Adobe Flash Installer (version 23.0.0.185) hangs at 90% on my iMac

Mac OS 10.11.6, iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)

Safari Version 10.0 (11602.1.50.0.10)

Flash version: just uninstalled it, so I no longer have a version

I have tried both the online and offline versions of the installer, to no avail. It always hangs at 90%. One of the first steps that I tried was performing a totally "clean" install (removing all remnants of the players and plugin anywhere on my computer). So, that means that I no longer have any version of Flash available to me at all!

I'll need to get the install log files from you to troubleshoot.  Please review the FAQ Where do I find the Flash Player installation log on the Macintosh?  and configure your system to obtain all 4 log files (Adobe_ADM.log, Adobe_GDE.log, install.log, and FlashPlayerInstallManager.log) for the same installation attempt (you'll need to run the installer again to ensure this).  After obtaining the log files upload them to How to share a document and post the link to the uploaded files in your reply.

Thank you.

I don't know if you have investigated other questions on this problem elsewhere in this forum, but if not here is the solution that I followed and it works!    Reload you OS!

9. Re: Flash install stops at 90%

I solved my flash installation problem by reinstalling El Capitan. This is  installing over one's existing macOS, NOT a clean install:

BACK UP, underlined 100 times

Then, AFTER BACKING UP,

Command-R while restarting

Select Reinstall Mac OS X (or words to that effect)

This also fixed some other odd behaviors: an error message about a CoreTelephony Trace File  problem, and an error message about a lockfile problem. Also, I was able to update Office 2011, which had failed before.

Try it! (after backing up)

A possible, less-invasive alternative to reinstalling the OS may be to scan and repair for any problems with the filesystem or disk permissions.  Again, the advice to back up your data before doing any kind of disk maintenance is well worth following.

See the "Try Disk Utility" section:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176

While you're there, choose Repair Filesystem Permissions (Verify will frequently return clean, but then Repair will still fix a bunch of problems).

your link to Apple support to repair filesystem is no longer update...Haven't you any better/easier/quicker solution than re-install El Capitan in order to solve this unloading Flash issue ??? I do not understand why your new update is not working now, whereas it has been working for the earlier updates.

Thanks for your help

Here's another take to solve... An interesting solution reported by mariep30469451 and be faster than a reload of the OS.

Only question I have is whether its a permanent solution or a one time solution?  IF you have to do this every time you load any software, its then just a work-around and not a solution.  Let the community know what happens please.

Bonjour,

"it was a problem related to the system of internal protection of Mac! Under my OS X El Capitan 10.11, just only temporarily disable this option. This via the Terminal (found by doing a search under spotlight) then in the terminal window, typing "csrutil disable", this disables the internal security. Then, by restarting, you can reinstall. And then reactivate the security in the same utility with: "csrutil enable"."

Disabling SIP (System Integrity Protection) is a temporary solution.  mariep30469451  states that she disabled SIP, installed the software, and then re-enabled SIP.  SIP really shouldn't have to be disabled to install software.  And as you've discovered, re-installing the OS, which fixes any file system issues solved the problem.  Further pointing to an OS issue, not a software issue.

This isn't a Flash Player issue.  This is a problem with your computer's file system.  What caused it the mystery.    If you see comment #3 above user richardday108  states that re-installing the OS "also fixed some other odd behaviors: an error message about a CoreTelephony Trace File  problem, and an error message about a lockfile problem. Also, I was able to update Office 2011, which had failed before."  The same error is also reported on the following discussion forums, for other sofware:

The only commonality is that it all started around the same time.

Thanks but all of the answers are not helpful ! It is quite incredible I should buy a 80$ software to backup my El Capitan and then do all these long and complex process only to get your Adobe Flash Player ! Don’ t you think your new update Flash Player is the real issue, for the other ones never had any problem to be installed on El Capitan ? Please, check properly and give us a new correct update !

Many thanks

you have an interesting perspective.  Time Machine is a program you have free on your Macintosh computer, all you need is an external HD, almost any size, and the will to do some kind of backup to protect your favorite files if not everything.  Time Machine is the most painless way to protect yourself.  While the risk of doing the reinstallation and losing your files is very small, its just a good practice to have backed up.  The only other alternative you have to fix your OS (Adobe software in this situation is not at fault) is to upgrade to Sierra, which is free from the App store, a backup of your files is still recommended.  Remember:  you, myself, and others encountered a situation unknown to us around the third week in October that altered our OS.  Whatever it was, a reload of the OS and then the Adobe installer working proves that the the installer is not faulty.

Thanks for your answer. Yesterday I finally got new Adobe Flash Player update after backing up my files and throw them away! It seems I needed to find place enough on my system in order to down load Adobe…!!! All my fault…! But no single message appeared to tell me the computer was fed up !

So can we say that new Adobe update works with El Capitan for I have not reinstalled it. Or maybe some files of mine that I throw away could have been the issue ? Just tell me !

HI fafate

If there is nothing wrong with the system, Flash Player will install.  If it fails, due to error previously mentioned, there's a problem with the file system preventing the installation.  The only solution thus far has been to re-install the OS to fix the file system.

Thanks but you do not answer my last questions. I did not re-install the OS but only threw away some of my files and then Flash Player did install.

Looked back through your posts,  your first post assumed the error you were getting was the same as everyone else on this post (of course that assumption is easy to make on my part due to you posting on this topic).  You never did provide install log files to confirm if the failure was due to the same error or not.  It's quite possible the reason installation was failing for you was for a different reason and not the same as the others.

Don’ t you think your new update Flash Player is the real issue

No, not when other software was also not installing with the same exact error and after re-installing the OS, or upgrading the OS, the software installs with no change to the software installer.

You're installation is failing for the same reason charlesp63868842  Flash Player installation failed.  I posed a detailed description of the error at Flash install stops at 90% comment #3.  Essentially the problem is with your system, not Flash Player.   You can try the solution charlesp63868842  posts to re-install the OS which fixes any file system issues on the system, or contact Apple for assistance.
