Problem Description

  1. Was running flash for chrome and able to open SWF files.
  2. Received a notification of a Flash Player update
  3. Found today that when I opened a SWF file I got the Save As dialog rather than the file displayed in Chrome
  4. Updated Flash Player to ... (I realise now that this was not a logical solution).
  5. Then found the Flash was blocked on Chrome due to Signal Messenger Chrome Extension ... removed that Block
in the following Chrome dialog ...

... then removed Signal Messenger Extension from Chrome.
  6. Restarted OS, restarted Chrome, but problem remains.

Please can anyone assist in this regard.

Thank you for the detailed report.  This is an issue with Chrome.  see 767342 - UI no longer exists to run .swf URLs - chromium - Monorail

Lots more issues reported on the Chrome forums: Google Groups

  1. Was running flash for chrome and able to open SWF files.

The Flash Player version in this screenshot is the ActiveX Control for IE.  This is not the Flash Player for Chrome.

The one in your screenshot in step 4, Flash Player PPAPI, is the version for Chrome.

This is a common theme as browsers tighten controls on Flash Player.  Firefox blocks the loading of bare SWFs from the local filesystem as well.  The path of least resistance is to run a local webserver.
