I've got a message which tels me that support from Adobe flashplayer will stop in 2021. It gives a link to "uninstall"! I dont like messages with "Links to ..."! Hence my question whether this is correct.

No problem!  Better safe than sorry.

For Mac:

For copies of Flash Player distributed by Adobe, you can run our uninstaller:

https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html

For copies of Flash Player distributed by Google (as a built in component of Chrome), a future Chrome update will drop support for browser plug-ins and remove Flash Player.  As long as you have automatic updates enabled in Chrome, you don't need to do anything.

For Windows:

Part of the Flashplayer uninstall instructions says "go to C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash and remove all files in this folder."  WHen I try I get :  You need permission to preform this action . and .You require permission from Trustedinstaller to make changes to this file.  None of the files are removed???   Have run the uninstaller and followed the instructions a few times (and restarted the PC as instructed)   What next??

@Jo5FF2,

  • If you're not the owner of your (school or business) computer, contact your IT dept for assistance.
  • If you are the computer owner, reboot in Safe Mode with a computer user profile that has full administrative level permissions.
  • And consult your browser's documentation about removing add-ons.

Microsoft embeds Flash Player in IE/Edge and the files associated with the embedded version of Flash Player cannot be deleted.  The standalone uninstaller does not remove these files (as indicated in the tech note).

Microsoft will eventually issue a required update that removes the embedded version of Flash Player.  In the interim, they have released an optional update that removes the embedded version of Flash Player.  See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4577586/update-for-removal-of-adobe-flash-player for more information.

@Rik5FF2,

Yes, it's true. Flash Player is ending soon.  The official announcement was released 3 years ago on Adobe.com to give content creators plenty of time to prepare for this.

https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/end-of-life.html

You may uninstall your Flash Player now if you wish.  Chances are you'll never miss it.

For copies of Flash Player distributed directly by Adobe, you can run our uninstaller:

Uninstall Flash Player - Windows:
https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html

For copies of Flash Player distributed by Microsoft (the built-in copy on Windows 8 and higher for IE and Edge), you can

install this optional Windows Update.

Microsoft Update for Removal of Flash Player

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4577586/update-for-removal-of-adobe-flash-player

At some point in the future, Microsoft will make that update mandatory.  If you do nothing and have Windows Updates enabled, Microsoft will automatically remove Flash Player from your system at the point that they mark that update as mandatory.

For copies of Flash Player distributed by Google (as a built-in component of Chrome), a future update of Chrome will remove Flash Player support and the bundled copies of Flash Player.

There is no replacement program for Flash Player.  Content creators need to migrate their content to some other technology as was announced over 3 years ago when Adobe, and browser vendors, announced Flash Player's end of life, which includes browser vendors removing support for Flash Player from their browsers.

For reference:

Browser support information:

  • Apple Safari - Flash Player support removed in Safari 14, released Sept 16, 2020
  • Google Chrome - Flash Player support removed in Chrome 88, released Jan 19, 2021
  • Firefox - Flash Player support removed in Firefox 85, released on Jan 26, 2021.
    • Firefox ESR 78 will support Flash Player for the time being, assuming the Flash Player NPAPI plugin is already installed on the system as it’s no longer available for download.
  • Microsoft Edge - Flash Player support removed in Edge 88, released Jan 15, 2021

Hi @Nicky5E96,

Nothing replaces Flash Player.  Sorry.  Old flash-based games & websites are obsolete now.

Ask the developers for alternative versions that don't require Flash Player.  Everyone had 3-1/2 years notice that Flash Player was ending on Dec 31st, more than ample time to create new versions.  Or find new HTML5 games online. https://html5games.com/
