i installed a remanufactured motherboard and power supply after a voltage surge. i installed windows xp pro, norton 360 ver 4, registry mechanic, adobe reader, and adobe flash player. everything works fine but the flash player crashes internet explorer and firefox. i've uninstalled and reinstalled several times with no luck. i've even reinstalled windows twice. the flash player keeps crashing. i tried numerous other things like turning off html 1.1, turning off hardware accelerator, etc, but no luck. all the drivers are the latest and xp is current on updates. here's a belarc profile of the system: it says sp2 but i've updated that to sp 3

Hi, I was getting ready to sign off but just a couple of questions. The list of Critical & Important Windows Updates, were these Installed?
Are you using McAfee and Norton?
If you Uninstalled McAfee, did you Uninstall only from Add/Remove or did you in addition use the McAfee Removal Tool?
Use both browsers and test here:
You should be able to see the Flash logo animation and what version of Flash Player is displayed(for each browser)
Is IE still vs 6 and is FF(Firefox) vs 3.6?

good morning, thanks for the reply last night.
here is the current belarc report. there is an update that says reinstall but when i tried, it said i wasn't using the program it applied to. apparently it is for ie6. so now i think everything is up to date. i'm only using norton. the mcafee was installed one time when i reinstalled flash player. it came with the player and i didn't uncheck the box. i uninstalled it using add/remove in the control panel and the mcaffee uninstall program came up. i tried both browsers on the flash page and the version on both was 10.1.102.64. something else weird is that sometimes the videos on you tube work but never on portals like you tube or bing or msn.

i can't get the current belarc profile to cut and paste but
all the windows updates are now current and mcaffee is removed.

ok here's more mystery. i just uninstalled and reinstalled flash player using the adobe uninstaller and rebooting after each step. aqlso installed latest java. i started looking at videos and here are the ones that worked: you tube
imdb
hulu
ebaumsworld
here are the ones that didn't work: yahoo
msn
reuters
here are the ones that partially worked: the blaze (works on videos that originate from you tube, but not from news stories)
bing (work on videos from their video section - entertainment type, but not from news videos)
the common thing here seems to be that news type videos crash and entertainment type don't. also videos seem more likely to crash on internet portals like yahoo

Hi, Ok, just to recap. We have XP/SP3, IE8 & FF 3.6-- & Norton. Test site for both browsers passed and FP is vs 10.1.102.64.
That tells me that Flash Player is working correctly. The website/video issues is another thing.
First, because McAfee was Installed and even tho you removed it from Add/Remove, files are still there. They can conflict with any new Anti-Virus program that is then Installed.
You need to do this:
McAfee Removal Tool and Instructions
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507&lc=1033&pf=1
Follow Steps 1 & 2 only, Close all browsers before Running the Tool. Allow it to completely finish.
When you receive the CleanUp Successful, then be sure to Reboot(restart) your computer.
Let me know when you have that done.
Thanks,
eidnolb

thanks for getting back. i did you one better. i
reinstalled windows again and did all the updates. when i installed java and the flash player i did them seperately and turned off norton firewall and antivirus for each installation. i'm still having the same problems. you tube works fine, you tube videos on the blaze work fine but not regular news videos on the blaze. yahoo videos don't work at all. the videos that do work are perfect. pretty crazy stuff!

Hi, ok. Keeping in mind that Flash Player works thru the browser, then anything additional Installed in the browsers are either a + or a -.
You might try to disable any Norton addons in the browsers. Toolbars can also conflict, so I would disable them. It would be best to do the first and test a site that is giving trouble. Then leaving the Norton addons disabled, then disable any Toolbars.
The reason being is that addons can conflict with each other.
Do you use adblock or any popup blocking Software?
Using IE, go to Tools, Manage addons and look under "Show" in all addons. What version is there for Shockwave Flash Object and is it Enabled?
Using FF, look in plugins for Shockwave Flash, make sure it is Enabled.
Using IE, go to Tools, Internet Options and make sure the Security for the Internet Zone is set to Medium.
Finally, go to Add/Remove and do you have any Java listing other than version 23?
Those are just a few things to do & check to begin with.
Let me know.
Thanks,
eidnolb

Hi, I just noticed you are using a Router. Now since it has a hard Firewall and you have the Norton Firewall, that may be the issue. I would disconnect the Router and disable the Norton Firewall and see if that makes a difference. If so perhaps you could try just using the Windows Firewall with the Router. You would have to enable the Windows Firewall, since Norton has already disabled it.
The addons that Norton install in the browser are known to conflict, and they are not needed for the Anti-Virus component to work. I don't know how fond of Norton you are but that AV & McAfee are the most invasive and trouble causing AV's that I have ever tried to work with.
Let me know how it goes doing the above,
Thanks,
eidnolb

hi, i reinstalled windows again and added a 1 gb video card. i did not install norton this time. i got the free anti virus at pc tools.am using windows firewall. same thing happens in ie and firefox. however sometimes a video will play all the way through only to crash when i try it again. other times if i keep trying after a crash the video will play after several attempts. you tube always plays though. thought the video card would play since the motherboard and power supply went out in an electrical storm. thought that the only thing left would be the video card. oh yeah, i got a 1tb hard drive when i put this all back together with the new motherboard. this is interesting but i'll be glad when it gets resolve as the computer really hums otherwise. the new video card speeded things up nicely. thanks for the help you're giving me. i appreciate it. gordon

Hi, I don't think Windows is the problem. In my opinion something is causing the browsers to crash, not show the videos, etc.
Did you Uninstall Norton prior to Installing the AV from PCTools? If so, in addition to Uninstalling from Add/Remove, you need to use the Norton Removal Tool. Otherwise you have Norton files still in your system that will still conflict.
Disable PCTools before running this also.
http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN
(Select which program you have and download it from this list to your Desktop)
Close all browser windows when running this, and when finished, Reboot.
The new video card I'm sure is helpful.
Cinematronics - 3D Pinball Version 5.1.2600.2180 What is this? A Game? Any Screensavers that are not Windows?
Toolbars & Addons in the browsers can cause what you are experiencing. It's a matter of elimination to see which are conflicting.
Your Specs are fine so it's not that. Something in the browsers:-) I repeat myself, LOL

hi, very cold here, hope your weather's not too bad. i installed pctools av after a clean install of xp. so i'm guessing there wasn't any norton left after the installation formatted the drive. the pinball game is something that comes on windows. i've had it in win98, win me and xp. only have windows screensavers.
the only toolbar i have is yahoo toolbar and the problem still happens when i disable it or uninstall it. i also have a dell dimension 4100 with pretty much the same things on it and the current version of flash player works fine on all sites. the videos from you tube, imdb, and you tube videos on the blaze work perfectly. the message that comes up when a crash occurs says the webpage has caused ie to crash.
thanks again. you have the patience of a saint!

Hi, Yes it's cold here too, maybe down to 7deg F or lower tonight. Had some snow and ice, but not too bad.
So the message is that the "website" has caused IE to crash. What exactly does the message say? That info would be helpful.
Also give me a link to a couple of websites.
Now on the Yahoo Toolbar, I remember Windows issuing a Hotfix for it. Can't remember the year but remember that because many users were having issues with it.
Check your browser addons:-)
Thanks,
eidnolb
