I updated good working Flash 10.1.85.3 to version 10.1.102.64 via the download center.
After this Flash is no longer working. Adobe recognizes10.1.102.64 version and the Flash on the Adobe website is working, but every other website has a problem.
For example simple movies at http://www.flixxy.com/ are no longer shown, instead installation of Adobe Flash is requested. Which is senseless because Flash is already installed but of course I did try.
I have done everything mentioned in the Flash Player troubleshoot section. I uninstalled with the uninstaller and reinstalled from the download center, I uninstalled with the FlashUtil10*_ActiveX.exe and reinstalled from the download center. I tried the above but with a manual installation, I rebooted in between or went back to an earlier configuration with system restore. All to no avail. So what shall I do? Version 10.1.85.3 does not give any problem and is working fine everywhere, but is unsafe. Version 10.1.102.64 seems not to install properly and is giving problems on all websites apart from Adobe.
Is there maybe something wrong with this update? Help most welcome!

Can you see videos at Youtube.com ?
I went to the website you mentioned, and I see that they do nothing but show Youtube videos. Do you have 3rd-party content enabled at http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager03.html

Thank you for your reply.
I meanwhile reverted to 10.1.85.3, because I need to be able to see flash content for my work.
With version 10.1.102.64 strangely enough I could see YouTube movies, but other movies, like the ones on Flixxie only showed an empty spot with a swf icon and I got an alert to install Adobe Flash player. This happened on a lot of other sites, http://www.antoinevandinter.nl/weblog/ for example, same blank spot with an icon, but there no prompt to install Flash. And yes, I have third party flash content enabled in the settings.

I am going to reply to myself, just in case it might help others.
A lot of helpful remarks on this topic are made on the social answers forum of Microsoft where issues on Adobe Flash on the Windows/IE platform are discussed.
It appears this is a long standing issue.
However, when you are Windows user, you might find an answer there.
I found a working (and very simple!!) solution at
where Don Varnau (MVP) writes at Sunday, December 06, 2009 3:42 PM
1. From Internet Options> Security> Internet Zone, click on the Default Level button.
2. You still have the Flash uninstaller and installer files saved on the desktop, right?
3. Restart in Safe Mode. Right click the Flash uninstaller and run as administrator.
Start Vista or Windows 7 in Safe Mode

or

4. Restart into Safe Mode again.
5. Run the Flash installer as administrator.
6. Restart.
7. From IE> Tools> Manage add-ons, make sure that the Shockwave Flash Object is enabled.
8. Test Flash Player at http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html
9. If unsuccessful, check steps 3 and 4 at http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html
This worked for me.

If you have a 64 bits version of Windows there is another suggestion to get that working
