their website - v266.58). No joy.

Developed a new issue -- now cannot login to Pandora on this computer; I can on the other computers.

Anyway, I turned off the Active-X filtering and again no joy. Turned it back on with no change.

http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/se ttings_manager07.html

http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/se ttings_manager04.html

The first URL does not allow me to see (or use) the Flash box -- there is a blank white space as earlier observed.

The second URL shows me a graphic (where the Flash Box should appear) that tells me I need to have "Flash to play." And a button to download and install.

I have not contacted Pandora but it does seem to work properly with Flash v10 on the Windows XP machine.

Wait!

Now I cannot play YouTube videos... says I need to install Flash.

I uninstalled Flash rebooted. Install Flash but still cannot use YouTube and both Control Panels say I have to install Flash... I used the button there but no change.

Hi, The Flash Player Forum has had some Technical issues itself this past week but seem to have cleared up.

When you can see the logo, but can't access the Global Settings Panels, then something else may be an issue. Especially when you are getting that message that you need Flash Player. The Panels are not recognizing it for some reason.

It appears it's the Vista machine that has an issue. Since you tried to Uninstall/Install perhaps a step was overlooked. Try this method below.

First, if you have had any Virus, let me know. Don't run the Uninstall/Install if that's the case.

Download and SAVE to your Desktop the Uninstaller:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
Download and SAVE to your Desktop the Installer for IE- use the EXE Installer
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/fp_distribution3.html

Close all browser windows, you only want to be looking at your Desktop.
Disable any messenger services, as yahoo, msn, etc in the system tray(area near the clock)

Disable your Anti-Virus for now.

Be sure to use the Administrator Account.

Run the Uninstaller and when finished, Reboot(restart) your computer.
Check to make sure the Anti-Virus is still Disabled
Run the Installer for IE,  and when finished, Reboot.

Then go to this test site and test each browser:

http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

You may want to print these instructions to make it easier to follow. If you have any questions, let me know.

Re-Enable your Anti-Virus when finished.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Well, I can't imagine what could have happened since you were only checking the IE9 ActiveX Filtering and turning it off and back on.

Then taking a look at the Global Settings Panels and checking your Flash files.

Glad you were able to get back to where you were also.

"Well, I can't imagine what could have happened since you were only checking the IE9 ActiveX Filtering and turning it off and back on."

Well, that... and "updating" the nVidia Driver. I suspect that was the real culprit. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

"The Flash Player Forum has had some Technical issues itself this past week but seem to have cleared up."

Well, not so I can tell.

Here is step-by-step what I did this morning (on the Vista machine):

1. Rebooted to get a clean machine.

2. Set "Restore Point."

3. Used "msconfig.exe" to shut off all non-Microsoft Services and all Start-up Programs (This included any anti-virus programs, I believe... at least I could find no hint of any running.). Rebooted.

4. Ran the Uninstaller as Administrator. (I have used this program for several years; whenever a Flash update is called for.) Rebooted.

5. Ran the Install program as Administrator. Rebooted.

6. Went to "About" page, saw the spinning Flash Logo, and was informed "You have Version 10.2.152.32 installed."

7. Went to Pandora.com. Operation failed as before. (I, also, was unable to Login.)

8. Went to the (Flash) "Settings Manager" page. Operation failed as before. This time I did notice that when, for example, "Global Privacy Settings Panel" opens it has the "You must install Flash message" for an instant before reloading slightly to the left with the previously noted blank, white space. In retrospect, this (very quick) jump to the left is also what happens at Pandora.

9. Rebooted with msconfig.exe set to "Normal Boot."

10. See Step 8.

11. Restored machine to Restore Point set earlier.

12. See Step 8.

Okay, then. Step 8 is exactly how it is on three different computers... one of which is on a separate, isolated Network. I am having great difficulty believing it is a problem attributable to a Vista machine "issue."  And don't forget, that I have no problem with the same Flash version on the Windows XP machine running IE8.

This took almost two hours this morning and most of yesterday. I have exhausted my desire to fix this. Are you sure I can't simply reinstall an earlier version of Flash (meaning, where can I get such a version?)

Hi, Yes, I agree it is exhausting. I can give you the Archived version site. I don't know what version you had prior to the latest, but if it was working, then you may want to use that. However, after reading the below referenced threads you may see why this sometimes occurs and would most likely happen the next time FP is Uninstalled/Installed.

The following has helped other users:

If the advice from @sergioazenha is correct, then clearing the same directories on a Windows machine should also work.  Not sure why deleting the files written to the AssetCache would help this, but is also harmless (you'll get fresh versions of the files).  Worth a try though!

The Windows equivalent for these directories:
Vista\Win7:

1 - C:\users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Flash Player\AssetCache

2 - C:\users\[username]AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player

XP:

1 - C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Adobe\Flash Player\AssetCache

2 - C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player

This is from this thread: The above is Post 18 and the Post #16  http://forums.adobe.com/message/2454582#2454582

This comes from this thread Post # 8   http://forums.adobe.com/thread/591622?tstart=0

On this thread, I would not go beyond Post # 1

Keep in mind, some of these threads are responding to a certain Edition of Windows, so be sure to use the one that is appropriate for you.

