Will FLV still be a usable file type without flash, such as playing a FLV off of VLC player, or will FLV just disappear? I'm asking because I usually record in FLV.

You can check by uninstalling Flash Player.  I'm not sure about VLC specifically, but a lot of video players (Real Player, etc) leverage the copy of Flash Player on the system to play Flash content (including Flash Video).

You'd probably be wise to use a newer video format, there are better choices in terms of compression and quality that are going to be in popular use for much longer than FLV.
