Can't enable Flashplayer within Google Chrome

New Here ,
Feb 26, 2017 Feb 26, 2017

when attempting to sample a song on Amazon, I got an error message saying Flash player was blocked on the page. I couldn't get in from there to manage Flash Player, so I went to about:plugins and to the Flash Player box and checked the Always Allowed to Run box. I rebooted but it still didn't work. According to online instructions, there should be an enable and disable buttons in that box, but none are visible, either within Flash Player or the other plugins listed beside it. So I'm stuck as to what to do. As I understand, Flash Player is resident within Google Chrome and is supposed to automatically update. My current version showing in the box is 24.0.0.221. My only other option appears to be to download Flash Player outside of Google Chrome.

What version of Chrome do you have?

The 'always allowed to run' checkbox is listed with the Flash Player entry:

My version of Chrome is 56.0.2924.87. I'd already checked the Always Allow box. What's puzzling me is when I read the FAQ info about this, it shows enable and disable buttons, but I don't see these when I go into about:plugins

Can you read through this post, Chrome/win7/ run the plugin choise stopped existing, and see if you're issue is similar to what's being reported there?

Thank you.

It's the same issue, but I continue to have the same results. I long ago checked the allow to run box and nothing has changed.

I am having a similar issue to the one in this thread. When I check the box with "Always allowed to run" everything works fine. However restarting google chrome removes the check from the box. Then the prompts to allow flash player to run return.

The box stays checked for me. It's the enable and disable links that aren't there that I suspect is the problem.

Google has removed the enable/disable link from chrome://plugins as they change how Flash Player functions in the browser.  We will be updating the tech note soon.

Please try the following:

  1. Launch Chrome and navigate to chrome://settings/content
  2. Scroll down to the Flash section
  3. Select the Allow sites to run Flash radio button
  4. Click the Done button

Does setting this option fix the issue?

Alternatively, you can manage Flash Player on a per domain basis:

  1. At step 3 above click the Manage exceptions... button
  2. In the Flash exceptions window enter the hostname pattern for the domain you wish to view Flash content in
  3. Click the Done button
  4. Click the Done button again

Does Flash content display?

You may need to refresh Chrome after setting each of these options.

Essentially, As Jeromie states at Chrome/win7/ run the plugin choise stopped existing, Google is modifying their algorithm for displaying Flash content by default.  If you continue to experience issues you can try a few options:

  • delete the embedded version of the plugin (go to chrome://plugins > Details to obtain location (should be in the Users directory) and force Chrome to update Flash Player again
  • Install Flash Player from get.adobe.com/flashplayer - it's the same plugin as the embedded one, but sometimes it works whereas the embedded one doesn't
  • uninstall and re-install Chrome

If none of these options work, I recommend contacting Google, as ultimately, it's their browser that's not displaying the content.

The first option with settings did the trick. But now Flashplayer is permanent for all sites. Is that going to be a problem?

You may see more Flash content than you did before.

Another option to try, instead of setting Allow sites to run Flash in chrome://settings/content, is to do the following:

  • When visiting a site that has Flash content, but it's not displaying, click on the lock icon in the address field to the left of the site URL (sometime the lock icon may be replaced with an i inside of a circle
  • Scroll down to Flash and select the Flash setting there
    • This is a per-site setting and the selection will only work on that specific site.