A lot of research has went into finding this info. And even tho the threads may be older, they still work for those having this issue. It appears this "glitch" can happen when an Uninstall/Install is done in updating Flash Player.

The above is all that I have on this issue.

Thanks,

eidnolb

Good news. Well, first, let me say that deleting the Folders did nothing... except I could then log into my account at Pandora.

I, then, went to Pandora's FAQ page -  http://blog.pandora.com/mt/mt-search.cgi (and Search on Flash) -- and followed these steps:

What do I do if Pandora doesn't load, and the homepage is blank?

  • 6. Next, please adjust each web browser's settings as follows:
    • In Internet Explorer, select Tools->Internet Options:

      • On the second tab, Security, click on Trusted Sites in the upper scroll window, and then click the "Sites" button below it. Un-check "Require server verification https..." at the bottom, then enter "*.pandora.com," then click the Add button, then click the Close button.

      • On the third tab, Privacy, move the slider to Medium.

      • On the fifth tab, Connections, click the LAN Settings button. Click the checkbox for "Automatically detect settings" if it isn't already and uncheck the checkbox for "Use a proxy server for your LAN" if it is selected. Click OK.

      • On the last tab, Advanced, click the "Restore advanced settings" button. Click OK at the bottom of the Internet Options box.

  • After that, everything worked as expected... well, on the Vista machine that is. In my excitement, I am posting this before getting to the Windows 7 machines.

Hi, I saw your message after it came in, but the Adobe Forums have been down for several hours. They now are working "now & then" I couldn't login to any Forum, including the Flash Player Forum.

So it appears that several Settings needed adjusting. These may be peculiar for Pandora. That was helpful that they furnish that information.

Computers, including hardware and software are not simple anymore. Websites sometimes have their own requirements.

I would have thot tho, that you would have had the Settings that way anyway, but who knows?

At least Vista is taken care of!!

Thanks for the update and feedback. Hope it goes well for the Win7. Speaking of which, did you Install the Service Pack 1 that came out recently? Are you familiar with the ActiveX Filering feature included?  You may want to check that out as it has upset a few users.

    Thanks,

Your post prompted me to run the fix through one of the Windows 7 machine. Much joy.

Yeah, I was one of the 4 million who installed the first day of release of SP1. I have not had opportunity (nor desire) to look at the Active-X filtering. There is such a feature in IE9 that I tried a couple times in conjunction with solving the subject issue. I didn't find that it did anything at all so quit.

Hi, There is more and more to try to keep up with. I don't have the Win7/SP1 link handy, but the IE9 I do and that ActiveX Filtering is explained there.

A point about those using Win7 or IE9(final vs released 3/14). One of the features is called ActiveX Filtering. Win7 updated with a Service Pack 1. This Filter is included and now is with IE9 also.

    Link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie-9/features

I know that can be adjusted and there are Settings that can be made. Whether it is on by default when the SP1 or IE9 is Installed, that I don't know. Still using "Old Faithful" (XP/SP3) here:-) No IE9 for me. Don't know if that's or yet!

Well, I think you have both PC's working now. Great.

You might like to mark your thread as answered. I think your thread has a lot of good info in it. I try to save these kind of threads for future reference for others. Especially the Pandora fixes you found and posted. We've had several people that use that and it seems there is always an issue. So thanks for that.

    Regards,

    eidnolb

P.S. You'll be receiving a prompt from Adobe since Flash Player Update along with Reader/Acrobat/Air yesterday. Mostly all Security related from what I read late last night.

Yes, I agree. The solution has been found.

One final bit of data, however. Jed, a "Listener Advocate" at Pandora, suggests this if everything else fails:

Select Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced: uncheck the ā€œDo not save encrypted files to diskā€

Yes, I made my responses overly detailed because that is the way I would like this type of communication to be. Too often, I find my problem outlined but the solution doesn't make sense  (or, worse, is handled with Private Mail).

I should mention that, I suspect this issue is going to be more common as time passes. Apparently, there are not that many Pandora users that have made the subject upgrades... yet. In any event, I found a few other instances that were affected -- one was a source of Legal Documents that issues them in PDF form. They became unavailable (not so on the Windows XP machine) until I made the Internet Options changes. Not to mention the inability to access the Flash Control Panel -- which everyone should check out simply to confirm or deny having this issue.

Anyway, problem solved. All's right with the World.

Hello, Thanks for marking your thread answered. I'm glad you posted the details, since that is so much more helpful. So I appreciate that and the feedback. Much more important for those of us that help on the Flash Player Forum, since we may not use the programs that cause problems for others.

Solutions aren't helpful I have found until the issue is identified and since each person's system is configured differently, that must be taken into consideration. I think you've found that true, with the additional information you've provided in your latest message.

Thanks for the back and forth and especially the information that's been compiled.
